Sony Officially Announces Slim PS3

In my opinion, too little, too late. Especially considering the lacking game support for the PS3...

Several weeks ago, we featured a story that the slim version of the Sony PS3 had been confirmed and in that story, we said to expect it in September on the Tokyo Game Show.

However, on Gamescom in Cologne, Germany - Sony decided to announce the launch on September 1st, and try to avoid further losses on the hardware side of business. According to the information that was released today, we can expect to see the Slim PS3 in the coming weeks.

This PS3 will indeed be thinner as well as narrower in size. Not only will this new PS3 be smaller, but it will also have a larger 120GB 2.5" HDD inside, larger than the current 80GB as PS3's maximum offering. In addition to all that, all of the cost-cutting moves enabled a significant price reduction - PS3 Slim will be $100 cheaper, e.g. PlayStation 3 is finally getting into the $299 bracket.

People were talking the XBox 360 slim, XBox 540 as well as others. I'm thinking along the lines of 540 myself. Supposedly they are going to make an announcement towards the end of the year to beginning of next. Of course this has been the talk since last year.

I really hope Mc$soft can produce something a little better than the crap they have been. Emulated HD dvd is one of the many xbox360 lies. Imho, Sony's console hardware will always beat the pants off Microsoft and Nintendo.

The Ps3 slim is a step towards the PS4, and Xbox can't afford to make theirs smaller b/c of heat issues. Xbox is working on the "720" as their next system according to what I've been hearing.

Maybe Microshaft will learn from their mistakes in the 360, but making it that cheap means huge profit margins for them, so I'm sure they will not mind another 1/4 fail ratio on anything they make. >20% fail rate is unacceptable.

dude, I havent even bought a 360 or PS3 i have ps2 and regular Xbox, i dunno i love my pc for gaming

I bought the XBox 360 Elite when it came out just to sell it a month later with only maybe 6 hours play on it. Wouldn't mind having a PS3 just for games that aren't released on PC.

Indeed. To be honest, I've been playing the living hell out of COD mw & waw on my ps3. There's a lot less hacking/cheating going on with consoles. I like the pc versions better, but I get so tired of aimbots, wall hacks and trainers.

I do better w/ a mouse and k/b than a controller, but consoles make everything else way to easy. No server logins, no mod banning because you did better than them.... bliss. If only I could overclock my ps3.... since it's pretty much the only decent piece of hardware I have left :(
