Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme Gets Revised (http://www.overclockaholics.com/102932/Thermalright_Ultra_120_Extreme_Gets_Revised.html)
Thermalright's iconic Ultra 120 Extreme (TRUE) CPU cooler has a new revision. TRUE Rev. B brings along a small design change that the company claims improves its cooling performance a little. Most of its 52 aluminum fins barring the top one have a 'V'-shaped cutting in the center. This perhaps increases turbulence (for better heat dissipation) a little. The resulting temperature drops are estimated around 1~2 °C. TRUE Rev. B has started selling in China for RMB 530 (which is around $79), including fan. Without the fan, $72.95 is all it takes.

Yeah I have one as well as the last revision and was working on a homebrew review for us. Give me a day or two and i will post it.

Is this one easier to install/uninstall then the thor's hammer?

I dunno how easy the thor is but this new revision only takes two screws to hold it down and was a breeze to install unlike the last version taking four and being a little tough. It is pretty solid feeling too unlike the old version you would install it and it could still twist around. I'll try my hardest to get the review up tonight after the gym.

I'm really liking this newer TRUE and recommend it to anybody. I dunno yet if it cools better than previous versions as I have yet to do a comparison but they had me at the revised mounting as that was my biggest complaint with the last version.

Personally I'm not to found of the Thor's.

the true with some high cfm deltas, or possibly ultra kaze's could be a very efficient cooling solution... Hell its alot easier o tune with and install than water

I have two Ultra Kaze 3,000 RPM's on mine with a fan controller. When I need a lil extra I turn it up but pretty much I run them at half 24/7 with a 4.3ghz overclock on my i7 with temps of 42-47.

Hah hah you have not seen a poorly designed mounting mechanism until you have seen my home made bolt through kit on my tuniq :)

Nice to see improvements being made on an old classic, I don't know if it is worth an extra $30 though.

Yup TRUE is Amazing, with a PUSH PULL setup I was able to push my i7 920 to 4859 Mhz with HT off.......

Well I couldn't post my results last night as my internet was down at my house. So I brought my pics to work just to realize I forgot my screenshots at home. So hopefully when I get home tonight Cox will have fixed whatever they screwed up and I will have internet.

Sorry about the delay. Here is what I came up with:

Test Platform:

Core i7 920 D0 (Mine is a leaky chip that runs at low volts but at high temps)
EVGA Classified 759
Mushkin Ascent DDR3 2000
PC & Power 1200W
Windows 7 64
Thermalright Extreme 120 Rev B (lapped)
Thermalright Extreme 120 Rev C
Ambient Temps 23.2 degrees Celsius

As usual, Thermalright's boxing job is top notch. No changes here on the newest revision.

Here is what was in the box:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/th_IMG_4683.jpg (http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/IMG_4683.jpg)http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/th_IMG_4697.jpg
(http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/IMG_4697.jpg)http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/th_IMG_4700.jpg (http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/IMG_4700.jpg)http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/th_IMG_4701.jpg
(http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/IMG_4701.jpg)http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/th_IMG_4702.jpg (http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/IMG_4702.jpg)http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/th_IMG_4703.jpg (http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/IMG_4703.jpg)

Here is what the new mounting looks like. I only snapped pics of it on a 775 platform. 1366 looks the same.

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/th_IMG_4688.jpg (http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/IMG_4688.jpg)http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/th_IMG_4689.jpg (http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/IMG_4689.jpg)

I had a few more pics but dunno what happened to them. Pretty much you have the two metal pieces that hook to the backplate by 4 screws. Then you have the metal piece that goes thru the heatsink and is held down by two screws instead of the four screws of the previous versions.

Now time for testing. I'm not going to go into hours and hours of testing. Just some quick ones.

First off we have my Rev B Lapped at idle.

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/th_RevBIdle.png (http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/RevBIdle.png)

Now stressed.

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/th_RevBStressed.png (http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/RevBStressed.png)

Now the Rev C idle.

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/th_RevCIdle.png (http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj55/travisjcottrell/RevCIdle.png)

Uh oh. As you can see I am a good 5 degrees hotter at idle with the Rev C than the Rev B lapped. That is where my Rev B was before I lapped it. So pretty much this tells me the cooling is about the same so I won't go into anymore testing as it is clear as can be. I pretty much figured this would be the case as the surface on the Rev C is the same as before. Curved like no other. Thermalright states they do this on purpose but too many times people have lapped theirs and gotten better results. I am walking proof as stated before my Rev B was 5 degrees hotter until I lapped it. Just for giggles I hooked my Rev B lapped back up but with the new mounting from the Rev C and I was back to regular temps. So the new mounting has no significance over the old except ease of installing.

So if you are looking to update your old TRUE thinking you will get better results, don't. The only thing you will get is easier mounting.

I could of done a lil better but time is short for me lately to tweak on computers. As long as I got the point a cross is all that matters. Thanks.
