status update:

1st Stage: R-507
2nd Stage: R-13 (I cant believe I found this gas)

I am having a hard time finding R-1150 anywhere! no refrigeration supply house has it available even for order... I have contacted AirGas and hope they can find some R-1150

I will post a picture of the setup in a minute

Might want to ask over on XS about R13, just about every 2 stager I have seen built there uses R1150 for the second stage.

Airgas should have it, tho you might have to order it.

I am not sure of Sdumpers builds and just what his can hold temp wise and the fact I have not used a Gulftown yet so I do not know what heat loads they put out but asking for -100c fully loaded on a 2 stager might be a bit much to ask from what I read.

On a fully loaded I7 mine will sit about -106c on idle, but drop down to ~-85c on full wPrime loads.

In order for 2 stagers to work really well they need the strongest 1st stange you can make, thats the key for handling loads, at least as far as I know.

Like I said SDumper has been making 2 stagers right and left these days, based on my unit and his tweaks and he gets a bit better load handling than my 3 year old unit.

Hell no! Im in the process of cutting a larger Tray :)

Should be a nice build! Gulftown is going to create massive loads (as im sure you already know) pushing well past 300watts. -100 loaded would be very nice, but maybe a little too cold for just a 2 stager to accomplish

I have much larger condensing units :) and a few more of the one you see in the picture, im trying to build a smaller unit but if i cant reach my goal of -100c I will throw size out the window and bring the bad boys in :)

Hello everyone,

I have just brazed in the hand expansion valve, and plate heat exchangers :) I replaced the liquid line filter dryer and added 1 suction line accumulator (small) and one liquid line accumulator (small)
I pulled a vacuum down to 50microns and held for 2 hours to ensure no leaks in the system.
The 1st stage has been pressure tested the system to 500PSIG for 1hr
I have charged some R-507 Refrigerant gas into the system and will let it sit at a static 150LBS over the night (or weekend) to further test the 1st stage for any leaks.

Once the 1st stage is fully operational I will start work on the second stage.

* pics are with my new camera, look any better?

today the fisrt stage became operational and is performing beautifully!

After making minor adjustments to the hand expansion valve and replacing some copper line set after the metering device and adding a service port after the metering device the system is able to fully operate :)

*I had an issue where the copper tubing between the expansion valve and the plate heat exchangers became clogged by silver braze.

the 1st stage has been vacuum tested and pressure tested with no leaks and filally charged with R-507.

here are some updated picstures of the build progress:

Hello everyone!

I have an exciting new update :)

I have custom built a case for the cascade system, this bad boy is big enough to use as a bench table complete with casters :)

I have finished brazing in the 2nd stage of the cascade and am currently leak testing the system with a deep vacuum.

I will be charging the system with R-13 and am contemplating a second gas to complement.

Very nice !

You still have lots of room inside that case :)

Bet that thing will be heavy when done :)

I'm sorry but your ignoring basic properties and design here. Although you managed ice, you will never manage a large load.

You aren't using metering devices that are tunable. Just a hand valve on the first stage? Your going to sit there and operate it the entire time? If not the second stage becomes a bomb.

Not to mention your using the plate HX system wrong, and it will accumulate oil and possibly burst if that oil freezes, at best it'll just let the compressor die.

I agree with Adam.

Your basic design is fundamentally flawed :(

Basic Design was a proof of concept build, I spent 2 days on it but was prevented from ever continuing it due to the fact my business was burglarized and nearly everything I had collected over my lifetime was taken by a pair of crack heads...

Now that my life has been rebooted and some of the dents have been hammered out I will find some time to pick up on my side projects and have a little fun.
