I finally had some time and installed the 5970 Black...I had issues with the HIS5970 and sent it back to the egg today.
No issues with this card. No rebooting, grinding fan etc. etc. Then i noticed that there was no fan control at all..So I went on XFX site and downloaded the fan control bios and had to put it on a usb drive and flash it and WALA...Even though that is weird this is one sweet card...
I downloaded the overvolt tool which has 2 voltage settings.. I really know nothing about it yet so i set the card for what I had the HIS set at for 3D03.. I set the 2 voltage settings at half...1200 points more than the HIS.

I need to play with this some but I think they could be correct about 30% more...This was a freebie try and see card...I will never give it back...:)

I think I am going to sell the HIS when it comes since i paid for it and get another one of these.....
3D03 first run at 4.625 and low settings 817/1124 and half of each voltage setting.

I still have that error message in 06....Maybe i will reload the raid 0 and see if it goes away....

Did you try re-installing 06?
Very interested in the final comparison thoughts betweent he HIS and Black.

Yes I reinstalled 06 2 times...

I ran the same speed as the HIS... 4.625 and same ram speed.. same clocks 817/1124 I used the MSI with the HIS and the overvolt program with the Black..I only moved each setting half way up because i don't really understand it..it was actually about 1400 points higher...

I think the XFX could be correct about there 30% statement..In the hands of someone like you I am sure of it....I have only run 1 bench....I will try Vantage and 05 tom...

What about at a lowe cpu clock? still getting error?

nope, this sucker runs as sweet as the 5870's...

I am thinking about getting a tattoo:shock:

Don't get alot of extra's with the Black..Just get a code to get what you want from there site... You might see I had to Mod the inside drive bay just to get it in..I think the Black is about 1/2 inch shorter than the HIS. I know my lines look like chit water but it's not the fluid..It's just as blue as it ever was..It's the inside of the tygon lines and it isn't sludge..They are just stained for some reason....I actually replaced the lines once and they just turn...I am so embarrassed

What error are you getting in 3d06?

What error are you getting in 3d06?
I have to find it..I have it written down. I think it's in the HIS5970 thread...It is like a directx9 error that comes after the 2nd test..I read where futuremark doesn't have a fix for it yet..I loaded the directx9 from microsoft and it works but that really slows 3d06 down bigtime..The weird thing is it usually effects 05 also..That runs fine

Coolness. Do you have a screenie of the overvolt software from XFX?

Thanks, but it seems limited on the max volts you can apply :( Will Afterburner work with this card?

12-22-2009, 01:13 AM
Yeah it does kinda. Am I reading it correctly that it can only go to 1.1625 Engine Volts and 1.15 Memory Volts?

lakeside2189
12-22-2009, 05:59 AM
Yes, when you use afterburner does the mv volts work with both of these....I think you could use both of these at one time if AB only works one...

As you can tell i really don't understand it...

Soups would know if the HIS that works good for him has no error's...This card is error free so far....

I am fairly sure that AB just works core voltage. Don't think mem voltage is all that important on air as a slight mem over-overclock can screw up your whole run. Just keep the mem around 1250 if you can get it stable and push that core baby!;)

I had said i had reloaded the 3D06 program 2 times and I did but I remembered I hadn't since I put the XFX in and WALA!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a walk in the park so to speak...Basicly I can't catch up to soups but i did run this with the AB and the XFX program at 4.500...
I have to say the 5970 just as the 5870 has me looking twice..I really didn't thank they could beat the 4870x2 TOP by much because it was in a league of it's own....29300 with the top at 4.5.....

I will come back and add the run with the XFX which I still don't really understand...I think that is the fun of it.....:Dizzy:

The XFX volt program is still beyond me..as you can see I ran the AB at 834/1135 and the XFX volt at 820/1125...I know..I am a NOOB.....

Try using AB to only adjust voltages. Use CCC to adjust the clocks and fan speeds. Use the drop down GPU selector in CCC if need be for quad fire 5970 setups.

I'm sure you can squeeze out a 4.6+ run with that chip depending on temps.

I think so but you or some others might have to help me..4.500 to 4.525 is my max for 06 and Vantage.....Although it is getting colder here!!!

You upping voltages on IOH core and IOH/ICH I/O volts?

I bump EVERYthing up for 4.6+ on the 920 :)

I can run 4.650 with the graphics test like 03,05, aqua....

It's with the cpu test like vantage and 06 I have trouble getting up there.
The 975 has always seemed to require heavy voltage...As far as the IOH I run this at 1.34-1.38...with the ICH the P6T7 will only allow you to go to 1.40......The other one IOH PCI-E or it could be ICH PCI-E I leave on auto...

I think it's the ram..I just did a 4525 run in 3D06 but loosened the timings to 8-8-8-21 and had a good run....It could be I need to loosen them more for Vantage..Vantage is more CPU oriented than any of the Futuremark test...

This is my PB with a single 5970 and at 4.525... later I will try 4550 and loosen the timings to 9-9-9-24...This is at 1451 ram speed....

http://i420.photobucket.com/albums/pp289/lakeside2189/30726XFX5970.png

was the ram speed..I loosened timings to 9-9-9-24 and ran 4.550..Good run but only 45 points more... Couldn't do 4575..I am wondering if i should try a lower ram speed like 1101????I am also using the XFX volt tool mostly because of a article(many) that I read on I4 and a few other places about major problems with the 5870 and 5970..some of the articles point towards AB causing the gray screen lock-ups..This could and probably means nothing.....

Only bench the 5970 hadn't bettered over the TOP was 3D05 until now....
As far as comparing the two cards XFX or HIS I couldn't really do it since i had a problem HIS card but i think they are probably the same...

The XFX overvolt program only works better in 3d03 that I have seen..I also don't really understand it's low numbers...

The best part about this XFX is it is totally smooth..No error's....Runs smooth as silk but then again a good HIS is probably the same...

I have never had a gray screen freeze with this card...(knock on my head) but I had to use the AB program to get over 40,000 in 3D05...

I would like to see some of Soups dual 5970's once he gets his second card back....

You will get my results when the egg figures out if they can ship out another 5970 or be forced to refund the amount. dual 5970's looked strong for the brief time it ran.

More interesting is when I get the 4-way 5870's steaming.

Well I guess that means the one I sent back will be awile....Have they let you know anything??? Just wondering what to expect...They will have the one I sent back tom....

All they said so far is "We have recieved your product and bla bla checking for replacement product, bla bla, if we can't find a replacement you will be refunded, bla bla, if anything is missing from your product box you will be charged bla bal"

Yep, thats it for now.

In soups case and mine I don't think the Holiday season is the problem...I think the problem is they just can't get them...

I think they are getting slammed with rma due to the issue people having with fans and heat and waterblocks not fitting proper

They are issuing a refund due to lack of stock. Meanwhile I get hosed on shipping both ways, wtf?

I hope I get that option..I didn't pay for the shipping back....If you email the egg before you do the RMA ..Tell them the product is defective and can they send you a return postage ship label. They will do it..They just don't put that in the fine print.... Let them create the RMA...

same thing for a refund..If you email, they will send you the label and no restocking fee if defective....

Switching back to the XFX volt tweak gets me a higher score in Vantage...I think it might be because you can control both core and memory voltage...So far XFX's program is the only one i have seen that controls both...
I know 32 is better for Vantage but i don't have that set up...

Using the msi at 2.50 to 2.72 and using the XFX set at 1.16 core and 1.14 memory I beat the AB by 500 points....
New single card PB for me...
