When it comes to pre-overclocked graphics cards, Gigabyte isn’t usually the first manufacturer that jumps to mind but they have been working hard to bring some excitement to enthusiasts. ASUS has their TOP, Matrix and Ultimate series and MSI had their Lightning products but at the time it seemed like Gigabyte was the odd man out of a very lucrative market. They answered back in a big way with the Super Overclock Series.

Unfortunately, past attempts at releasing Super Overclock cards proved to be a bit difficult since the GTX 260 SOC (http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/23260-gigabyte-gtx-260-216sp-896mb-super-overclock-review.html)and GTX 275 SOC (http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/24823-gigabyte-gtx-275-1792mb-super-overclock-review.html)came out very late in the GT-200 series life cycle. Nonetheless, both of these cards blew us away with their performance and incredible overclocking potential. Gigabyte is now working hard on releasing Super Overclocked versions of the HD 5870 and HD 5850 1GB cards.

The HD 5870 SOC was first shown at CES but was not widely covered by the media. However, we now have some additional details for you about this soon to be highly anticipated card including some interesting component choices and a picture of the finalized design.

The card itself should retain a near-reference PCB size but that is where the similarities between standard, vanilla HD 5870 cards stops. Gigabyte has gone all out here with a massive dual slot cooler which incorporates a large-size aluminum fin / copper heatpipe construction along with a pair of fans to keep heat under control. Unfortunately, this design means most of the heat produced by the core will stay within the general vicinity of the card but with good case airflow, this shouldn’t cause an issue.

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/wp-content/uploads/SOC-3.jpg (http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/wp-content/uploads/SOC-3.jpg)According to Gigabyte, all of the GPU cores and GDDR5 memory destined for this card will be strictly sorted in accordance with their “GPU Gauntlet” process. This means only the highest overclocking units will be installed onto the SOC series of cards which should also allow for better power consumption and slightly lower heat at stock speeds.

Much like ASUS’ addition of a SuperML cap to their higher-clocking models, Gigabyte has decided to use NEC’s new Prodilizer capacitors to their design. These digital capacitors will supposedly help this card’s core speed push past the 1Ghz barrier by providing high current capacity and a quick switching frequency. It is also important to remember that the Prodilizer caps will be used to supplement Gigabyte’s Ultra Durable VGA design which incorporates two ounces of copper into the PCB along with other tweaks to improve efficiency and product life.

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/wp-content/uploads/SOC-5.jpg (http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/wp-content/uploads/SOC-5.jpg)To additionally help overclockers, there will be voltage read points incorporated directly onto the card’s PCB and Gigabyte will also be launching a revamped software tuning utility. While it may look like a confusing layout the new Ultra Durable VGA software allows for core, shader (on upcoming NVIDIA cards) and memory clocking, GPU and memory voltage tweaking, PWM adjustments and finally fan speed settings as well.

Unfortunately, the final clock speeds of this card are still up in the air but considering the specifications of some other overclocked HD 5870 cards being released in the next month, we expect SOC’s core to run in excess of 1Ghz with the memory running at ~5Gbps. To make matters even more interesting, it seems like this card in particular will be hitting store shelves shortly before the release of NVIDIA’s GTX 480 and GTX 470 cards. This could make for some interesting competition.

Pretty soon we will see some competition

Gigas 5870 SOC
MSI 5870 Lightning
Asus 5870 2gb Matrix

i wonder who will take the crown

This all has to do with the new mem chips they are using which are capable of some sick arse clocks and they are binning those new units for these "Heavy Hitters" :P

Any idea on what kind of price ?
even a ballpark figure would help

I reckon mid 500's and up.

That would be a good price point

what i would give to try out one of those..

Me personally have never had any luck with OC versions of any card.

I usally buy the vinilla and test my luck out ......

Card does look sick to be sure though

This could be fun, but once agian I won't spend money on these cards. rather wait for 6XXX series..

I thin we will see a refresh ala 5890 or something along those lines until 6 series cards hit the streets in the fourth quarter

But I do think the 480's will have to compete with the refresh product .... AMD may be waiting nV to lay it on us though

I like their OC utility, not only you can raise vgpu but also vmem! Price will be on MSI Lightning ballpark $500,,,

The question is WHEN can we buy them, Im sure a lot of burned lightning guys here will be all over this or the Matrix, whichever comes out first :D

I'm saving for one or the other.... hopefully I won't have the cash until both are out so I can get the better clocker.... :Dizzy:

I am liking the 2GB Matrix action personally ....

XFX is hitting the streets with a 4GB 5970 as well .... for you gamers out there it would be sick but practically worthless for bointage

I wouldn't count out the x2's just yet. If the 4g 5970's clock and pwn 3d, a pair could do some serious global damage....

There is a couple of super solid reasons you will not see an x2 version again.
First, the bridge that the 5970 employs is much more efficient that conventional crossfire like the x2's employ equaling more output. Secondly, the production price and cooling solution are much better with a single pcb. 1x5970 truly equals 2x5870, I tested this first hand. maybe I misunderstood your post?

Edit: back on topic for me too, lol. I plan to purchase a SOC just to run it against and with the lightning. Then keep the better of the two.

Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse.... I was referring to the 5970 as an x2 .....

I was about talking it having to compete on a 2x and 4x platform ....

if it were to compete on a 1x and 2x like before the bot changes .... well then it is a whole different ball of wax and you would have to have one to even be in the running for globals .....

For me 2x GPU cards are more of a gaming platform than a benching station ... althought would be great fun to play with. But you gamble if enough people will compete to even get decent hardware boints ....

Hey man no sponsors, I'm just selling my old stuff and upgrading.

In fact I'm boycotting all manufacturers info on the hwbot. I just leave in black or right no sponsors! :)

Andre told me they should be out April.
