I have an idea, but thought I'd throw this out and see if you guys (and gal) can save me some from the tedious task of trouble shooting a wc rig
My gamer.
Slower than fuckin molasses in winter. Started a few days ago when I flashed the BIOS. Flashed it again today and no improvement.
Symptoms:
slow, as per above
HDD light CONSTANTLY running effing wild
Hanging up intermittently
BSODing while gaming .. before it slowed down this much..
The ECP displays temps at stock speeds, ONLY FF when OC'd to 4.5g
Hardware:
i965 EE sitting on a wc EVGA 769 (760 /w hydro copper wc block)
Caviar Black 500g, 3x2g Gskill Perfect storm 2000mhz RAM, tri sli 285 evga HC cards
Suspicion:
HDD, BUT, that wouldn't explain the behavior of the ECP display
Second potential culprit on my list - THE CPU
May be the mobo?
Could be the OS needs a fresh install
I've had to stop 5 times now and wait for the system to come back while typing this, and I'm at default speeds.
I started the restore wizard before I started typeing this, and it's still not starting?
Your thoughts????
My friend, I have reason to believe your frag box has the AIDS.....
Can you run a Hijackthis?
IF not, run in safemode and look at your startup list and post what is in it verbatim...

I would start with a fresh install of OS and see what the outcome is.

AIDS??? OMG  Face, wtf is a hijackthis??
I went through the startup hours ago and didn't see anything out of place. I have a heavy duty virus suite so at least for the moment I'm not thinking that's it... actually this happened though last night when I switched off while playing UT3 with the supes ;) Since then it's been dead ass slow.
I'm shying away from a fresh install only because it's an OEM disk and I'd have to wipe all my gaming files off and reinstall - not ruled out though by any means.
Actually, I'm hoping it's the processor so I can RMA it
Restore finally started just after my first post, and it's still initialing as I type this.. doesn't look promising :Dizzy:
Maybe I'll swap the whole damned thing out tomorrow morning :D
sure as hell ain't happening tonight :morpheus:
on the lappy

Well, the restore seems to have done some help. Went all the way back to 5/5 but do think I need a fresh OS install soon. The ECP is displaying the CPU temps with the rig running at 4.4 ghz.
Not sumthin I can RMA the CPU over huh... bummer lol
Any thoughts, please, keep em coming :)
now for the real test... UT3 :D

I agree with DrNip, a fresh install. From there if you still have issues you know it is hardware.
Besides a fresh OS install never hurt anything IMO.
Sounds like an infection or possibly a bad driver/update.
Reinstall should fix you up nicely..... Cleaning/fixing from where you are now doesn't typically yield as crisp results...
....stay off the pr0n homie... :taunt:

 yeah, you were kickin my ass and I had to do something
Agree with all on the fresh OS need but at least the restore got the rig running at it's old pace again. Played some UT3 on the Dawgg server so I wouldn't be embarassed by the Superbro again should something go wrong :Dizzy:
Should be ready for the UT3 blowout this weekend, just let me know the schedule :D

Your hdd manufacturer should have a diagnostic utility that can pull smart info from your drive to see if it is the problem (Western Digitals is called life tools or something like that.. pretty sure seagate and Hitachi both have downloads as well. An app like everest should be able to test the HDD out too.
Not sure how the ECP connects to the motherboard (via NB I would assume?) So it could also be the northbridge taking a dump. High HDD usage, no ECP and BSOD when you stress the vid cards... commonality would point to the NB.
If you are running Vista or Mojave you can open up performance monitor and look at the HDD info and see what exactly is accessing the HDD so much.
Reinstall can be tested by just putting a new HDD and installing windows to that. If the problem persists... its hardware.

interesting perspective as the NB is running hotter than normal hmmm. Good idea on the hdd utility too
ECP connects through the pins you'd normally connect your front panel control to as well as several other pins (some control the pcie slots)

Might want to load up some anti-spyware utility such as spybot and give that a run, along with your av.
And this is hijack this http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html
it gives a list of everything thats running on your system to see if you have spyware/virus/ whatever.

Argh thats another beef I have with ASUS their AMD backplate broke on me!!! WTF.. Right after I threw out a AMD backplate that I used electricians dope on for insulation was too lazy to clean it so I chucked it!
ARGH
AMD backplates are normally the shizzle I use them for everything. Air bracket mods, water blocks DIce pots....

Never owned one :Dizzy:
I just know that when my wife "cleans" my office while I'm out of town, I can't find shit when I get home. All my computer parts are in nice little plastic bins... no effing methodology, just dump em in a basket and put nice and neat on the shelf.... jeeez
Good luck dude
