Is Windows 7 really worth playing with?

I like it. Of course I liked Vista when it came out as well.

Needs the bugs in the browser fixed but it is worth playing around with. Basically just like Vista with a little different look.

I have been using Win 7 now after it went live on MSDN/TechNet and so far I have not had one issue with it. All my other software is working just fine with no problems at all.

This has been a very smooth install and working rig so far.

Good to hear. I have it downloaded and have a key...I just need to get all my new stuff together and install it.

I was running RC for about a month. Not bad, still has issues with some things. Plus the new UI is way to clunky. I suppose I understand how people that went from XP To vista felt. I was running Longhorn since, 2003? so Vista is like XP to me :)

After dealing with Vista's asshole bootmanager for the last couple of years, I am in lust with Win7 and its almost hiccup free boots.

FYI, I did a quick install/run with WIN7 without installing the latest Nvidia drivers for the GTX285. Then I installed/reboot, ran with drivers and scored 2k points less with the drivers.

One thing I like about Windows 7 is less driver CD/DVD's I have to run. On other O/S's I have to install mobo drivers, wireless usb drivers, bluetooth drivers and what not. Windows 7 I don't have to.

Yeah that was a big plus to me also.
First time I installed Win 7 and went to install the chipset drivers and saw that the device manager had nothing to update I went... oh no whats going on here. Then after searching around I found all was good, installed GPU drives and away I went :)

I did have to use the Vista 64 drivers for the ARC-1231 controller card but they seem to be working just fine.

Now thats exactly what I was wondering about Buckeye :) Wether or not my areca card was gonna run on Win 7 :D

So far Windows 7 RC seems to work better than Vista SP2...How sad is that? I really hope that this os doesn't get screwed up for release.

LOL

Have you tried anything since RC?

RC is awesome. The private public release of the software is just great...

It is amazing how simply people are fooled by benchmarks...

(Look at me I can honestly say I am number 5 in the world on Spi1M for my CPU... well there is only 7 submisssions yet...
come on people get ta benching...)

Actually thats wierd...

Holy Crap. My point discrepancy made sense to me today.

Currently I have only 7.1 points active. (I am running a new release chip so it easy to place top 10... there is no competition... yet)

Yet says I have 8 on my Profile.... So if 1st place is what maybe? 1.5 points, than kingpin (sorry to lazy to type the solid colons up... ) must bee first place in all 999+ benchmarks? Can I get in on that action?

I do not get it. ACcording to the rules you must be one person owning hte HW and SW or some crazy crap like that...

I do not get where the money comes from.. the benchamrks? They get cheat sheets that the rest of us have to figure out? And read what others have posted about whatever mix of architecture?

I mean after all enthusiasts killed Vista.. (IMHO)

LOL

Yah tried some extreme cooling on my beers last night. Finished my benchmarks in record time, now the hangover kicks in...

On a serious note, was griping about the points a little. Not sure how one person can have 1500 points.

DrNip
06-23-2009, 06:56 AM
Somethin like you are allowed 300 hardware points and you can have as many global points as you can get. Global points fall of faster in my experiences as newer, better hardware comes out which means bigger, better scores. you can have more hardware points than just 300 but only 300 at a time count towards your overall points.

For those who don't know, the Windows 7 RC can still be downloaded as of this post but the cutoff date is set for August 20th.
If for some reason you still don't have it, you'd best get on the ball or you'll be SOL. The mail I received said you could still get keys for it after the cutoff date if needed. Best thing to do would be to get as many keys as you can while downloading the RC and be done with it.

Late Sat. night, July 18th, the MS partners voted and passed Build 7600.16385.RTM.
Over at 7forums, there was a lot of confusion as to whether or not MS would recompile the build and release it as 16386. Either way, it should be available for d/l, with keys, on July 24 for MSDN and Technet subscribers.

Note: Just checked again, and now they're saying Aug. 6th.

Loaded Win7 32 yesterday on my 8600/790i Ultra combo and now I get a blue screen with bad_pool_header error everytime I begin a bench. Tried a fresh install on another drive and get same results. Anyone know whats up with that? I have used it before many times and never had this issue.

Why I thought the Downloads ended like a month ago lol, I assumed the email I got was that Keys would no longer be available. Guess I should have read it.

Now I just gotta find some newer builds.

Will let you guys know how it turns out (will probably install tomorrow night)

im running enterprise, and its fawking great!

you dont have to reboot after you instal nvgpu drivers :D

games pretty nicely too. i did notice a slight hit in things like hdtach, im sure its just a driver thing. since enterprise doesnt include solitaire, and things like that, i loaded up vm and xp and played solitaire on that. it was pretty neat! tho its kinda weird they dont give it too much ram, unless you tell it too. i hate page files tho. windows update even worked on xp thru vm lol :)

i like it!

Well running RTM now, gotta admit, much more put together than RC.

Still has the same old Bullshit explorer that people bitched about with Vista and 7 took to whole nother level of decrepitude. But for most idiots, this OS will be just fine.

Mojave is definitely working for me so far, being Joe blow not doing nothing but installing and running Internet stuff. Then again I ran the toolkit so all the crap is gone :p

I would definitely pay $50 bucks for each bit version of this OS..

Uninstalling RTM right now

Lost a full second on wprime32m (went from 9.8 to 10.8 :O)

installing winFLP now, and will try out RTM again to make sure. (in a dual boot) if it still does not cut the mustard, oh well

Running RC 7100 now also with only one issue.

When using a FTP server to host image files you get errors when trying to copy files to teh FPT server and nothing will copy... something like "The Handle is Invalid", this is a known issue and should have a fix soon.

Any of you guys on RTM, which I have no clue how you got so soon ;) give this a try and see if it works ?

Anyway RC is working fine for me so I am in no hurry to restup my main rig right now. I will wait until TechNet gets it up.

Should have FLP results in tonight to see if it is my CPU dying of the OS that killed my wPrime scores

I know that Windows 7 for me kills my w/prime 32m score. Mine almost doubles in time somehow. I can only imagine the same for 1024m version. Stick with Vista.

I would'nt be so quick to condemn it. This was in Win 7 x 32 with no tomfoolery...

DrNip
08-01-2009, 07:04 AM
Oh I'm not condemning it as I love this OS but it is slower than XP not by much but it is slower. But you have to remember that XP has several service packs under its belt whereas 7 is still only at release candidate!

I lost a second on wP 32m from RC to RTM.

Its cool got WinFLP installed now :) Blazing fast :)

20 seconds from cold steel to a usable desktop.

Odd, my Win7 install was every bit as fast as my TinyXP in wprime....
