:welcome: cowboy :) If you are going to game any then I would pretty much scratch Apple. Really you are going to get more bang for the buck buy building your own. Do you do any encoding? Out of the three task that you named can you put them in order of importance and maybe give us a list of what games you play? You can actually have a killer little setup with your budget. It would blow any consumer Mac away.

Your first two games rule out getting a mac for sure. What resolution monitor do you plan on getting and how picky are you with eye candy? Plus if you do a ton of CS5 work that's gonna pretty much put you in the i7 category because the triple channel and amount of ram will help.

I was going to argue with you until you posted up those prices. The new AMD's are formidable for a daily rig and gamer. I think so anyways.

He doesn't know. We need to help him with that ;) I'm thinking i7 920, lower end X58 (micro ATX maybe?), 6GB of some ok 1600mhz ram, and 460 1GB or 470?

Welcome to the forum...

If you PM me your email address I can work you up a complete build @ the egg and email you the cart. I can do that in my sleep.

Does the $1500 need to cover monitor/mose/kb?

The EVGA deals were for b stock items that only have 90 day warranty and are board only. Also, all MCs are sold out of 920s, just the $200 930s left.

For rendering the AMD X6 Thuban really could be better for him. It depends if he intends to OC, what cooling he uses, how much or what he is rendering etc... But when the app uses all cores the 1090T can beat the 920/930.

Two options would be,

1090T + Corsair 850HX for $420 AR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.432027

Gig 890FXA-UD5 + Antec 900 $235 AR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.435405

Gskill Eco 4gb 1600s $105
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231321&cm_re=gskill_eco_1600-_-20-231-321-_-Product

Mushkin Calisto 60Gb SSD $160
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226151&cm_re=mushkin_ssd-_-20-226-151-_-Product

Gigabyte 5850 OC $280 AR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125318&cm_re=5850-_-14-125-318-_-Product

WD 1tb Black $95
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533&Tpk=WD%201tb

About $1300, add a monitor

Or for Intel swap board, vid card, and ram to a combo like this,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.448451
$590 AR

i7 930 plus Corsair 950TX $385 AR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.431967

At $~1250 with same drives from above, just pick a case and your monitor.

I would not rule out AMD for a gamer...for sure he can build a great rig for less money going that route. How AMD fares with the other tasks I will have to defer to someone else's expertise.

For just gaming I am a Dual Core junkie myself. My i5 670 is just fantastic at everything I have thrown at it. I much prefer it to the 920 it replaced. With the current GTX 280's sli'd or a 5870 alone it is a beauty to use for my 24/7/gamer.

cowboy I would stick to a 930 if you are going i7, you wont get any higher on water/air with the higher multiplier.

I agree with rick, p55 and i661 is really an awesome rig and less expensive. Spend the extra on a gtx-480 or 5870 with the high res monitor.
