Just wanted to say hello, and good to be here. Thanks for the invite rickss69:thumbsup:...and hey there Chicken Patty, I see your name a couple places. Small world huh?
I'll be mostly hanging around the extreme cooling section.....I have found a new addiction :ohcrap:
EDIT: and thanks for the warm welcome Kal-El:thumbsup:
Welcome to the forum!
I saw your hanging rig thread at XS, and I have to say that I'm impressed.
Maybe putting up a build log is in order?
I think you'll fit in nicely here... We enjoy doing things to gear that the manufacturers never intended, so take a look around... ...I'm sure you'll like the crowd and what you find here....

Thank you all for welcoming me.
I should probably start a build log sort of thing, starting with tomorrows fun experiment of boxing in the front of the a/c to see how cold my rad will get the prestone antifreeze.
The box is built from 2" foam insulation, just needs to be installed. Pictures tomorrow.

Your ceiling mounted mobo idea will have unintended consequences as it gets picked up by space challenged overclockers in cramped dorm rooms.

Nice, good luck on the results and make sure you dilute the anti-freeze as your flow will be killed with straight anti-freeze.
Name for ceiling rig: BAT BOX. Now you just need a box of some sort....
I want to do that now.... the woman is going to kill me. :ohcrap:

It's actually a little less than half water right now. Can I use Isopropyl Alcohol...I have a nice unopened 32oz bottle of 91%.....or can I not have water in there?
Kal-EL

I never tried the alcohol route as others have tried but I reckon if you've got enough of it, you can fill the entire loop with the alc.
Finding the right mix of Anti-freeze and water for your coldest temps vs flow rate is tricky, I went by experimentation but didn't document the final ratio. How cold is the coldest your chiller will take you so far?

I don't know......from what I've read, with proper insulation I could hope for -20-30c loaded.
..............So I can have water in there then...and I have enough alcohol to fill half or more of the loop. So I guess it will become a mostly alcohol coolant solution for now.

Are you using the 5k btu or 11k btu unit?
I used a 7k btu and occasionally got down to -42c in the loop. You lose loads of transfer efficiency at the block however but its about getting your feet wet in sub-zero land.
You could also skip the chiller and get a cheap pot, fill it with dry ice and head into -70's :D

6500 BTU Kal-El....should work pretty well. What is the lowest temp you got the CPU to using a water chiller?
I'm sure I'll be trying the DICE thing eventually. 1 thing at a time. How much does it cost for dry ice approximately?
I used to love G&R when I was a teen......I still like all the good songs of course.

Who's G & R
... Koolance V1 does a nice job with Dice from what I have heard
Just got one but have not tried it yet .....
Got mine used for cheap ... think they are about $ 100.. new
Not effective with LN2 so not a dual purpose pot by any means

The Koolance V2 is supposedly better than the F1 for DIcing... the V1 is MUCH cheaper though.
I will going with one of them myself. Probably V2 though.
Welcome to OCA ny!

It was my s775 overclocking days and software temp reading below 0 was entirely innaccurate. I can only tell you that the block reached -42c with the system off and rose to about -25c when benching. Waterblocks + sub-zero liquid coolant = failed efficiency. The waterblock just doesnt have enough mass to it.
Dry Ice prices vary from location to location, some places its really cheap, other expensive. Try calling your local gaspro or airgas or "company x,y,z" in your area, get a quote on dry ice. 15-20lbs is a good long session. be prepared to use the DICE immediately after you purchase because it subliminates (turns into co2) quickly.

You can also google "penguin dry ice" if you cant find it cheaper elsewhere. Might be because I live on the ocean but the local grocery sells it right up front next to the wet ice.
Think its a $1.09 a pound here
