AMD officially kills ATI brand

Some might call it a sad day, some might say that it was about time it happened and some might even say that they don't care, but if you followed the graphics card market before the AMD and ATI merger, you will probably miss the good old ATI brand and logo. AMD has officially killed the ATI logo and the textbook merger is now complete. (I thought it was a takeover, not a merger. sub.ed.)

The reason behind this move is quite simple as AMD wants to make the brand as simple as possible and most of the average consumers simply don't know that there is no difference between AMD and ATI and that ATI simply became a brand rather than a company. AMD wants to promote its Fusion and AMD made ATI Radeon graphics really isn't simple for an average consumer. The decision is a simple marketing move and honestly we do understand AMD, but that doesn't mean that we wouldn't rather see an ATI logo.

AMD will remove the ATI brand from all of the logos so it means that from now on, graphics cards will simply be called AMD Radeon and AMD FirePro while AMD Vision will rule the market. ATI Eyefinity technology will be renamed to AMD Eyefinity. AMD did note that the existing Radeon products and those that are to be produced under the ATI Radeon HD 5000 series badge will not be affected by this change, so it means that you can expect the AMD Radeon HD 6000 series.

It should be a sad day as ATI brand will be certainly missed.

Sorry but I think this is total FAIL. Don't get me wrong cause I want to build me an AMD gaymer for 24/7, but AMD as a company is recognized as a failure. Every uneducated buyer (the majority) think that Intel is so much better. So now you take a brand (ATI) which is making headway and known as a sucess, and just throw it away and slap a name on it that is thought of as a failure. I think they just devalued there graphics side of the business. I sure hope they got some money for tons of marketing to get the word out and build the brand name.

I feel the oposite. The people Ive dealt with that really dont know much about modern PCs think AMD is better then Intel because of the K8 days. Intel has only had the lead for the past few years. Plus AMD has been making great advances lately in the value market.

i agree with cecil...many still don't know which is better.... amd is really doing well..once the 6xxx series comes along...amd brand will increase popularity...its a good strategy on their part...

Every time I walk into best buy or some other place where idiots buy computers I overhear "This one has intel" at least five times. I could be wrong I guess though, but for a while Dell and others didn't even carry a line with AMD, especially stock those parts they did have in retail outlets.

I understand in business terms what they are trying to do here, and it is the perfect move if you are the market leader in CPU/chipset sales, but AMD isn't. That's the only reason I think this is a bad move. Now this could be telling on how well the BD generation will perform, but its most likely just the ignorant marketing department. You also got to think what impact and conflict this will have with OEM system builders. Are they supposed to advertise AMD graphics with Intel CPU's? I don't see intel buying into that. If they were the performance/market share leader then it would be a moot point and therefore look like a smarter move.

Now the other option is this and its a totally different angle. Two phase actually. First would require AMD really putting some money into advertising the Fusion platform. I mean everywhere you look....fusion, fusion, fusion. If that campaign is successful the next move would to be strip the crossfire license from intel on the new P6x, X6x series chipsets, leaving intel with only nvidia. Once again this requires AMD keeping the performance crown on the graphics market. Personally I think the latter part is not likely to happen. No better way to kill sales. It could be pulled off though with AMD taking the lead in the CPU business.

What this could lead to though is the swift takeover of nvidia by intel. Hell they are buying everything else right now. :ohcrap:

a) Intel is the largest GPU manufacturer in the world.
b) Nvidia is all about GPU over CPU. Intel is so CPU over GPU it was found the CPU accelerated the IGP on one of the GMA series (I forget which one)

with 6000 series gpus branded AMD they might see a increase in cpu sales based on association.

TBH I don't care if they call it the supermodel series SX-69 humdinger or the crapola de garbage pail OUH8IT. As long as the price/performance ratio is right in my budget range I will buy it.

For us in the DIY crowd this means nothing. I'm looking at the whole discrete VGA market and the un-educated buyers in it. I could see intel buying nvidia. Of course they are going to base their argument that their said product is more important. Its their job to market as such. Nvidia has a strong hold on the high margin professional graphics market and have made leaps and bounds in parallel computing. Intel would change their mind quick about GPU's if they bought nvidia.

You also got to realize that everything is moving to the "eco-system". AMD and their fusion brand. EVGA and their entrance into the PSU and case market to have an "SR-2 eco-system". Everything is all about integration and keeping as many customers running everything with your name on it. Its the future. I think the only reason EK started making radiators is to have that EK eco-system. Now he can sell full water cooling kits featuring nothing but EK. Hell he just started selling EK branded water pumps even though they are a re-brand.

The people like us will know whats what. The average Joe doesnt know the difference between AMD, Nvidia, or VIA. They will just get whatever falls in their budget, and probably pick it based on what software is pre-loaded :laughing:
Then the third group are the ones who know to ask questions, even though they dont understand 90% of it. They will get help from someone they know or a sales man, who should know that AMD = ATI.

I dont really see it being a problem. Maybe a very small percentage will ignore them due to the name, but for the AMD fans, and those that dont care whats in the computer, it wont matter.

Yeah we might know but the average Joe no. I know my corporate office goes with what ever is cheaper. AMD, Intel they don't give a shit. They went with AMD because it was cheaper. To them a computer is a computer. Of course none of this really means shit to what is being spoke about in this thread as none of my computers at work have a GPU. AMD is CPU, ATI is GPU or was GPU. I really don't think it matters WTF the name is as long as it performs.

buy yeah dr you are right, i am at Lipscomb University and all our F%#king computer are AMD they are slow as hell and takes forever to just log in...
all they really care about is money... non of our computer has a stand along gpu... that makes my laptop is the best computer FOR SURE!
