GlobalFoundries Moving Into World's Biggest Wafer
9/28/2010 (http://www.overclockaholics.com/date/2010/9/28/globalfoundries-moving-into-worlds-biggest-wafer.aspx) by: Theo Valich - Get more from this author (http://www.overclockaholics.com/author/2010/9/28/globalfoundries-moving-into-worlds-biggest-wafer.aspx)

What to do if you're working hard on becoming world's largest foundry? Have an headquarter that looks like your core business. While the Ferrari's facilities look from the distance like a race car, GlobalFoundries is getting ready to do "one up" on the rest of the silicon industry.

According to this story (http://www.ameinfo.com/239243.html), first ATIC leased 6,840 m2 [73,600 sq. ft.] i.e. two and half floors of the building, as a part of multi-year build up of GlobalFoundries in the Abu Dhabi region. Then Geoff Akiki, General Manager for Abu Dhabi Cluster at GlobalFoundries made the followng statement (http://www.aldar.com/press_release_article-355.en): "We're pleased to formalize this relationship with Aldar and look forward to moving into our new home at HQ. Innovative in design (http://www.overclockaholics.com/forums/#), this facility will provide us with services we need to support a growing operation as we expand our regional footprint and scale our presence in Abu Dhabi."

Al Raha Beach is 14.7 billion dollar development called "ultimate water-front city", created by reclaiming the land from the sea and creating a majestic skyline. The building is being built by Aldar, government-owned investment arm that specializes in real estate development, but also owns a share in Daimler AG, parent company of brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner.

As you can see on the image to the right, HQ is world's largest wafer and looks like a combination between a silicon wafer and a Stargate from the popular TV series

We haven't received any news on the size of the building, but by looking at the three-storey building that is on the ground, there is no doubt in our minds that this building is "huge".

Doubtful...

Really large skyscrapers are being designed today with holes in the top of it to reduce the effect of the wind.

Being near a large body of water means constant winds I live a few hundred feet from the bay and wind gusts here are terrible (40MPH is not uncommon, and thats on a nice sunny day. Storms are far worse)

Will be interested to see if this blows over LOL

What alternative did they have? VIA? Cyrix?

For GPU I thought nVidia was looking at moving to GloFo too...
