I gotta order a wireless router for the outlaws this evening. It will be used for a wired connection to the one PC and wireless for ipad, iphone, occasional crackberry (me), and a second PC on the wireless network soon. The house is a fairly long one story and the ipad and second PC will need to access the router on the opposite end of the house, if possible. If not, then I'll get some power-line adapters. Goals are to have very strong wireless signal and as cheap as possible without getting junk. Basically I'd like to stay with netgear, dlink, or linksys unless you know of a kick ass router from another company.

Linksys ftw imo. I've never had a problem. As far as signal strength.....before i locked mine i found out that my neighbors about 150ft up the street were taping me. He casually mentioned that he appreciated that when he comes up from the city he gets free internet access from someon in the neighborhood. And, had a great signal. That was about 3 yars ago when i first got it and didn't know how to secure it. lol pwned.

I tried that initially in this house Chuch and got so frustrated with it going down all the time that I went under the house with lan cable and hardwired everything. Best thing I ever did.

Nips suggestion with a Tomato Firmware (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato) would work nicely.

The Linksys should be sufficient enough as I'm sure his in-laws aren't gaming or anything of this nature. LOL

Ya the main reason they want a router is for the ipad. I hate wireless too, but wifi is nice to surf on my crackberry.

Yep mother-in-law is an avid farmviller. Nah they just need internet access. Speed isn't that big of a deal but always nice to buy for future needs.

If your in-laws are anything like mine or my parents or of anybody else of that nature, they won't need wireless N. Wireless G will be just fine. Not to mention Wireless N cost too much and the hardware for it is kinda shatty. One would think after all these years it would be cheaper and better than what it is.

Ya those gay facebook games are the only bandwidth eaters they use. The rest is just web surfing and online banking. That doesn't matter though since the main PC will be on wired LAN. The biggest thing is being able to pick up a good signal in the other end of the house with the wireless for the ipad. Most of the wifi phone usage will be near the router anyways.

The old Linksys routers were great. The new ones with the internal antenna suck. Try one of the Asus DDWRT capable ones instead.

Gonna try. It's been a heck of a wild ride this year. So much, that I am out of the loop on hardware, so I will probably lurking around so that I can get caught up again. Maybe I will have to make a thread in the General Section to catch up with y'all.

Old D-Link was garbage, their new stuff seems pretty good. Old Linksys was good, the new ones seem to be garbage. Que sera, I suppose.

Personal experience, mostly. The main issue with the new Linksys is that the internal antenna hurts range pretty badly.
