Alright men, here is the plan. What im looking for is a bench station that is easily mobile in the trunk of my SUV to take too and from my office and house :)
It needs to be layer to accommodate a PSU on the bottom with HDD's and DVD drive and then Have a top layer for motherboard.
Here is the kicker, I need a monitor mount built in with some sort of 90 degree locking arm to store the monitor while in transit face down to protect it somewhat.
SOOOOO, any thoughts on materials and or mock ups. I was thinking wood because I have easy access to it and saws etc and the weight of wood would help to stabilize a monitor arm.
-compact (maybe 2ft by 2ft?)
-weight (under 50lbs)
-looks dont matter toooo much but I like a clean build
-does not need water cooling stuff
-2 tiers
-Monitor 1680x1050 of less in size maybe 19"
Hope to hear your brainstorming ideas :)

Hey Al,
I can design and build this
I need the monitor though
I recommend a slide for the monitor to attach and detatch.
Folding it over creates problems as you would have to mount and disamount pots and cards and would have to get rid of any sort of PCIe fastening devices
easier to slide the monitor off and carry it seperate, to incorperate it woth out having to dismount on board hardware is possible but it would make it rather high and top heavy
I will draw it up and post it .... to build you would have to send me the monitor.

What are your thoughts on the LCD ?

Im not sure on the LCD yet, def attached some. Maybe it could still fold over the top if there was like a foot of clearance?
It doesn't necessarily have to fold down either just an idea. Not going to be a big one or anything just 1680 so I can troll hw in heaven too

LOL
Alright I will put a pencil to paper and see if I can com up with something.
Problem is, does LN2 splash like dice???
it will make a mess out of an LCD if it does

ln2 does splash but it wouldnt damage the screen, the vapor would do more damage then the ln2 imo. Screen could be mounted on the front maybe?

Mount the PSU hdds and mobo IO panel on the opposite side that the monitor mounts too.
Should balance it out pretty well.
If you make it more than 18" wide, splash should not be a huge problem and you can still have simple access to the front edge of the mobo for 24 pin, power/reset/clear cmos buttons.
You could even take it a step further, and make the bottom level like 12 inches high so the motherboard area sits near the top of the LCD.
Slide in rails instead of a VESA mount would also let you flip the LCD around 180 degrees for protecting the screen during transport. (Like 1" thick U-Channel covered inside with foam tape)

Could you rig a Kindle to work? At least you could pass the time reading up on something while awaiting a 1024 result. :taunt:

Ouch. 1024 is easier than 32M on SB...

How about mounting everything inside a hardcover suitcase. You could line the bottom and top of the case with MDF. Then you could actuallu screw down the psu, motherboard and accesories to the bottom and sides of the suitcase. and vesa mount the monitor to the inside top of the case. Then when you open the case wallla benchtime. Just plug it in. When you're done just unplug close the case and thats it. Plus you would have a lock on it to keep prying eyes out. I have a nice 12' monitor that would work sweet for that kind of setup. Hell i might even make one myself. The possibilities are endless with this idea.

Man I was thinking of some type of creation like this before my daughter was born. Never went anywhere with it. Good luck though!

wow bench rig in a suitcase, me likes the idea :) I just dont know if there is enough clearance for a pot or tall cpu cooler though

I didn't think it wise to move it around with a pot mounted. But if you oriented the mobo to be offset from the monitor i don't see why it wouldn't work.

True, and I think things just got a lot easier. I stole a monitor from my fiancee's moms house to leave at my office rofl! so it just needs to be a fairly standard bench station now :X sorry men! That means suitcase should be perfect.

Add wart removal to your Optricians business and make LN2 a write off :)
On a serious note, rig in a suitcase is something I have wanted to do for a long time but that is a bit out of my league.
I even have an old style portable PC in the attic where the front is a keyboard that doubles as a IO cover I considered modding.

A pelican case portable bench station would be schweet. You can mount the monitor to one half and board and stuff on the other. Something like that.

I've really been thinking of how to do something like this also, as I am headed out to Minnesota for a couple months to work but I'm flying.
I'm so not gonna be benching. It's just way too much stuff to be lugging 1100 miles. I'm going to have so much free time to waste out there too.:Dizzy:
