I recently attempted a repair of a co-workers laptop. I tried some of the free stuff available. I eventually installed Norton Internet Security 2009 and did a scan. Excluding tracking cookies it had 681 viruses, trojans, worms etc. His browser showed hundreds of porn sites.....but he told me he doesn't go to porn sites. You should have seen his face when I showed him his browser history! :ash1:

Anyhow, there was so much damage I ended up doing a format and reinstall. Works every time.
I always say "sleep with the dogs you get the fleas"

If you sleep with fleas, does that make you a dog?

Anyway, if you find yourself stuck and your client or co-worker insists on retaining the operating system and file system, you must give these sets of instructions a try. I've repaired two co-workers systems so far.

First co-workers system was impossible to reach the desktop and run any type of program or command prompt. The virus reset the exporer and several processes every 5 seconds. Running thru this guide cleaned everything up nicely.

Second c0-worker was a porn king. Nuff said :rofl

Computercops isn't around any more,
I used to be with them.
And there are an infinite number of freeware applications out there;
You need to be very careful about which ones you install on your machines,
You could end up with ransom ware on your machine and then sometimes the free stuff downloads trojans.
If you want a free online scan you can get them at several places,
My favorite is at eset.com.
you have to use I.E. and its active X controls to get the free scan.
It will remove all malware it finds.

After computercops I started looking around a site I had been registered at for a while and that was calendarofupdates.com.
The webmistress is donna buenaventura she is a microsoft MVP and very security conscious.
The site is a daily stop for me as they post the latest vulnerabilities and updates for anti malware.

My Pastor had trouble with her machine and I had her drop it off here and she had 76 trojans on it and couldn't figure out why people in los angeles were charging airline tickets on her credit card.
She let her grand kids use her Administrators account on her machine for recreation.
Never give kids Admin rights, they should only be allowed Limited rights.
Limited accounts cannot run an executable file, they have to have Admin approval first.

There are dangers everywhere on the web and you can get a download just by a drive by shooting when on a compromised server that is serving up malware.

A free 30 day copy of trojan Hunter 5.1 can be gotten at Misec.net and it will remove all known Trojans in one sweep of a system.
If the trojans are in system restore, which i disable on all machines because i use Acronis for back-ups and to restore a partition,
then the trojans will spawn themselves out of system restore after a re-boot.
then the cylce starts all over again.
