Tried this experiment the other day with mixed results. Two 110 cfm fans on GTX 280's. I improved on most bench's with a 8600/790i Ultra combo, but the card in slot #1 still got pretty hot. Most likely because of the thickness of the fans...as you can see it butts right against the adjacent card.

Are those tornado fans?
I never realized that there was that much room between the 2 cards.

You should rig up an air duct for the top card, and have the fan parallel to the motherboard. Pretty sweet mod though.

Yeah you might try smaller width fans see if you don't get better results.

If I'm correct, 780i was one of the boards with really nice PCI-E spacing, so I'm assuming theres another slot in between there.

Yes, those are Vantec Tonado's. Very thick fan too.

I agree...the fans are just too thick to work well in that configuration.

Yes, there is another slot in between the two. That pic is of a 790i Ultra SLI mb.
