Intel Debuts its 6th Generation Core Processor Family and Z170 Express Chipset

Intel announced its first 6th generation Core processors, codenamed "Skylake." Built on Intel's swanky new 14 nanometer silicon fab process, and in the new LGA1151 package, these processors bring DDR4 memory to the mainstream, and offer IPC improvements over the previous-generation Core "Haswell" and "Broadwell" processors. Making its debut at Gamescom, Intel is starting its lineup off with two chips that are predominantly targeted at the DIY gaming PC crowd, the Core i7-6700K and the Core i5-6600K quad-core processors. More models in the series will be launched towards the end of this month. The company also announced the Z170 Express chipset.

Closing Thoughts

I think it's safe to say that, although Skylake's performance isn't going to make Haswell users jump out of their seats to order immediately, consumer that are on Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge might finally have a line in the sand to step across. The Core i7-6700K is an incredibly fast desktop processor that will be able to handle your gaming, media encoding and web browsing with incredible efficiency and at nearly the same performance level as those $1000+ processor still taunting us with their 8-core setups. The CPU is unlocked, overclockable and easy on the wallet (in the grand scheme of things).

In this piece we are going to look at both the Z170 chipset itself, the benefits that come along with using Z170, and then the motherboards that are set to launch equipped with it. Intel’s details about the chipset have been some of the briefest we have experienced in any recent Intel launch, although we have been able to piece together various aspects of the design from a number of sources. We have been promised more detail about the system during the Intel Developer Forum in mid-August, to which both Ryan and I will be attending and asking plenty of questions. A lot of the detail about Z170 in this piece is mirrored in our main Skylake review as well.....


~One big shock will be for Windows 7 users. By default, the Z170 chipset and BIOS will not support full USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller (EHCI) mode. This means that for a number of circumstances, USB devices will not work unless an XHCI environment in play.~

!!!!Navigate to BIOS
Enable ‘Windows 7 Installation’ or ‘EHCI mode’, Save and Exit.
Have your Windows 7 image on an optical disk. USB sticks will not work!
Install the OS as normal via the optical media. Install OS drivers/USB 3.0 drivers.
Disable the BIOS option.!!!!!!!!
