So it's not that small.

my e8600 no matter the clock has been best at 4 threads

always set your threads on wPrime double your logical cores .

so if you use i7s use 8 thread and if you use C2D use 4 . another things is important is your OS !

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that wprime needs to be set by threads, not cores....

Think its an intel only thing (I do not know for sure). Did not improve my times at all setting 8 threads on my AMD quads.

Seen a lot of guys with e8XXX say set 4 threads it helps. Have not seen any AMD guys saying that though.
