Unit is here!! I will post some pics up when I get a better reception with the cell phone. Gonna fire it up and make sure she works tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully I can bench by mid week :D

ocgmj 04-05-2010 09:50 AM

Kick ass!

Neuromancer 04-05-2010 09:51 AM

Sweet. I will live vicariously through your endeavors this week while I am away.

Chuchnit 04-05-2010 11:06 AM

Oh boy!! I just turned her on for her first cycle and she pulled negative temps quick :D It took about 45 seconds to go from ~42c to ~-15c.

First impressions..... Unit is way smaller than I imagined, but heavier than I planned on. Noise levels are below my expectations.

Chuchnit 04-05-2010 12:32 PM

Update: She just finished her third cycle. I'm gonna give it about three more before I call it and say all the oil is back in the compressor. So far the longest she has ran is 2 minutes. Max temps so far is -45c and I think that is about it until I get some lower ambients. -45c is reached right at 1m 30s and holds steady from there.

I can't wait to get the time to insulate the board and get to benching. :D

Thanks for all the support guys. You make life enjoyable. Sadly, its almost 6pm here and I'm at the office. I think I'll have myself caught up enough to get everything prepped and ready here soon. Maybe one of these days all these late nights at work will pay off.

Neuromancer 04-05-2010 12:56 PM

LOL glad to here it is looking so Good Chuck :)

Sung to the Tune of Stevie Ray Vuaghn's "House is a rockin'"

When you BUS clockin' dont forget to raise the vdimm!

Buckeye 04-05-2010 03:00 PM

As where ever a person lives at that is different than where the builder is, temps will be some what different. Like Kals 2 stage Casade, here unloaded was -111.7, but at his place its -106

Also a unit with a very low unloaded temp will generally not handle a load very well. From what I understand Ron tuned it for max loaded temps, and that will effect the unloaded readings making them a little warmer, but it will handle loads better this way. Its a big balancing act.

But unloaded temps really mean nothing

I got a little update for you guys. She just finished her sixth cycle since I got her yesterday. I'm gonna fire her up in a bit and let it run for a while. I haven't gone over about seven minutes so far. The lowest temps yet are -49c on the last cycle for just a second. She worked back down to -45c when the compressor got warmed up.

Witchdoctor 04-06-2010 04:14 AM

time to mount and rider

the SS that is ..........

Chuchnit 04-06-2010 04:24 AM

How hot is the compressor supposed to get? It gets hot to the touch after about 2 minutes right now. By hot I mean I have to move my hand after about 10 seconds.

That's pretty normal. On my original SS, 2 stager and 3 stager, you'd have blisters if you left your hand on there for 10 seconds.

Good news. I just wanted to make sure it was operating normally. I didn't want to leave it on and burn the compressor up. :ohcrap:

ReverendMaynard 04-06-2010 05:20 AM

nothing to worry about Chuch, they should operate pretty warm, just try to keep the air flowing around it.

Witchdoctor 04-06-2010 05:26 AM

The condensor fan should exhaust over it ....
My recip gets pretty warm, but never has been so hot I could not rest my hand on it ???

I know the the rotaries get smokin hot ....

Chuchnit 04-09-2010 04:11 PM

Finally...... getting ready to prep up the OS's and try to get this thing mounted. Do you SS guys unmount everytime you turn it off?

Witchdoctor 04-09-2010 04:13 PM

Not me it is forever ..... Not sure if that is good, but I am lazy bastard ....

Kal-EL 04-09-2010 05:57 PM

Chuchnit, I've left the cascade head on for a while now, about 8 startups/shutdowns without removing. Just need to insulate well.

Witchdoctor 04-09-2010 06:02 PM

Good cause I'm a lazy bastard too :P I'm pretty sleepy so my goal has moved now to just having my multi-boot setup so it's guns blazing tomorrow.

Chuchnit 04-21-2010 09:50 AM

Alright guys I have a little update. One of those good new/bad news situations. My unit was damaged very slightly during shipping. Whatever it is that comes out of the compressor and turns into the suction line must be dented a little or something. When I unboxed the unit, I noticed the insulation looked like it had rubbed up against the box during transit. The unit was actually packed very nice, but the poor boxes looked like they had seen better days. The unit will run, but it just don't hold the temps like it should. It will actually settle to -35/36c with a stock 920 under it after running a while. My guess is flow is interupted somehow??

Now to the good news. I have been in contact with Runmc from day one. Of course with my schedule it was over a week I guess before I really got to test it. Either way, Runmc is in the process, and is 50% done with my replacement unit. As we stand right now, we are waiting for UPS's reponse to paying for the damges and shipping back to him. They got a few days more though since the unit probably won't be done till the end of the week. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up. So far Runmc has been very fair and honest with me, and I am trying to do the same by being patient. As of right now I give him a thumbsup in the customer service department. I'll be sure to update you guys fully with pictures when I get the replacement.

Patch 04-21-2010 09:55 AM

Top notch customer service gets rewarded with more work. Good luck with the new unit.

Splave 04-21-2010 09:55 AM

I work in the optical field and we get a shit load of boxes everyday in deliveries from fedex ups and usps and to tell you the truth USPS boxes are never crushed. My baby phaser made it to romdom without a hitch and thats across the country! MAybe try a different carrier than UPS next time ?

glad he is working with you though, very glad!

Patch 04-21-2010 10:02 AM

Ditto on the UPS. Boxes are always trashed. Even after they had to pay to replace a $650 LN2 transfer device because they managed to throw it on the concrete and dent a brass fitting.

Sure does  Runmc kept telling me it was damaged, it was damaged. I kept thinking it was nothing more than just a little wear on the insulation. Either way when he saw the pics, he informed that indeed it was busted.

What type of optics? I have a ton of optics buddies from my days in the core. Worked right next to them and even had to handle RMA's when I was deployed.

So far, so good on the outcome. Now just waiting on the final product to come and have a proper unit.

USPS boxes are the worst about being crushed here. The mail man at my work half the time comes thru the door kicking the boxes in. The other half the time there is stuff leaking, spilling out or just straight torn up. That's why I never ship USPS or try not to because they are shitty here.

Chuchnit 04-21-2010 10:15 AM

Another update: Here is my replacement in progress.

Gunslinger 04-21-2010 11:35 AM

If you're meaning the hand bent coils to the right of the compressor, they are to take the vibration out of the tubing, saves on the brazed joints that way.

Chuchnit 05-03-2010 03:26 PM

Little update here. UPS first said the package was indeed damaged in transit. Then the very next day they try and deny that claim. :lameass: Anyways, here is what was just in my inbox.

I just did some load testing on the second unit. It is holding 300watts at -35C. I can try add/subtract refrigerant, but overall I think it is at a good spot. The compressor doesn't get extremely hot as you said the last one did. I can ship Wed.

FACE 05-03-2010 03:28 PM

Sounds like a winner for the 3d grind homie!

Witchdoctor 05-03-2010 03:31 PM

Awsome bro ................

In for the results .... insta cold FTW

Chuchnit 05-03-2010 03:32 PM

Yah that's about where Sdumper says his units are tuned to on 300w. So it should be interesting.

DOM 05-03-2010 03:59 PM

i thought you had already got it :p

First it'll be going on my i7 920. It'll stay there for the most part. I'm prolly gonna try some older VGA's on it too. Mainly this is so I can bench more often and tune a little for ln2.

I did get a unit. The box looked like it went to hell and back when it got here. Here is the story.

You can always have it tuned heavier later.... or converted to a cascade ftw!

Since it's settled in, mine hasn't seen more than -38 on load @ 5ghz. On a good night it stays below -40... If I inced the probe closer to contact it would probably read colder, but what's a couple degrees at that point?

We still going to race? (vroom vroom)

Not sure yet. I still gotta pick some up. I've been looking around for some good deals. I might try it on the vmodded 4870, but the load might be too big with extra vcore.
