When are you planning to go after it again?

I was thinking maybe straight Jack Daniel's for coolant... :)

My $25 (non-submersed)submersible harbor freight fountain pump pumps 70% antifreeze @ -40C very slowly, but effectively.......and stays nice and chilly in it's 6-pack cooler. But it WILL NOT work if there is air in the lines, and I don't think it would work as well if I hadn't modded the block. And you definitely don't want to end up like Pedro. |
Ok, using this resource as a base I found out a couple of interesting things that can help out my testing.
http://www.ashland.com/pdfs/technica...sh%20Point.pdf (Color coded to make things a little easier on the eyes) Liquid in the Cooler Liquid in the Loop 90% Alcohol / 10% Water: Freezes @ -57C 70% Ethylene Glycol / 30% Water: Freezes @ -64C The Alcohol / DICE in my cooler was pretty much a frozen paste and the anti-freeze in the loop ended up as a frozen slush. So the above specs do make some sense in my real world tests. 90% Alcohol / 10% Water: Freezes @ -57C 50% Methanol / 50% Water: Freezes @ -54C 60% Methanol / 40% Water: Freezes @ -71C Methanol / Water may be worthy of a test run. Just need to make sure I have a fire extinguisher ready :) I could also test a lower grade Alcohol which would raise the freezing point. That would help keep the cooling medium from freezing and still be sub-zero. 70% Alcohol / 30% Water: Freezes @ -29C 50% Ethylene Glycol / 50% Water: Freezes @ -34C Might run the latter test today....or tomorrow. Success!!
Went out and got 4lbs of DICE, 1Gal Preston Anti-Freeze, 3 bottles of 70% Alcohol and 1 bottle of 90% Alcohol. Made a 50% Anti-Freeze / 50% Di-Water Mix for the loop. Dropped 3 bottles of 70% Alcohol in the cooler. Added 2lbs of DICE slowly bring down temps. Kicked on the pump and watched the magic happen. Within 20 min of slowly adding DICE to the Alcohol temps dropped from 25C to -20.5C. Ran at -20C for an hour then added a bottle of 90% Alcohol to the cooler along with some more DICE (which brought up the alcohol content in cooler from 70% to 75%). Within 5 min temps in the loop dropped from -20C to -25C. So far I've been holding -25 for 4 hours. I'll keep everything running till I run out of DICE. No problems slushing in the loop and also no pumping problems. Next I'll shot for -30C by adjusting my Alcohol/Water mix. http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/DSC02854.jpg http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/DSC02867.jpg http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/DSC02874.jpg http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/DSC02875.jpg http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/DSC02886.jpg http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/DSC02899.jpg Thank you for reading, OCM  |
