Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity Edition Spotted
Among the three main high-end graphics SKUs AMD has in store for this 23rd known so far (namely Radeon HD 5850, HD 5870 1GB, and HD 5870 2GB), is a fourth distinct SKU called the Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity Edition. This is a variant of the Radeon HD 5870 with specially-designed connectivity that makes setting up to six displays possible/convenient for making use of the Eyefinity multi-display technology that lets you span a display-head across several physical displays like a mosaic.

On its panel, the card has a large air-vent occupying one slot, and six mini-DisplayPort connectors occupying the other. Necessary cabling will be provided to connect to the displays. While each accelerator supports six displays in all, multiple accelerators can be installed on the same PC without any multi-GPU setup, to scale the size of the resulting display by up to 24 displays and up to 268 megapixels of effective resolution. It remains to be seen if there are similar Eyefinity Edition SKUs based on other AMD GPUs in the series, especially considering the fact that the company is also eying the business/productivity market segment.

Suggested Radeon HD 5770 and HD 5750 System Requirements

We told you about Juniper cards earlier and now let's check out their system requirements. Looks pretty similiar to Radeon HD 4770 except you need at least a 600W for Crossfire.
  • PCI Express® based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard
  • 450 Watt or greater power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (600 Watt and two 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)
  • Certified power supplies are recommended. Refer to http://ati.amd.com/certifiedPSU for a list of Certified products
  • Minimum 1GB of system memory
  • Installation software requires CD-ROM drive
  • DVD playback requires DVD drive
  • Blu-ray™ playback requires Blu-ray drive
  • For an ATI CrossFireX™ system, a second ATI Radeon™ HD 5770/5750 graphics card, an ATI CrossFireX Ready motherboard and one ATI CrossFireX Bridge Interconnect cable per graphics card (included) are required
Another bit of information, both cards are double slots and HD 5770 is 8-layer and HD 5750 is 6-layer. Pricing ranges from US$149-199. Also, there is another cheaper Juniper board on the horizon.

Looks like I missed the run on the 5870's with (1) per customer over at the egg. Did anyone here manage to bump some old lady for a card or two?

Gunslinger 09-24-2009 01:31 AM

I was only able to snag one myself.

Kal-EL 09-24-2009 02:41 AM

Plot to drive up demand and prices?:rroulette:

DrNip 09-24-2009 05:32 AM

Yep, alot of buzz about the product for months but no supply on release date equals major demand. Wouldn't be surprised to see some vendors jack up the price some as people will pay it right now. I ain't pluggin in. I am waiting for at least a $50 drop before I jump on them. Seeing that it is ATI that should be in about 2-3 weeks.

I like the way that ATI PCB's look so much cleaner with less stuff on the board then Nvidia's, add the fact that the chip itself is so much smaller than Nvidia's monster chips and performance is still there.

Was hoping the Asus Voltage Tweaker version would be there but its GONE!

It's a tough waiting game, I'll tell yah. For instance, waiting here next to the window for the UPS truck is killin me.

spfoam1 09-28-2009 01:01 PM

Damn....if I had any time I'd buy some 5870s. I have been trying to put a spare parts rig together for 6 months, and I haven't had the time to finish it. By the time I have any time the i7s will be history.

Nah, you'll just need the westmere six cores i7 that run on the x-58 and Shamino clocked up to 6ghz already on an ES :ohcrap:
