x58 platinum 920 D0 A stepping PAtrioit Extreme Viper 3GB 1600

Starting off with some pics

From unpacking to first setup to modifications. I added some stiff paper to the side of the hammer for better air flow control, (Have not tested effectiveness yet) and a fan to help cool the blazing hot chipset (will re-TIM it later)

HAve not stressed Mem yet

Currently running

200x21 +.1v (1.325-1.35 effective)
1600 MHz Mem speed at 1.65 volts. Gogin to get this closer to 2K
4890 at 1000/1125 for an AM3 run at 50% fan speed

Soon as a I figure out how to change TGA to PNG I will upload my 280k result at the bot. Its low and no boints, but its a start :)

Neuromancer 09-30-2009 03:11 PM

First results. 6.968 seconds wprime 32
215Seconds 1024Wp

first sub 10 second spi1m :)

32M pi crashed the PC. Upped vcore to ~1.4 and trying again (untweaked OS mem at "stock") lol was 1.375 instacrash though

retrying now at 4190 220*19

Neuromancer 09-30-2009 04:03 PM

Well going to have to spend more time on this. It is no 775 for overclocking for sure. Hopeing it is more like AMD, take care of themem and the IMC and then worry about core.

Going to play around some more in the 4+ GHz range and try and figure it out :)

Temps are amazing even at 1.4vcore though. Cant beleive people say these run hot *pshaw

(course modding the hammer really helped. I think it dropped temps at least 5C maybe more like 10 :) )

Kal-EL 09-30-2009 06:40 PM

I know you told me already but I forgot, how'd you mod the Hammer again?

Oh and keep pushin Neuromaniac :D

thebanik 09-30-2009 06:43 PM

You got PM bro, hope it helps.....

Neuromancer 10-01-2009 05:14 AM

thanks banik. Think my kids are throwing me a surprise party tonight, so no more OCing for me today :(. Got a little frustrated last night trying to run 32m at 4.2HT. And drank some more beers instead of working on it lol

I might not be juice happy enough as your PM after reading your PM, temps were reasonable so far though with the slight increases I was giving it. wprime 1024 only heated it up to high 60Cs.

As for the hammer mod I noticed when it was running that a LOT of air was gushing out the sides. More than out the back of the heatsink. My aunt got me a little birthday card from the store (real small one) I just ripped it in half and taped it to each side so the air is forced to pass all the way through the heatsink and most importantly, reach all the heatpipe connections.

It definitely seemed to help and when I next have some free time I will take the board out and redo the NB heatsink, and mod up something a little more permanent for the hammer. I would also like to get another panaflo on there :) And some more xigmatek fan mounts. I have a battle axe cooler sitting here un used that I took the fan mounts for.

Something that just drops over it and could double as a shroud right out the cases rear exhaust (I am sure someday it will go in a case again lol)

Kal-EL 10-01-2009 08:11 AM

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NEUROMANCER!!!!!!!!!

:Hi: happy b-day neuromancer :clapping:

Neuromancer 10-02-2009 03:17 AM

Thanks Kal and mini-female Kal :) lol

Cecil. Interesting you mention playing with the voltages first. Running AMD for the last year or so, I forgot how much voltage plays a part in heat generation on Intel Chips. On the K10 architecture clock speed and CPUNB freq play the biggest roles on making the chip run hot. I actually fully accepted this to be fact when I was accidentally running 1.6 vcore at stock timings and temps were great lol

Got a shit lot to get done these next couple of days, i7 is staring at me with those lonely puppy dog eyes, oh thats the dog, nm...Hopefully will get another crack at it this weekend if not later today :)

I may have forgotten to re-disable C1E after a bios reset (updated bios) which is why I was having trouble at 4.2HT with spi32m.

I am not too worried about CPU clocks TBH, just want them high enough to not be an issue for some 3d benching. My 2D benches I will stick with AMD 'thar be boints in them thar chips' :)

Kal-EL 10-03-2009 06:19 AM

Git er DUn!

Neuromancer 10-03-2009 12:50 PM

Yah my life is shitty. Home right now but have my kids with me. I can get some time to get some posting done, not really much time for OC/Benching... (that requires a lot of time, stress and beer) Monday Tuesday are my free time days, but now my family wants to cook me dinner and make me drink beer with them *sigh

Kal-EL 10-03-2009 03:09 PM

Oh, that sounds like the rough life "Beer, BBQ and Family", you poor bastard

Glad to hear you're havin some QT with the fam bro, family first, oc second, breathing 3rd and oh yah Jay Oh BEE. hehe.

Neuromancer 10-10-2009 07:48 AM

Got a little free time, so I am going play today :)

Starting with the memory though to find stability at higher speeds. Then I can concetrate on the BUS and then the CPU :)

Installing a special XP OS right now, instead of WinFLP. Might not handle the 2D benches as well I cant really compete for boints there anyway.. hoping it will help out in PCMArk05 and some 3d benches though :) MWAHAHAHAHA

If it works I will update my PCmark thread :)

Kal-EL 10-10-2009 08:09 AM

Awesome for you buddy, glad you could find the time :D
Looking forward to some progress, howz the hammer treatin yah?

Neuromancer 10-10-2009 08:13 AM

Seems to be handling the job very well. At stock Idle speeds (as reportedin BIOS) are BELOW 30C :)

And it is a little warm in here too :)

Once I get XP installed, fix the vista/mojave boot manager, and IMAGE THE DAMN DISK THIS TIME

I will find the limit of my memory.

Oh quick questions, read but unsure. c1e has to be enabled for turbo to work? (not sure if that is right or not, would explain my board not booting lol) So should I enable it, and set multi to 21 or disable and leave it at 20

Kal-EL 10-10-2009 08:24 AM

I'd disable the c13 bro, leads to instability when pushin the clocks. This is the traditional observations, I've not tested on this generation, I just disable it altogether.

Neuromancer 10-10-2009 08:35 AM

K I disabled both.

Wow... .

Gotta say Intel has brought the snap back :)

Running at 1.6 GHz 1600Mem at 8-8-8-1T fresh install and it is sooo snappy. Reminds me of my AMD rigs :)

Quite an improvement over core2

Neuromancer 10-10-2009 10:15 AM

UGH MOTHER>>>>>>>>

Formatting an reinstalling

Memory is not stable loosened to 9-9-9 and about 10 minutes in Linpack locks up the computer.

Load temps were 60-64C at 133x21 1.24 vcore

Vista locked up while defragging the XP partition so that new install is borked. Also my DX10 version of XP did not help the transparent windows test.

Going back to 9-9-9 2T at 1600 1.65 and reinstalling windows.

Partitioning with Vista since windows 7 insists on installing a 100MB partition at the front of the drive :s

EDIT: And I am a tard. I burned the wrong ISO, burning and reinstalling AGAIN

Neuromancer 10-12-2009 12:33 PM

Okay no performance difference in PCMark with DX10/11 addons for XP :(

But... next step is taken. Picked up another 500GB WD Black, should have it by friday :) Little raid0 action should vastly improve my score as so far the two weekpoints are HDD and Transparent windows

Looking back through scores on hwbot, I decided to see if I could get any extra info on the high TW scores in XP and can't find the guy that did it.

Actually I am wondering now, if the XP mode thing in Windows 7 might help it out. Gotta be a way to eliminate 2D mode from XP, and allow hardware acceleration. From my research it supposedly is not possible without WDDM drivers, there must be a way though....

ah well, going to work on the DDR3 tonight and see if I can figure that particular annoyance out. Looking at the bot, with the right OS tweaks, I think I should be able to pull some 2D boints outta this CPU (just need to get into the 4.5 GHz range for wprime and tweak the crap outta these ram sticks :) )

Kal-EL 10-12-2009 12:57 PM

Dude, you're a pcmark nut!

May I introduce you to a few other benchmarks?
AM3
3D01-Vantage
Pi_Fast
Wprime
Super_Pi

:taunt:

69_Goat 10-12-2009 02:01 PM

Virtual XP in Win7 will probably hurt scores big time. I've run Solidworks in VXP and there is quite a bit of lag.

Neuromancer 10-12-2009 02:07 PM

LOL

Yah if it takes a 5% in all tests, that makes it even with Vista :) The 2000% increase in transparent windows would more than make up for it :)

Mastered the wprime and Superpi on AMD (I think anyway :p)

i7 is driving me batty though. I think I need a better board.

Voltage adjustments are in +/- for half of them with no reporting of what they are actually running at. I set QPI to +.1volts so if it was running 1.1 stock it is within .5v of the vdimm and worst case scenario running at 1.35v stock it is at 1.45 which I read was MAX acceptable.

No software clocking that I have found yet, MSI tools are crap, both the OC center for the CPU and afterburner is a bunch of rubbish as well for video card

Reboot takes too dman long on this so I want to play with some bus speeds in windows with monitors so I can examine some things and test without having to load the OS a hundred times (It will come to that of course but its nice to have a park to play ball in :) )

Think I left b2bcas on auto contemplated setting it up to 6 right away, but decided against it. Rather get to a point where I can see if it has an effect before I start playing with it :)

Going to grab setfSB and cross some fingers. Oh and install ASUS voltage tweaker and see if I can get the right rivatuner for ATi :)

Neuromancer 10-12-2009 02:32 PM

Okay read the setFSB website and found a similar x58 MSI board, and setFSB reads everything correctly :)

Going to play with some ram speeds now :)

Kal-EL 10-12-2009 02:54 PM

Ramming speed bro, ram-man. Good luck. I see 4.6ghz in you're future.

Neuromancer 10-12-2009 04:13 PM

ME too.

finally got frustrated with these sticks and ripped the spreader off of them to check out the ICs.

Micron D9JNM single sided sticks on the Patriot Extreme series Viper ELK 1600 MHZ cas 9 setup available at amazon for $50

Looks like I was just being to too scared of the juice. When I booted them near 2k I must have had vdimm on auto or somethin', cuz I cant run clocks past about 1800MHZ on these at 1.65 9-9-9-2T But I see these ICs closing in on 2K at 7C if they are juiced

So really need to find out if for certain QPI Voltage IS VTT on the x58 platinum (supposedly it has a big effect on bclock OCing on this board, which would make a lot of sense, so going to add some more fans up QPI to +.25v and give the vdimm a little shock therapy :) 1.85v MWHAHAHAHAH

Fortunately my AMD rig with LV sticks will still be running when I torch this puppy lol

Neuromancer 10-12-2009 04:38 PM

MWAHAHAHAHAHAA Not hating DDR3/i7 anymore :)

Ok I know you guys do ALOT better but I was having trouble at 9-9-9 timings

So 2,000 MHz trichannel at 8-8-8 is pretty good for me :)

http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=765125

1.32 QPI 1.82vdimm thinking 7CAS runs might be the next thing to try :) Nah...
Now that I think I have the memory under control, I can drop clocks and voltages and get back to the CPU and VGA clocking.

Chicken Patty 10-12-2009 06:28 PM

I know i'm late, but I just came across this thread. Happy late b-day bro :)

Good job clocking the ram too!

Neuromancer 10-12-2009 07:17 PM

Thanks

Been a trying evening for sure. I am done for tonight :(

My last DVI cable died. (4 for 4)
Could not get any stability past 4 GHz HT though.
Can boot at 1.25 4GHz.
Can linx at 190x20 or 200x19 at 1.3ish

tried up to 1.45 for a 205x20

Might have been stable I dont know after first test temp hit 90C so I killed it powered down and there she sits

Time to bust out the 25' VGA cable and bluetooth wireless desktop suite and window mount this bench station I think (after I complete rip down reseating/pasting of the sinks. IOH and CPU)

Might be a good idea to start looking into water cooling too

90șc is ok for short bench sessions, but its a bit more than what I like to see in real temp.

Neuromancer 10-12-2009 07:47 PM

Just PMed yah back.

And in the time it took to hit send and the new posts button I want the pump LOL

Just need to come up with the money. Looking at finding a way to budget upgrade to the R2E also, by grabbing an open box one they were on newegg for about $230 before there is a ful lretail one on ebay for $330 (I cant afford that though.. not until I have a means to cool my CPU further, well still cant afford it... but dunno might be worth selling off my AMD 920 :o if it gets me a good board and WC setup lol

pump is yours bro :)

I sent ya another PM. check it out when you can. Speaking of selling, I sold my Phenom II 940 rig for $250 a while back.

Phenom II 940
DFI 790GX
TT 650W PSU
48501 GB and something else, but can't remember. All for $250. Imma go cry now.

Neuromancer 10-12-2009 08:11 PM

DAMN

Wish I had seen that deal.

Chicken Patty 10-13-2009 03:28 AM

Well I never posted it. Offered to a friend, and he took the deal. It was a sick deal dude!

Neuromancer 10-13-2009 04:59 AM

Well OCA fever strikes again, picking up a block and pump from our buddy CP :)

Going to keep my eye out for Rad deals, currently eyeing up the 480 swiftech rad.

Imma get to you pms now. I have a rad also pm me if your interested. Although I had decided to keep that lol. I know you are not a fan of black ice rads but maybe a good deal will convince you to like them lol :)

Neuromancer 10-13-2009 08:12 AM

Geez, I just may have to sell my AMD setup now after all lol

(Gotta get wireless PCMCIA card for my laptop first, only one USB port and the internal card I bought will not connect *sigh)

Neuromancer 10-13-2009 08:14 AM

Oh just found last night that my x58 platinum, the latest BIOS enables SLI, eventually going to have to get some cheap nVidia cards for bointing too :p

Chicken Patty 10-13-2009 10:14 AM

Awesome news on the bios enabling sli :)
