FACEplant

I decided to fore-go the whole "tech station" trend and go nutz on my desk.

It isn't finished yet, as the last of my stuff is on the way ;)

Then this showed up, and I couldn't resist.....

So after a loooong morning of running around town, I decided to stop and reward myself with a little dice-scream.

I didn't get much out of my old 780i, which I have all but pronounced dead. She did good up to 4.6ghz, but got squirly a tad higher, and I couldn't get it under control for the rest of the run. Clocked it all the way back to 1600fsb just to get it to boot again. Couldn't push it past 1800fsb no matter what I did.

Oh well, I honed in the pot, and timed the DICE really well and kept it around -70 the entire time.

Above all, fun to build, fun to bench. More pics of the underside when all is tidy. :D

Here is more for the monster....

Yeah.... lol The NB and SB were running so hot that I had to pull out the old a/c mod hose to blow cold air over the board.... POS 'till the end. Going to spring for a topower i45 for more 775 benchies later.

Nice job face!

When my desk was in the designing stages I was planning on running a setup much like that one as well. Looking good :good:

FACE 02-25-2010 05:09 PM

Thanks all!

More to come. Getting the classy prepped right now for a test run with this 920 C0... Once I've beat on this chip (ever so gently) it's going back in the daily.

Setup for this weekend (package pending):

Classy 760
920 D0
Mushkin Black XP3-12800 7-8-7-20
Every GPU I own :D

Yeah this guys knows! The Giga EP45-UD3P or the EP45T-UD3P (DDR3) are sweet boards as well.

FACE 02-25-2010 06:02 PM

DOH! I think I either have a CB or a bad mount on the chip.....

now I sit and wait....

Splave 02-25-2010 07:24 PM

Prob a cold bug around -40

I love your desk though :)

word, maybe even around -30 on the e758. I got slightly better results with the extreme cooling setting at level 1.

I'm looking at the ddr2 giga board now. I'm going for something to handle pretty much all s775 crapola. Does the ep45t handle p4's and cellies? If so I'll probably grab that instead..... The prices on them are really nice!

be careful..... ddr2 will have FSB limits... thats where ddr3 helps because it has the higher multi so you can crank the memory down and still run the fsb wayyyyy up...

whereas unless you have some really good ddr2 your gonna be limited to around 550 to maybe 600 or so FSB

FACE 02-26-2010 07:29 AM

Yeah, but does the ep45t do 800mhz chips? I have a ton of netburst to own on.

a P5B Deluxe would own those chips.

FACE 02-26-2010 09:46 AM

got off my lazy ass and looked up the support list.... I must have one.

May want to volt mod it if needed. I'ma blow this board to bits.....

epic for sure, or commando if you can find one (too expensive imo)

FACE 02-26-2010 10:42 AM

ep45t is on the egg for <$150 shipped so I'll probably try my luck with that..... Haven't been in a gigaBIOS before.... should be fun!

ReverendMaynard 02-26-2010 10:49 AM

did you check the supported cpu list FACE?

FACE 02-26-2010 10:52 AM

yep :D I should be golden..... only thing I should need is a car battery and a few good lengths of power-line cable to volt mod it....

FACE 02-27-2010 11:29 AM

Got what I was waiting for.... Thanks Marc! :Hi:

Small bubbles formed after I rolled it on. I'm going to have fun working those out. It feels more like a rig than a desk with holes in it now. :D

Neuromancer 02-27-2010 11:34 AM

hah hah SWEET

FACE 02-27-2010 11:35 AM

I just noticed that my camera is taking pictures funky.... Does that look wall-eyed to anyone else?

Gutterz 02-27-2010 11:38 AM

their is a slight bevel at the edge of the desk on the bottom.

Great mod love it

FACE 02-27-2010 11:41 AM

Thanks....

Yeah, the vinyl is perfectly square, but it looks noob-cut in that pic. Looks like the camera is about to be taken behind the wood shed. :gun10:

Kal-EL 02-27-2010 08:48 PM

I like it :)

kikicoco1334 02-27-2010 10:11 PM

i really like that setup!
i got a 780i lol wishing i got a 790i

Oh yeah, it's hot. running raid through the SB makes it even hotter. It runs fine at stock clocks, so its destiny now is in my htpc. It's been a good board though. I really had to abuse her to get her in the condition she is in.

For the build:

HDD cage was extracted from an old Dell scissor case. I have extra slides on spare drives for quick-draw swapping.

The thermo is wired for ac and housed in a XBOX 360 dvd drive shell. It was the perfect size, and when the probe is not in use, it easily tucks away in the left side.

DVD rom is mounted with thumbscrews. I mounted L-brackets to the underside of the desk with springs to keep vibration down.

The PSU mount was made from another PSU, it's solid as a rock, and I fashioned an aluminum bracket so one thumbscrew holds it securely in place.

I measured out the top 10 holes with a motherboard, and used a punch to make the indentions for the drill. I picked a drill bit that was a tad smaller than a mobo standoff and drilled roughly deep enough to fit a standoff in. Stadoffs were driven in with a hammer.

The board standoffs are just 20 stainless mobo standoffs and 10 thumbscrews. As long as the surface mounts are driven in flat the standoffs line up perfectly (duh).

Marc designed the vinyl, and does excellent work! The logo on the corner is still visible with a board mounted (except classified x58), and I couldn't be happier.

I am working on a bracket to hold the pci-e cards in place, mounted to the top in the same fashion as the mobo.

Leave most of the bubbles, they should work themselves out after a little while, it happens with the vinyl on different surfaces.

hahaha, just about fell outta my chair.

It does seem odd though, I mean the picture. Like out of round.

FACE 03-17-2010 06:48 AM

Yeah, the cam is an old 5mp beastie... I have a new camera, but have been using that old one since I can't seem to pry the new one out of the gf's hands long enough to actually use it.
