Alternatives to acetone?
Anything maybe less stinky or flammable?
|
|
Clear Springs grain alcohol
works great with Hawian punch too |
Odorless mineral spirits the only data I could find on it said freezing point of -76
Also said boiling point of 340 so pretty sure that is in F, and would freeze up with DIce Just need a couple shots of grain in there right? that might be doable. |
Isn't grain alcohol as flammable as acetone? Don't top fuel cars run on that shit?
|
91% alcohol worked o.k. for me. I dunno which one was worst, the acetone or the alcohol. Both of them are really jacked up when you're sealed in an airtight office with an a/c unit circulating fumes.
The acetone fumes make u jumpy. The alcohol fumes make your eyes burn and you can taste it after an 8 hour binge. Ventillation is kinda important. |
Yeah grain alcohol is flammable I thought it might be less fumy though especially at -70C
If I have a tracking number on my CPU tomorrow, I will pick up some rubber eraser and I guess hit Homedepot and grab some dryer vent and some acetone :( I got warm clothes so will just crack on window a smidge and have a HS yate pushing fumes out the other window. |
We used Grain when I was dicing witj D and Gun back in Janruary
worked great... i did not notice the fumes .... but I may be immune to them ...... LOL |
Might just make me thirsty
(Remember Rich finish the Benches before the bottle) |
Isopropyl alcohol did the trick for me and I dont really remember it being really stinky. :cool3:
|
Hmm not sure if I have any 91% laying around still might have chucked them, simple enough to go get some more though :)
|
Ive got a bottle of mint rubbing alchohol, smells like Listerine.
|
Use vodka

I use it with the Phantom Dual Wall setup at max LN2 temps it did freeze solid. Here you go... • Wood alcohol (methanol) – freezes at -97.8° C (-144.0° F) – boils at 64.7° C (148.5°F) • Grain alcohol (ethanol) – freezes at -114.1° C (-173.4° F) -- Everclear Alcohol? Something 180+ Proof – boils at 78.5° C (173.3° F) • Liquors: – 24 proof liquor freezes at -6.7°C (20°F) – 64 proof liquor freezes at -23.33°C (-10°F) – 84 proof liquor freezes at -34.44°C (-30°F) • Isopropyl Alcohol – 90% isopropyl freezes around -90.0°C |
That would be a terrible waste of perfectly good Vodka ????
|
Does alcohol evaporate like mad out of your pot so you have to keep adding it?
|
Yea you just have to keep an eye on it
But we were adding very small amounts like a cap or two at a time |
hmm interesting, with the Phantom I did not have to add any, maybe because the container is so big that I didnt notice.
Be carefull adding room temp alcohol to some thats -70c :ohcrap: |
That makes for the best pics as the steam rolls across the rack ........
Kinda erry looking and mad scientist like ........ :clapping: |
I like acetone. Alcohol tends to gel, acetone doesn't. Just a matter of preference though, whatever works for the individual.
|
Hmm weird I did not have a lot of problems with the 99% isopropyl evaporating... it did turn to Jelly in the DIce snow though. Methinking it was only 70% and they just slapped a 99% label on it
|
Useing Acetone this weekend and it worked great ...
fumes don't bother me one bit ..... I can eat that shit for breakfast ..... :ohcrap: |
Yeah I just bought a bottle of acetone yesterday, and looks like I will not be DIcing for a while LOL.. hmm maybe on the i7...
|
You say that, but then you get the shakes when you drive near the source... then say fork it and buy 30 lbs. Then drive home @ 90mph so you can hurry up and get your fix..... it's ok, we all do it.
:ohcrap: |
