LIGHTNING competitor - Gigabyte SOC2 5870

http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=22657

gigabyte ...also has something similar to msi afterburner ......not sure if its like the afterburner extreme edition...

it has pwm for voltage control too :)

with the binning they're doing..these might be good :)

and gigabyte competitions on hwbot....they might be opening some competitions for these cards....

Assassin48 03-17-2010 05:18 AM

I think Fugger and Mike benched this card a few days ago if i'm not mistaken

Hondacity 03-17-2010 05:27 AM

yep its the one they clocked really good on vantage...

Jor-El 04-16-2010 04:01 AM

GIGABYTE GV-R587SO-1GD Radeon HD 5870

Got mine today with the Lightning money, let's see how it clocks under Ln2!

Now I only need Asus to send me a Rampage III Extreme...

Edit: Not bad on the hands of Andre: http://hwbot.org/community/submission/988590_

If it takes 14 to bin 4 good ones, these will be no better than the lightnings

480s will rule the bot soon though people, be careful investing in a 5xxx right now ;)

I only recommend this card for people that hate nvidia and without any 3d scores (like me). It's a great start and if it hits 1400/1400 it's easy to sell.

You are telling me to buy a 480?:ohcrap:

Jor-El 04-20-2010 05:06 AM

^^ Yes!

Another big disappointment on the retail OC ed. 5870 department:

- Gigabyte choose to lock the SOC Tuner for retail version (no IC support), in other words you will get the 5870 SOC retail edition with a bundled software called SOC Tuner that will not work!!!!

No voltage tunning on the retail cards.

Only hardmods. The good news is the hardmod is easy and the Hynix memory runs 1420Mhz on air with stock volts.

I'll say that it takes 40 to get 4 cherry examples.

Wouldn't a bios flash rectify that?

It's still very odd why Gigabyte choose not to unlock the SOC Tuner for retail, I mean the card ships with the software but it doesn't work.

I posted on Hwbot and would like you guys to chime in that this is a deal breaker and if Gigabyte doesn't review the software these will go back to RMA as 'defective' item.

Where I came from this is false advertisement.

Hondacity 04-20-2010 06:04 AM

this is bad....

the pre-release...like andreyangs card seem to have an unlocked bios...

i think even the pre-released lightnings have an unlocked bios....

lucky prerelease card owners....doing lots of advertising..:thumbdown::thumbdown:

Patch 04-20-2010 06:10 AM

Advertising gimmicry. They know we're a drop in the bucket and they'll never make any money off us. Especially since what we buy will likely get killed and need replacing over and over.

Give a few guys cherry picked unlocked stuff with data sheets and mod suggestions, grab some headlines, then sell all the gamers a bunch of cards with software and BIOS intentionally crippled to prevent mass RMA's.

Sounds feasible and fixable if its just a matter of getting the bios from the "Pros". :ohcrap:

Hondacity 04-20-2010 06:26 AM

msi and gigabyte has been tight lipped about special stuff...unless given to their posterboys hicookie and some.

:ohcrap:they're partners with hwbot!!!

RMA time if that don't work dispute with CC company. My CC company is all to happy to revrse charges and returning the product is not a requirement. I just haveto prove I requested an RMA and they refused.

Jor-El 04-20-2010 11:38 AM

BenchZowner:
"I'm 98% sure that it's a change from the engineers that made the "old" software not to function properly.
The Vddci, Vpci-express & Vmem work just fine, so unless I'm mistaken and my info is bad about Gigabyte fixing this, this shall be fixed soon with a new version of the utility by Gigabyte".

Hopefully!

Jor-El 04-22-2010 04:52 PM

Scratch that ^^

Tested my retail today and OC Guru software works fine, you can tune vgpu and vmem there, it's very good.

Did some air testing 1100/1400 today.

FACE 04-23-2010 02:18 AM

1.30vgpu and 1.70vmem

I will mod it next week and then you will be able to tune vgpu from 1.40 to 1.65v thru software.

Witchdoctor 04-23-2010 06:12 PM

Sick man... wish I had those modin skills

Can't wait to see how it does ....

I am still up in the air on my next global card

Patch 04-23-2010 07:58 PM

Hey Jor,

How does it handle voltage memory?

My lightning artifacts hard at 1.72v.

Hondacity 04-23-2010 09:16 PM

1.72? damn that sounds high...what was stock voltage on those?

Patch 04-23-2010 09:23 PM

I don't remember.

Modded, I'm sitting at 1.67v minimum and that only gets me another 20-30 Mhz.....

Splave 04-24-2010 02:41 AM

the mem on SOC is epic, 1400+ probably wont net much gain but damn thats sick

Yeah these Hynix are great...

It does take voltage really well I used 1.70 just to see how it goes and it's really smooth, for 1400Mhz you don't need to raise volts it does that stock.

I well test a little more today on air for PCM5 2x core and then it's time to mod and ln2.
