Dice Pricing and results
Just putting this out there
Is $ 1.75 a pound a good price for Dice ??? I am going with the pellets as they will fit right into the Ghetto pot And if you were trying to get 4 cards benched AM through Vantage how much would it take Sorry for the nood question but I am a noob at this .... If all goes well I will have results and comparisons to my air runs... |
I dunno about that price man... typical is around $1 a pound. I get the bricks and bust it to dust.....
|
I pay $46 for 12kg, so $1.74 per lbs. That on the cpu alone, lasts me at least 10 hours of straight benching at 5-5.2ghz.
WD, you HAVE to smash the pellets into snow to get the best results. Just jamming in chunks is going to create temp swings and you can't get the volume of DICE in the pot to keep you from constantly feeding pellets. |
I just got quoted $8 for 10lb Block at Praxair
Use this to find a dice supplier http://www.dryicedirectory.com/ |
Thanks for the tip will have to stop at the small kitchen appliance store and pick up a ice crusher... or is a towel and hammer the prefered method
|
place screwed me, they didnt sell in lbs they sold in blocks they said. A big block 7lbs was $30 rofl bastages
4 cards and cpu or just 4 cards and you cpu on SS? Its hard to say as you will run each bench more than once to find a max. |
Hey witchy, check out Genuardi's (grocery store) I believe they have a store in your area, should be $1.09 a pound :) When you walk in the door right next to the Ice machine is a "Penguin brand" white cooler with DIce in it :) Blocks only...
|
4 cards 6 benchies each SS for the CPU
I am a slow bencher though as I always think the next run will do better ...... LOl So figure to run each bench twice at least ..... LOL thinking about 12 hours .... LOL Wish i had a CPU dice pot, may be able to bump my 2D Think I have milked the SS for all the 2D it can do with the 920 :ohcrap: |

I use bags.... the method I use exactly is a gallon freezer bag inside of a trash bag. I've tried other ways, but always end up tearing the bags. I cracked the shit out of my cooler breaking it up inside (lazy). Hammer, meat tenderizer, whatever's convenient and solid. A flat rock would work too. :Hi: |

Good price but they are like a 40 mile trek .... till I get the gas and time wrapped up it is close to a wash ..... :ohcrap: |
If you are benching one card at a time, 20-30 lbs of dice should last all day...
|
I take an old pillow case, and put a plastic bag inside of it and bash it off a concrete floor/wall. Another thing I do is have a small styrofoam cooler to keep my snow in for ease of use (can sit on my bench desk) and keep the pellets in a large plastic beer cooler.

10/4 guys will use this advice on Saturday I am pumped to have some sub zero GPU action
now I just have to decide what cards to dice up ... do I go for the big daawgs first od the flat out dogs...... LOL have like 20 freaking cards to bench ......... |
start with the shite ones to get the hang of 'er brother.
|
$1.75 is alright. Here it is only $1.39 at the local Homeland store. Wal-Mart here also has it. No need going to a supplier for me. Have you looked at your local grocery store or Wal-Mart?
|
Yeah a lot of super Wal Marts have it, the little penguin cooler in the front
|
Savemart has them as well as Smart n Final
$1.13lb |
What I did was hit the yellow pages and google for ice vendors locally. I ended up finding a small ice place that measures out the blocks on an old style spring scale. Those places tend to give a little extra because they know it'll evaporate away before they can sell it all anyway. I always get a couple lbs extra. :D
Do some local hunting and you'll find gold  |
Crap I never thought Wall mart or save mart would have it ....
Kewl ..... I agree Rev think I will go with the weaker cards first to get some practice .... Hope I can scroung a few more boints out of them ...... |

Man my Wall mart does not have it ...... bummer
O well at least I can get it close to my house here is the line up and crap to get ready to roll Picking up acetone tommorow and preping cards Saturday pick up Dice and have fun Cards under the gun will be 7600GT 8600GT 9600GT 8800GT |
Unless you have software voltage control or vmods you wont get much from dice, stock voltage maybe another 50mhz.
On the ones you can adjust the voltage though, its a ton of fun, crank it up and fly! |
7600s can be pencil modded :)
(Maybe the rest can, I dont know) I know for a fact the 7600 can though since I have 2 of them as well :) I have not done it yet but have read the guides. |
Do you have a link to the 7600 mod?

Thats the one I was going to try. think they have them at guru3d too (probably better explained at G3d TBH |
Thanks bro I will check it out ... getting all the stuff together to prep the cards so all I have to do is change the pot .....
Small snag ... just found out that at my local State Store where you have to buy liquor in PA that grain alcohol is illeagul in the state ........... WTF is that all about I have no idea does anybody know what else I could use as an activator for dice ??? Thanks PA is only one step above communism ............... :ohcrap: |
acetone mate.
|
Vodka... "One for the pot... One for me."
|
does it make a diff? or they work the same ?
and acetone where do you get it and any special brand or anything I would imagine if I go with Vodka it would have to be Russian so I could do one for the pot and one for me method ....... |
Go down to lowes or home depot for acetone
|
Or hit up the grocery store for isopropyl alcohol 90+%
I have not had a chance to compare it to acetone, I do know that cold alcohol has almost no oder though :) |
EPIC FAIL
Not sure where I am going wrong here ..... No video on two cards ..... Boots fine .... just no vid .... Seem to have good contact as I have taken it apart to check ... looks like it si good to go .... warm the card up and it boots to the bios then save and exit to no vid again Pot is reading -60C Sucks .... |
trying a little warmer

Wow pain and suffering .... after mega fail and the loss of an 8600GT :ohcrap: (May it rest in peace) I finally got the 7600GT to work ..... the good news is I had a blast ...
It was frustrating but when I finnally got it going it was all the sweeter  Here is a pick of the pot and an 01 before and after |
I pay around $20 + tax for 20LBS. Last time I went the dude only had 10LBS in stock and since I called ahead and the chick on the phone said they had more he felt bad I guess and gave me the 10LBS for free. :D
|
Nice one Witchy :) 671 is pretty good for a 7600 IME. (guys on the bot are really clocking like mad, but no doubt are all hardmodded)
I am lucky to get 600 on my 580MHz stock card :s |

Thanks man.... yea some of the clocks are over the top for sure.
I am real pleased with the results of the 7600 and learned a ton. Once I get the hang of this I will be working with some more serious cards .... For now though I will be working with retro cards so if they die it is not the end of the world, but I have gained a ton of confidence with this first success .... Here is an AM comparison |
Nice work witchie.

Thanks OC ... starting to get comfortable with this dice action and loving it, It may not be Ln2 but I am working it out ... did the 8800GT last night.
Here is an 03 and a Vantage comparison |
Get any cold bug issues with that 8800?
|
Not at all .... my best guess is that was the problem with the 8600
not sure though but when I took it apart it looked like it had good contact but could not geet it to work ..... towards the end last night I added more acetone to make up for low dice supply .... literally speed benching and sweeping up the dust to make it to the end ..... LOL but there is a temp penalty to having to much as when I started was running about -58C going into the last benches temps were only at -49C but I limped through 03 at a bit lower clocks but still good enough for a 31 spot bump If I would have had a better 8800 GT may have been able to pull down an 8100 to 8200 Vantage for some hardware but the 8800 GT I have is easily the biggest POS I have ever used ..... SO I was happy just to get what I could Seems like even under the cold Vmods are needed for many cards to compete for hardware This is the shit, loads of fun ... it is great having something to do while the benchies run ...... |
