Thermometer Shopping

I'm going to be ordering a SS unit next week and now I need to get a quality digital thermometer. I am either going to get the extech EA10 or UEI DT302. Where do you guys find the best deals on these? I'll pay a few dollars more to deal with a quality retailer.

ocgmj 03-23-2010 06:36 AM

A few of the guys have bought theirs from here: http://www.testequipmentdepot.com/ex...FcdS6wodUz6g0Q

I have a EA10 and it has not let me down yet.

Witchdoctor 03-23-2010 06:39 AM

I have the linked one

Flawless so far except the batteries that come with it are garbage

Congrats bro you will love instant cold ..... better than Tasters Choice ........

Who did you go with ....

ocgmj 03-23-2010 06:40 AM

Yes good point Witchie, change POS batteries.

ReverendMaynard 03-23-2010 06:43 AM

big up to the EA10 massive. Still have my stock batteries though, no problem with the lol.

Witchdoctor 03-23-2010 06:47 AM

LOL....... mine died the second day

ReverendMaynard 03-23-2010 06:50 AM

30 hours plus benchin on mine and they're still strong. Got lucky I guess.

Chuchnit 03-23-2010 06:54 AM

Thanks guys. My builder will be Runmc from xs. For those of you who have access to the fs section, he has pics up there. There are some pics of his last batch on his website. undertheice. It says 250w tune on the site, but he said they are really tuned at 300w.

ocgmj 03-23-2010 07:02 AM

Nice! Ron does great work.

Witchdoctor 03-23-2010 07:02 AM

Cool bro you should see around -45C to -50C @ 5Ghz idol then ....

mine hangs in at about -48C

Instant cold is gold ...................

Chuchnit 03-23-2010 07:03 AM

I'm so pumped! I almost feel like a little kid on Christmas. Insta cold is going to be good. Plus i7920 arrived today :D

Witchdoctor 03-23-2010 07:07 AM

yea where they really show their effectivness is your ability to bench on a moments notice ... great for a busy life style of the active bencher ....

Ahhh this is starting to sound like a commercial ............ LOL

Congrats bro in for the results

Chuchnit 03-23-2010 07:27 AM

I'm going to try and max this cpu out on air while I wait to do a comparison. Maybe I'll do a review on it when it gets here? My problem here is the insane cost of ln2, and the available time to fill the dewar. I have to use it the day I fill it because of the bad vacuum. Most days I don't get home until 7pm or later. This will make life so much easier "at the flip of a switch".

I was really torn between a SS or hardware. I chose the SS because of the longevity that you get out of it. Hardware goes EOL as soon as you get it.

DrNip 03-23-2010 07:29 AM

I had the UEI DT302 and was great. Only thing that annoyed me about it was the auto shut off on it. Kept having to turn it back on. Might have been a place to turn that setting off but never got around to looking.

Need to start saving for a ss or cascade myself after I finish building this computer I am working on now.

FACE 03-23-2010 07:40 AM

I grabbed a temp controller like the one Splig has... I wired it a/c power and plug it in to the wall.. no batteries, no auto shutoff. $40 on ebay. It is very consistent from my exp. with it.

Splave 03-23-2010 08:36 AM

probably shitty probes, but my ea10 doesnt go below -167 even if I submerge the probe in my pot.

Well, probes I can buy and try, but I'm not paying $269 for a Fluke 52 just to be more accurate at >-160c

Chuchnit 03-23-2010 09:07 AM

Here is the link to some pics of the last batch of units. http://www.under-the-ice.com/product...c9b8e17c4c9215

I thought that Danafoss was a 3/4 hp? It's not like it matters. I've seen strong results out of 1/2 hp untis before. Yes he is using chilly1 spiral with this build.

Witchdoctor 03-23-2010 09:44 AM

could be a 3/4 HP .. they are almost imposible to tell apart with out reading the lable

sure regaurdless of what it is it will kick some seerious butt ....

Thanks! I almost went somewhere else until he worked with me on the price. He made it too attractive to pass up. Plus the unit is sitting there already built which helps. I hope I can manage a good review for you guys so we have yet another builder to look at for quality builds.

Patch 03-23-2010 05:34 PM

Congrats, you're gonna be stoked.

I picked up a second hand Sdumper SS on a whim for cheap a few months back. Best $300 I ever spent. It's already paid for itself, and then some, in the LN2/DICE money I've saved tweaking settings.

I've got 3 thermometers (UEI DT200 and a couple cheapos). Biggest variation is in the probes. Good probes measure accurate temps, but even bad probes seem to measure fairly consistent temps. And consistency is a lot more important for our purposes than accuracy.

ocgmj 03-23-2010 07:12 PM

Congrats for sure Chuch! Look forward to the SPI tweaking :)

Thanks guys for all the tips. G-money, you are da man. I just ordered the UEI DT302 off testequipmentdepot that you referred me to. I found the unit cheaper somewhere else and they price matched it with no questions asked. Total damage is $122.36 w/ free shipping.

Hondacity 04-13-2010 11:37 AM

i just received my uei dt302 as well.....130$ more or less....two k type probes...brand new...

DrNip 04-14-2010 12:20 AM

Thats about what I paid for mine off ebay. Great probe just hated the automatic shut off feature. Like I said though, I am sure there is a setting to stop this.

Hondacity 04-14-2010 04:46 AM

how to set auto power off to 90minutes.....dt302.

1. switch on
2. press set up for 1minute, you'll be in set up mode.
3. scroll down using up and down button...
4. once in APO(automatic power off) press enter
5. then set timer using up and down...press enter when done...you'll be back to APO

done...

Little update here. Frackin' testequipment depot can suck a big one. They sold me the metere while forgetting to mention it was out of stock. I called them today and found out they had to get it from UEI so they can ship it to me. If I don't get a tracking number tomorrow, I'm cancelling that freakin' order and going somewhere else.

DrNip 04-15-2010 10:43 AM

I would try ebay. I don't see any there with free shipping but they do pop up as I got mine with free shipping. They are going for around $123 plus $13-15 shipping.

Chuchnit 04-15-2010 10:50 AM

Dude I have never ever bought off ebay. My sister tells me I'm a big puss, but I just don't feel like going through the drama if I get scammed.

DrNip 04-15-2010 10:53 AM

I've purchased a lot from there and like it. Just need to use some smarts when shopping there as with everything.

FACE 04-15-2010 10:55 AM

Chuchnutterz.... I can do your bay shopping if you want... Better yet, I can let you borrow my 2nd temp reader when it gets here... :ohcrap:

Kal, is that you? I always thought FACE was a real person :P

Nah man, I'll give them a call tomorrow. If they can't come through I am cancelling and going somewhere else with my business.

FACE 04-15-2010 12:00 PM

OK, my bad.... I just thought "chuckles" was getting old.... Trying that one out to see how it felt..

Put the boots to them -- Medium-style.

Ebay's safe as long as you look at companies as opposed to individual sellers. The key criteria to look for:

1. Feedback (duh)
2. Multiple units. If they have more than one, they will cost less typically and not give any grief about returns if something is dead.
3. Location.... make sure there is a location, not a general "United States" since that usually means "not in the United States."

Chuchnit 04-15-2010 12:29 PM

chuchnutterz is cool. I was just joking around. Call me whatever. Hell I'll even answer to Susan.

FACE 04-15-2010 12:34 PM

Susan it is!
