ASUS Rampage Extreme III testing thread

So the new hyped ASUS board is in my hands and I figured its time for a thread where we can share our experiences with it. First of all I have to say that I'm not too impressed with the quality of this board. Reading around the internet I found a few sources which were indicating that the placement of the TIM on the X58 and the southbridge were terrible. Well I took the sink off today and this is what came into the light. I thought the days of using this NOOB gluey gum are over. I guess not. :Dizzy: Also one of the screws was not screwed all the way in on the southbridge causing bad contact which you can see in the pics. Another thing is the X58 part of the sink. It looks like there is 3 threaded holes in the sink but only 2 screws were holding it in place. Can someone with this board check on this for me. I replaced the TIM and mounted a WC block. This is it for now. My new ram will be here on Friday so the initial testing follows during the weekend.

Also the more I have been inspecting the including accessories the more I think this is a used board which was sold as new to by me the Egg. Accessory bags taped closed with regular office tape is not exactly stock. WTF Egg?

there she is :)

I wouldn't be surprised by the egg after we all got seemingly used lightnings. Hey maybe you got my board from the contest, see if splave is etched in the back jk ;)

clock that sucka!

What block did you put on it?

Yeah lots of prints everywhere. I'll take this thing for a round of abuse and if she is not behaving I'll RMA it. :keeporder: Eraser ready and off we go.

DrNip 04-28-2010 11:14 AM

Wow, that's shitty man. For that price that thing better come out the box shining. Not all finger printed up. You might chat with Newegg about this and tell them about your experience. Chances are they will get another one out to you. Post up some shots of the BIOS when you can please.

Kal-EL 04-28-2010 11:26 AM

Update your first post with the bench session results and bump thread as necessary please.

And dayum those asshats. Opened my box, no prints anywhere, looks fully new.

Testing coming up during the weekend and when I'm done with it I decide if its a keeper or not.

Patch 04-28-2010 01:07 PM

Mine looked new. My lightning sure didn't.

Guess I should have removed the sink before prepping, but I got lazy and really need to get to benching. Temps so far are great on "NB" and SB. Off to flash Fermi BIOS and play with ROG connect (now that I figured out I wasn't pressing the damn connect button next to to the connector......).

Yeah I was reading the manual today. What do you using for the ROG connect? I have a Netbook with Bluetooth. I'll try to use that.

Kal-EL 04-28-2010 06:19 PM

I'm waiting on the I-phone app to come out.

Patch 04-28-2010 08:07 PM

Just using a dell studio laptop with the USB ROG connect. I don't really trust blue tooth to work well during razor's edge overclocking. Basically, it's evbot without having to meander through the menu. The post string also beats trying to decipher LCD codes. One thing inferior to evbot is that it locks you out during post/boot so you can't do on the fly tweaks to get you into Windows.

Alright. ROG connect works and thanks to Shannon I can give my 480 almost 1.4v.

Time to start prepping for cold. :D

Kal-EL 04-28-2010 08:10 PM

Good tid bit of info regarding post/boot :)

Hondacity 04-28-2010 08:10 PM

set your ramtimings well...also in xp use the delayed startup to manipulate settings..

its on the way

You guys will notice that what you set in ROG connect sticks to your bios the next boot so if you where going for 6.2ghz superpi run and you bsod when you restart you will be booting at 6.2ghz so if you fail to boot thats why, gotta tone it down during post like honda said, delayed startup ftw.

So should you move this to the non-stock position?

Splave 04-29-2010 07:49 AM

if you want qpi llc then yes, I would :)

Jor-El 04-29-2010 09:36 AM

Thanks man I have the new board, new GT and the SOC but didn't even bothered to open them yet... Need to cheer up and go back to benching!

Patch 04-29-2010 10:02 AM

Sounds like you got the happy juice right there.

I'm so excited about benching this weekend it feels like Christmas.....or the first day after the wifey's lady cycle ends.

Ok guys I want to set this thing (REXIII+980GT) for 5.8Ghz on Cascade w/ 6 threads tomorrow.

What should I be looking on these settings:
- Dram Freq.
- UCLK Freq.
- QPI Link Data Rate

- CPU Differential Amplitude
- CPU Clock Skew
- IOH Clock Skew

-----
Thanks!

Jor-El 05-01-2010 05:03 PM

Wow might have to tone it down on my Ghz wishes, tried to install OSes tonight without turning the cascade on temps where hitting 85c. I always installed Oses without turning the Cascade on up to date but guess these 980's are heat pumps.

RomDominance 05-01-2010 05:04 PM

If you wanna give me a call tomorrow bro, I will hook you up with my settings fosho!

Jor-El 05-01-2010 05:17 PM

BIOS 531 -non official

BIOS 531 non official (if anyone wants to test)

Rom I will call you as soon as my Oses are installed

Splave 05-02-2010 03:53 AM

- CPU Differential Amplitude

Jack it all the way up

"Increasing the CPU differential amplitude increases the noise immunity of the processor's reference clocks and indirectly increases the overclockability of the processor. Thus, if you face problems overclocking the processor, try increasing the CPU differential amplitude."

GFDuke 05-02-2010 04:18 AM

Subscribed to this thread. Mine comes Wed. I'll def need help. My Asus days are of old.

Splave 05-02-2010 05:50 AM

they just define some things differently, once you engrain what it is its as easy as the classy but more forgiving

ROG connect not connecting

1 Attachment(s)
First dumb question: how do I get the ROG connect working on my notebook?

What I did:

- installed Rog connect bundled software on my vista32 notebook;
- connected usb cable from notebook to usb rog connect port on the rampage;
- enabled rog connect on the bios.

All I get from the notebook is this:

Hondacity 05-02-2010 07:02 AM

press the button near the rog-usb

Thanks Honda the RC POster is working now, but the RCtweakIt is still not coming up.

Do I need to install files on the Asus?
