To P55 nevermore?

Im thinking the ud6 is a great air/water board for a gamer but classy p55 is made for ln2.

Question is, do I dump my p55 and focus on x58 and 3d or do I grab another classy p55? I have like 5x1156 chips too so... Do I just sell?

Im thinking the 32nm quad core xeon might be an option for wprimes if I get rid of p55.

FACE 06-26-2010 05:53 AM

the westmere xeons look pretty win to me. Also, the new gulptown should drop next month, so that may be worth waiting for ;)

I kinda gave up on wanting to bench p55.... I barely have time for the crap I already have.. It's easier to focus if you only have one platform in front of you.

Splave 06-26-2010 06:03 AM

exactly, Im like a pingpong ball 965 to x48 to x58 to p55 all sitting in my dinning room.

Its a good question man. I mean with a great GT you are gonna destroy any scores you are gonna get with any i5. Plus like FACE says it is totally easier to just bench one platform. I am just going to play i5 because its cheap and I just want to. Plus I should be able to rack up some hw boints for the team.

What is your thoughts on the Giga for sub-zero? Do you have any idea what the dealio is? I mean there are tons of great subs on the bot with the UD6. Is the bios less user friendly than the classy? Honestly the reason I won't get the classy is because I can only afford used and evga has started blocking the d/l's for eleet and such. Plus I really want to try something different than evga for a change. If the board sucks it will be a great upgrade for the the inlaws from their 5yr old Dell :P

imo, as active as you are in benching, I would keep the 965, x48 and x58. Dump the P55 to keep it simple. x58 for 90% of your benching, 965 for when you are in the cpuz mood, and x48 when you are feeling a little love for 01 :)

FACE 06-26-2010 06:08 AM

HEHE, whenever I get to benching s775 again, I'm tempted to take all the big caps off the e762 so I can't use it until I'm done.

I get the same way with gpu's too.... It gets hard to focus on just one, especially if the session isn't going my way.

Great post

Idk whats up with the gigabyte  maybe its a bios thing im not sure. I tryed 1.85vcore 1.45-1.55vtt and 5.9ghz was my ceiling on a known 6.4 chip the 661, i680 hit the same exact limit so its def a board issue or 1 key setting im missing.

On my old e760, 250 bclk was the max limit no matter what chip I used as far as 920's go. Brick wall when I set 251. I chocked it up to nb limit after I tried everything I could think of....

Maybe a different ud6 would yield better results? or maybe a 7?

Ya know I haven't played with P55, but I do have a giga P45 in the daily. I tried overclocking it a little, but the bios was like japanese to me. That's why I keep wondering if its a seat time thing. I mean be honest. You know the P55 classy like the back of your hand. ;) Hell you figured out the high memory straps when guys were still having issues. I am just wondering what you could do if you still had a phase changer to get to know it a little more? Still though it would be wise to think real hard about if you are spreading yourself too thin on platforms and limiting what you can do by doing it.

Splave 06-26-2010 06:55 AM

you're reading my mind chucher! scary.
I wish I had a little SS unit for doing just that :( I mean yes guys are using this board to do epic things I just maybe dont have the patience for it when I know the evga so well.

Patch 06-26-2010 08:30 AM

I too am getting bogged down by too many platforms.

5's a crowd right now all sharing the main living room comp so the P55 is getting put into a kid's rig. Cause they really need watercooled i5 670 and a voltmodded 5870 to play Spore and do homework. :green5:

Was researching cases and realized I don't want to look at another case in the living room. Built into desk with wall mounted monitor will be much more visually pleasing. Hmm.......should do a build log....

Jor-El 06-26-2010 08:45 AM

Splave: did you test any of those new Asus P55 on the Asus III X III? Are they any good?

Splave 06-26-2010 09:14 AM

nah only x58

Chuchnit 06-26-2010 09:16 AM

Man I'd love to try out the MIIIE but its price is just too much for my taste. Especially for the platform.

Witchdoctor 06-26-2010 05:10 PM

LOL ... looks good patch

Not sure of your card situation. If you have a ton, 1366 would be a great place to rip them up and liqudate quickly ... with that cash grab the P55 Classy and get rid of thos CPU's one at a time then dump the board on time for the 6000 series release

keep the 775 around fo 01 and ripping budget CPU's a new ass when you need a break from 1366 ...

nothing like some old fasion FSB clocking to have some fun and break up the intensity every once in a while

Just my two cents bro

Rock on ..........

spfoam1 06-26-2010 06:09 PM

Sounds like you have quite a bit of hardware.
I don't know your finances or generosity level but.......
I just bench 'em until I get sick of it and then give it away to someone in need of a computer (someone that can't really afford one). They get a monster rig compared to all thier friends (who used to brag about how great thier PCs are), and I feel like a made a positive contribution to someones life. Who knows, maybe I'll get someone hooked on overclocking. No, I'm not rich or even close to it.

I suppose I would have many more points or boints or whatever if I had all the systems / components I have given away, but I never got into overclocking for that reason anyhow. I'll be honest and say there are times I wish I hadn't given so much away so I could rebench the stuff and get more points.

Just a thought.

Chuchnit 06-26-2010 06:19 PM

Steve your generosity is not matched by many people. Plus I bet your family has the baddest rigs of anybody they know.

Thanks Splave! I wish someone report here what they found out of the Asus top of the line p55 platform.

V2-V3? Honda? Or even from other teams?

Hondacity 07-01-2010 08:10 PM

didn't have much time to tweak that board...

board can't keep up with my p55FTW....

i think v2-v3 has a spare board i can use this JULY 4th Weekend

Do you think it was the chip or the board? Cold boot bug? Does it have a Ln2 jumper?

In all reviews I've seen the board achieves higher scores then the evga and giga clock/clock, but if it doesn't pass 230x27 like my UD6 is useless. I might try an open box when my gift card arrives then.

Hondacity 07-02-2010 07:42 AM

it can do 240mhz easy...245+ is just not doable with my good 670.... my 670 can do 250easy with the ftw...

that was the dead 670....rest in peace

Splave 07-02-2010 08:06 AM

RIP indeed
should have classy in hand this afternoon

aspms* 07-03-2010 07:29 AM

I have MIIIF which is quite similar- my sample can do bclk 265- so far tested only one chip- my new 661 and 670 should be here next week :) hope for nice pts boost in wp category for dual cores :D

about cbb and cb there is simple mod:
http://www.abload.de/thumb/maximusiiiformular440.jpg

I didn't test mine before mod :D but after mod I din't have cbb- only cb @ ~150C, but I have tested only one chip

Nice I am really thinking on giving the M3E a go.
So that mod is the Ln2 jumper on the Extreme? Or do I have to do a similar mod on the M3E to be CBB&CB free?

aspms* 07-03-2010 07:51 AM

Here's mod for ME:

"TW do you see that jumper just above the "Go Button" ? That's in fact a cold bug switch. Die-hard overclockers cool down to way below sub-zero with liquid nitrogen. Typically when an Intel processor hits -90 Degrees C, you can't boot anymore. This is what is called the "Cold bug" in enthusiast terminology. Well, switch the jumper and that issues becomes a non-issue. Very nice. We'll discuss the several micro buttons separately by the way."

hmm maybe it works too, but on Formula I dont have jumper like that!

I'll test it with a DMM prior to modding! Thanks again!

Splave 07-04-2010 04:49 AM

Jor IDK if you need both but maybe its like x-cool on classy + CBB mod?

Chuchnit 07-04-2010 05:00 AM

All I know about the Maximus Extreme is they were way too late to market. Now there aren't enough results on the bot to make an informed decision about spending that much money on the P55 platform. If they could have only lauched that board like 2-3 months earlier.....
