Overclocking Dell inspiron 1520 :)

Going to crack this sumbitch open and beat it up a bit :)

Was mine, gave to my parents, (now they have a macbook  ) gave it back, time to pwn it.

Will get internal shots up ASAP but, I figure there has to be a way to increase vcore to the cpu like a FB or vid mod correct? I will try to find the clock generator (if there even is one?) for raising cpu mhz in setfsb

Specs if I recall correctly
T7500 good HW boints
8600mGT
2x1gb 667

Might have to put a pot on it? :)

ReverendMaynard 06-30-2010 10:44 AM

read it up, although I'm sure you're already on that or have been to that site lol.

This post might help.

rev maynard ftw :) awesome find man, never even looked for it

Kal-EL 06-30-2010 02:08 PM

sweet how they got setfsb working by solding the pin 11 to grnd :)

FACE 06-30-2010 04:18 PM

That is pretty sweet... See if you can somehow mount a phase or waterblock to that mofo... If the chip sits where it is accessable under the kb, just remove the kb and use a usb one so it's out of the way and maybe get the pot on there..

Splave 06-30-2010 04:21 PM

that the plan! :) def takin pics.

Chuchnit 06-30-2010 04:25 PM

This is awesome Splig. I can't wait to see what the hell you can pull off with this notebook. Have you ran any baseline numbers?

Splave 07-01-2010 04:09 AM

its on vista x32 and prettttty bogged down. Going to install win7 tonight but have to fix the DVD drive first. I figure XP would be a pita to get all the drivers installed on and Im going to be so much higher in frequency it wont matter the small hit :)

FACE 07-01-2010 07:38 AM

Xp will go in, and the drivers are going to be there...

All you need for benching that thing:

Chipset
Display
Ricoh or SDcard

I would strip the cover plate off, disable the touchpad in bios and remove it, the modem, speakers, and wifi card. Make sure the battery is not being used.

If yours has a second SATA port, then you might be able to run raid0... but only if it will run the intel matrix crapola. Not the greatest raid, but better than single drive..

After all that, the motherboard and chip should be exposed so you can cool it how ever you want. :Hi:

EDIT: In order to get the top plate off iirc, you have to remove the monitor, but can remount it after the plate is removed.

Splave 07-01-2010 07:51 AM

good Tips :) I might as well go XP then. Thanks face.

FACE 07-01-2010 08:00 AM

np, mang. If you run into any snags getting something off or working lmk.... it's what I do. :cool3:

Splave 07-02-2010 06:01 AM

uh oh clock generator cy28547lfxc cannot be supported by setfsb :(
Tore is all apart last night and found it

FACE 07-02-2010 06:03 AM

I think that's what the pin mod is for.... Then use a similar gen. I would try the pin mod, then look at that thread to see which gen that guy used. ;)

Splave 07-02-2010 06:13 AM

word, im not giving up. Took 2 hours to get at the damn thing.

Hi,
I have also the inspiron 1520 with t7100 and I want to overclock the processor. here are many links, but I dont understand much of them, because I have small english and I dont know much about overclocking.

can someone please make an easy guide how to overclock the inspiron 1520? would be really nice (the temp from the processor is really cold, dont goes over 50°)

Splave 07-18-2012 02:35 AM

hey mate, there is no easy way to do it. You can try throttlestop 5.0 and up the vid and multi that way but for me its super unstable...There is software I believe batch files that up the processor speed to a set frequency but I havent been able to find the link.

Overclocking Noob 07-18-2012 07:24 AM

which os do you have? I can try that with throttlestop 5 on windows xp and windows 7, but do you know what I have to set there exactly?

and cy28547lfxc is the pll? but it isnt supported by clockgen and setfsb? are u sure? I will search tonight the pll with the newest setfsb, maybe it is now supported.

from batch files I didnt found anything, I just found that thing with pll pinmod (but I dont understand what that is lol) and how to overclock easily the gpu with riva tuner. thats all. I also found that http://www.hardwareluxx.de/community...ht-420164.html (its in german). there say a lot of guys that processors with santa rosa are easily to overclock with setfsb (they overclock it, but it looks like that our mainboard dell 0uxxxxx (forgot the name) isnt supported.

one of that guy overclocked his t7100 up to 2100mhz and it didnt take much of temperature.

Splave 07-18-2012 07:40 AM

throttle stop allows you to change the multi

Overclocking Noob 07-18-2012 08:21 AM

ok but it is risky to change the multi with throttle stop? how much more temperature comes? and do I need to disable speedstep in the bios? and how about pin modding?
Quote:

SetFSB does not work by default especially for Dell machines; it requires pin modding of the socket.

And if you're "afraid" of pin modding, (Well there are, but don't look at me) You can also try UncleWebb's Throttlestop, it will enable dual IDA mode thus giving your T9500 a 200Mhz boost to 2.8GHz.

IDA mode is when the processor is using only one core, or at least an application that requires on just one core instead of two to process it, the T9500 will "overclock" one of its core to 2.8GHz, to put simply. But if you download UncleWebb's ThrottleStop, it gives you an option for Dual IDA mode and will unlock BOTH cores run at 2.8GHz, again to put it simply.

Your Dell BIOS is possible because there is an option to disable speedstep. Disabling that option and this 200Mhz overclock can be achieved.

For 200Mhz, it's not alot in real world performance but, hey, it's a free overclock.

For me as a hardware junkie I would attempt the pin modding - But I lack the time these days to try on my M1730.

Overclocking Noob 07-18-2012 11:57 AM

hm I cant get more then 10 multiplier? and I also cant up VID? Did you try the thing with the pin mod? someone got this working with a inspiron 1525 http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell...overclock.html

but when this is also possible on inpiron 1520, we still cant overclock with setfsb, because setfsb dont support the pll, right?

Splave 07-18-2012 12:31 PM

yeah its not supported

Overclocking Noob 07-18-2012 01:04 PM

thats bad. throttle stops dont work for me, and seems to be unstable, pll is not supported, and nobody ever get the thing with pin mod. i would say the inspiron 1520 is really the worst notebook to overclock -.-

Splave 07-19-2012 03:47 AM

indeed, only luck I had there were files called like 2.5 2.6 2.7 etc and you double click it and got that speed. I looked for an hour last night couldnt find it sorry

Overclocking Noob 07-19-2012 10:21 AM

were the files specially made for the inspiron 1520?

and how do you get the pll cypress cy28547? did you took off the inspiron and looked at the mainboard?

Overclocking Noob 07-24-2012 02:04 AM

ok now I got it with throttle stop (trottle stop didnt got it that I disabled speedstep but however) and I dont know what you did there false but for me its stable. for vid I take 1,175 V. but the temperature goes a little bit too high, I guess its because the high vid.

and by the way, the pll cypress cy28547 isnt even the right pll.
