Patch 07-09-2010 09:33 PM

Kid's Desk=Case

Building the kids their own rig from spare benching hardware. (Painted, greased, dented, cut, soldered, frozen, massively overvolted, and otherwise stressed hardware ;))

Want it to blend in a bit, so I'm converting an old desk into a case. (Previously was home to the sewing machine).

I'm no wordworker, but I like drilling and sawing as much as the next guy. Figured I'd post sort of a build log.

Kind of on cloud 9 tonight cause one 'o my rugrats finally showed more than a passive interest in one of my projects. Spent a few hours getting our hands dirty and he actually had some killer suggestions that we incorporated. He's 6.

I love it when a good build comes together...

Try and keep the IO panel easily accessible. For a general PC there is not a whole lot of need for adjusting memslots etc. But cards and USB and whatnot still tends to get played with a lot.

I have done a few deskmods in my time, and finally just got lazy and built a desk that holds server cases lol.

Patch 07-10-2010 10:41 AM

Bleeding.

That's why this will be on the desk. (It has it's own A/C power supply)

Nice to have the kids throwing in as well! Whats up with that water block...looks out of kilter or something? :)

Patch 07-10-2010 10:53 AM

P55 Classy also has 775 holes that are offset from the 1156 ones. :good:

rickss69 07-10-2010 10:55 AM

Ahh...I'm used to the slotted blocks (spoiled). :taunt:

Patch 07-11-2010 05:11 PM

Fan spin/die cycling.

24 hours later. 2 CPU's (i5 670 and 655K), 3 sets of RAM, 2 PSU's, different hard drives, several GPU's, lots o jumper fiddling, in case or on top. Same thing.

Dead P55 Classy. Now I'm wondering if this thing has been the source of all my i5 670 failures over the last 3 months. :Dizzy:

Now to find a replacement........someone's selling a Foxconn Katana Inferno for $95 shipped. Should prolly nab that for the kid's rig while I ponder whether I'm brave enough to try to RMA this thing. It's been to to the icy depths of Hades and back - and very much looks like it.

FACE 07-11-2010 08:06 PM

I'm sure she can be scrubbed clean enough to pass inspection.... Soap and water + brush FTW :ohcrap:

Witchdoctor 07-12-2010 03:06 AM

Looks nice patch.... sucks the board is wasted ....

Foxconn for 95 sounds like it would be cool ....

Great when the kids get into it, Mine are meh whats the point dad as long as it will run utube and Maple Story .....

Love building stuff myself .....

In for the results when this is done ................

Patch 07-16-2010 07:42 PM

I hate Vista.

I forgot you can't do a clean install with an unformatted hard drive.....grrr. At least I can't. Maybe one of you gurus can.

Kids like the interface though, and I have a spare Vista key. Don't want to buy another 7 key right now.

I'm not taking the hard drive out to format it on another comp, since it's buried and hard to get to behind the radiator/pump. I guess I'll just load XP for now...

Stupid microsoft stupidness.

Edit: Stupid Patch stupidness. The SATA cable had come loose.......

rickss69 07-16-2010 09:26 PM

Why not use Tiny 7? It's free and available here...

Patch 07-16-2010 11:27 PM

Still need a key to use 24/7, no? And I don't want to deal with troubleshooting stuff that won't work on a stripped OS. Especially since the kids like all the extraneous crap like the vista sidebar....

I know you're thinking I'm prematurely calling it stable without a Vantage run.......:headspin:

Still looking for one of my CD's.....

DOM 07-17-2010 04:32 AM

i can upload a file which makes windows Genuine ;)

rickss69 07-17-2010 07:22 AM

No key needed for Tiny 7 and no issues using it I have seen. All it takes is a quick install and try it...cost = zero. :) ( I doubt the kids give a hoot about the bench's or overclock's...me thinks this is really your's. :taunt:)

Have you seen how long it takes a rig to boot at 3.2Ghz? Who has time to sit around waiting for that crap?

Edit: On a side note, I'm enjoying this Katana. Kind of fun to play with something non-ASUS or non-EVGA again. Too bad the latest official BIOS doesn't seem to allow changing the multi on the 655K, unless I'm missing some setting. Maybe I'll hunt for a beta bios.....you know....for the kids.

rickss69 07-17-2010 04:45 PM

I use this on mine... http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...st-review.html

With a small 32GB ssd it is pretty fast.

Patch 07-18-2010 12:04 PM

I'm no artisan. But it matches what I envisioned just fine. :)
