Socket 462 buying questions...
 

so 2 of the people i work with are selling there socket 462 motherbaords and i kinda need one for overclock all that chips i have laying around so here is what they got...

option 1
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe

option 2
Abit NF7
(not sure if is the NF7 OR the NF7-S)

i been reading on the bot and seems like the Abit AN7 is the winner over the Asus..
is there any other recommendation you guys got or should i go with one of those two..

here is the chips i monna be looking at overclocking.. (i monna be taking those things SUBZERO!)
AXDA3000DKV3E <- that's the chip i am really gonna be overclocking (unless i should be overclocking an different one then PLEASE tell me!)
AXDA3000DKV4D <- this is gonna be the chip i monna practice on before i get in to AXDA3000DKV3E
AXDA2600DKV3D <- this is another chip i monna be practice on before i get in to AXDA3000DKV4D
AX1800DMT3C <- this is like the first chip i monna be "practice" on i never REALLY overclocked a 462 chip before.. have no idea how well they handle... if i smoke it i smoked it...
AX1900DMT3C <- this is like the thing i monna be playing with right after AX1800DMT3C

i should have another chip coming on my way.. should be another 3000+

oh yeah and the Abit board may be a little easier for me to get but if the Asus one is better i am sure i can put my hands on it no matter what.. =) :thumbsup:

As with all hardware, especially used hardware, it is a tough call.. You never know which of them will be "the gem" and which will suck. Grab them both if you can and try both out. The trick is to find the one that will reach a higher bus speed on the same chip. In there lies your answer. ;)

which on of those chips are the best of OC under subzero?
cuz i am thinking taking the latest stepping 3000+ the V4D as my main oc chip for the 462 setup but idk cuz i never played with them enough to say anything about it...

well, they seem to net about the same points on the bot. No globals to be had with them, so they are all going to be pretty much equal on the points end of things.

Start with the lowest freq chip to get the feel of the board, then work your way up to the higher grade chips. Keep an eye on the rankings per chip as you bench to give you a guide line of where you need to be on each, and you can't go wrong. :thumbsup:

NF7-S is like one of the best of the best comes to overclocking and hitting cups wise..
and the NF7 is not too bad..

and the Asus one is kinda just like in it's own world.....:thumbdown:

It would be wise to consult Mr Scott on these matters...from my experience it is the hardest overclocking you will ever do. ;)

(just wanna ask... why is that the hardest? that's actuelly what i started with but never got really in to it... i had a soyo board that i can no longer find no more :thumbdown:)

I don't think it's that hard.:D It's just time consuming. It's not like the new stuff where you stroke a couple keys in the bios and you're done. You have to work each chip you OC within there own personality's. They all like different things.
It's mostly in the combination of components you put together. This is where doing your homework pays off. I'll try to condense it a little to get you started.
First, the boards you'll want to look for are AN7, NF7(S), DFI Ultra B, Epox 8RDA. Any of those boards will provide the high FSB you're gonna need. Second, start looking for ram right now. 1 gig or less kits with timings of 2-2-2-x. BH-5 or TCCD chips are what you want to look for. Ram is critical for socket A's because you NEVER, EVER, want to run anything other than a 1:1 ratio. It just kills performance.
Third, a good high performance modded bios for whatever board you wind up with. Fortunately for you, you know somebody with a modded bios library a few hundred deep for most boards on most older platforms. Who, you ask?.......That would be me.;)
Fourth is a tip: Less multi and more FSB is always better. Tighter timings are always better.
Put something together and give it a shot. I'll help you. Rick tried socket A, ask him how it went. It's not as easy as everybody thinks. Definitely more satisfying than my newer platforms.

i got a friend that's got (i think) the NF7-S maybe the AN7 but he said he was really sure that's got an "S" on it...

also how is that Asus board i got listed on there?
is that good?

i am working on the ram right now..
i am looking everywhere in the house for those 2 IC's and i am going to my RICH ASS friend's house sometime this weekend and go on like a scavenger hunt :D he dosn't know much about computers most of my friends don't know much about hardwares at all lol

That Asus board is probably second only to the one's I listed earlier. One of my teamies runs one, and he does pretty well with it. My AN7 or NF7 will blow it out of the water though.

Had some very nice Abit boards in the day .....

They're around. You just have to look for them......and be willing to pay. AN7's and NF7's still go for around $50-$75. DFI Ultra B's are the tough one's to find. They'll go for more than that. They're also the king of the OC'ers for socket A. I personally still own 2 AN7's and 2 NF7's. I used to have more of them than that, but you know how that goes.......trade one for some stuff......blow one up in flames while on DICE....Etc.

Negative. It's an entry level VIA chipset m-ATX board. There's no hope for it.:thumbdown:

what is the difference between the NF7-S and NF7-S2G? which one is the right board?

NF7 or NF7-S, both need to be ver.2. Those are the only NF7's worth looking at.

i gave him $80 for the board and a handle of captain morgan lol :D

Mr. Scott was right about the NF7 or AN7's being able to get by my MB but I have to disagree with "Blowing it out of the water".
I'll let the results speak for themselves. :poke: :D

The A7N8X-E is the same as my 2.0 Deluxe except it has SATA and mine doesn't. True, each board will have it's own ability to OC but I believe a good clocking A7N can hold it's own in most cases when setup correctly plus they tend to be rock-solid too.

In the case of an A7N, it's all about getting it "Just right" and this board is perfect for someone wanting to learn how to OC Socket A's. Then you can take what you've learned with it and apply it to the others for even better results. :good:

turned out the NF7-S board is broken so it's out of the game ='( so now i did get my hands on a A7N8X and mushkin reds for cash 20 he may also give me some kingston ram too how's the A7N8X? i saw on the bot it's really not too bad

I had the AN7 and the A7N deluxe a few years back. ASUS board was flashed with the other bios (I forget which exactly was the high end board) I either had the non deluxe and flashed it to that or had the deluxe and flashed it to something else IIRC

Keep in mind that I have modded bios' for almost any K7 or K8 board worth OC'ing. Hit me up if you have a need. If I don't already have one, I can probably whip something up for you. I'm a pretty fair bios modder.;)
