Anything & Everything Sandybridge

Quote:

The second generation Core

The name of the fastest Sandy Bridge is Core i7 2600K and we can give you an inside in the new naming scheme. First of all you will know that it’s a Sandy Bridge if you see a name with four digits starting with a number two.

Let’s dissect the Core i7 2600K moniker in segments and explain it. Intel Core is the brand of the CPU, i7 is the brand modifier that will help you distinct the features on a different cores. Number two in 2600 is the generation indicator meaning that this is the second generation of Intel’s Core architecture.

The 600 is the SKU numeric digits that will tell you which CPU you are getting and of course once again bigger numbers mean a better CPU.

The suffix K tells you that the CPU is unlocked and the other iterations such as suffix S will tell you that this is a CPU with performance optimised for lifestyle computing and T has Power Optimised Lifestyle whatever that would mean.

Once again, Intel has new chipset, new socket, new names and of course if you want the Sandy Bridge you will have to throw or sell your Nehalem Core i based system and get a new one with a socket that is only one pin shy of its predecessor.

Just as I was saying awhile back, 1365 socket FTL on us 1366 socket mobo holders. :(

Chuchnit 08-24-2010 03:14 AM

its funny because there are more than one pin in 1366 that is literally there for nothing. Just a money grab.

karmakazi 08-24-2010 05:14 AM

wow thats a total bs move by intel... now I think Ill just hold onto my classy and skip getting the R3E

Witchdoctor 08-24-2010 01:07 PM

I heard that...

Think I am done investing into 1366 .... may grab a cheap 930 since this 960 I just grabbed is a total POS ....

But you have to hand it to Intel ...

They are holding all the cards and untill the AMD camp can bring the mojo

The new Intel boards will fly off the shelves I am sure .....

It will represent the only viable option for Global domination (Evil Laugh)

MaadDaawg 08-24-2010 01:39 PM

What about the rumors that intel plans on retarding the Sandy Bridge so it can't run as fast as it's physically capable of?

Witchdoctor 08-24-2010 02:25 PM

That would be a marketing disater and finacial suicide IMO

AMD would have the upper hand for sure ....

I doubt Intel would be that stupid , as we are not where the majority is, as far as overall sales, but we do represent a market share and dominate their Extreme addition sales ....

Its pretty retarded at the moment but the mobo manufs are working to un-leash that performance, fear not, it will be released! :good:

thebanik 08-25-2010 12:22 AM

Though they are the performance leader but Intel is evil, :P

Yup the inital design of the X58 had safety features too to prevent it from passing the 130TDP envelope. I think we can all see that was a bust :)

Top Sandy Bridge works at 3.4GHz

Core i7 2600K with turbo to 3.8GHz
The top Core i7 2000 series, the one that we expect in Q1 2011 is going to work at 3.4GHz. The official name is Core i7 2600K and this quad-core CPU runs at 3.4GHz and boasts eight threads. The K stands for unlocked CPU, something that many overclockers plan to warmly welcome and for less experienced users Turbo 2 will overclock the core to 3.8GHz.

Turbo 2 can overclock a single core, two cores, or all four cores, depending on the thermals and load in any given moment. The memory of support is DDR3 1066 and 1333 and unofficially it will support even higher clocked memory. Sandy Bridge supports two-channel memory. As we said yesterday, its graphics run at 850MHz native clock and 1350MHz with the help of Turbo 2. Intel calls this Dynamic frequency.

The TDP is 95W and the CPU needs 6 series chipset and socket LGA1155 motherboard.

Only Core i7 Sandy Bridge has eight threads

Core i3 only two
The new thing about the second Core generation codenamed Sandy Bridge is that only the top branded CPUs will have feature hyperthreading.

Hypertreds don’t do that much but they do show you that you have „eight cores“ in Windows task manager and you will only see eight threads with top Core i7 CPUs.

Core i5 CPUs will be a native quad-core CPUs but they won’t support hyperthreading. This will be exclusively reserved for Core i7 2000 series parts. Core i3 native dual-cores will only support two treads which is step down from current Core i3 CPUs that feature two cores and support four threads.

The trend of lack of Turbo support in Core i3 generation will continue with new Sandy Bridge based Core i3 2000 series CPUs.

This is the branding and performance distinction that Intel wants to make clearer in 2011 as most people got confused with Core i branding, as Core i5 and Core i7 were overlapping in many performance and feature characteristics. Now the distinction should be more clear, but it looks to us that in most cases you will get less for the same money.

God I wonder how much they will rip us for that 8 core monster!!!

Splave 08-26-2010 03:53 AM

wow could be some epic wprime quads

Kal-EL 08-26-2010 03:57 AM

20mb L3 cache is just retarded, all those calculations instructions occurring on the cpu before reaching out for room.

DrNip 08-30-2010 11:08 AM

Good stuff here.

anand fails to talk about the little stuff...

but heck this i5-2400 is almost as good as the 980x.....sheesh 200$ is nice...a toy to play with once oc is good with the k series...

DrNip 11-07-2010 04:57 AM

Hmmmm, don't know what to think of this. Are they selling ES Sandybridge systems already or what?

Man take a look at the results with this 2600k. Hoping I have enough saved by the time it drops. Would hate to be on the sidelines when this drops. :(

Kal-EL 11-14-2010 05:14 PM

Theres a bunch of es chips in the wild right now, plenty. A couple euro-friends have a bunch in circulation and for sale.

Neuromancer 11-14-2010 05:52 PM

I would rather see 25x200 :)

Hondacity 11-16-2010 12:50 PM

i can wait till jan5 :D

DrNip 11-16-2010 02:18 PM

I wonder if the 2600k will be launched that day or if we'll have to wait for it a month or two down the line?

Splave 11-17-2010 04:04 AM

I cant wait for sandy

crazy... Imagine proper XP/03 server with tweaks. It's kinda scary how fast SB is looking. They better really have something special with socket 2011 to make it worth buying.

Hondacity 11-19-2010 07:04 AM

2011 is quad channel ddr3....imagine how much bandwidth that is....

i hope 2600k is under 800$

intel for sure is doing a 580gtx move on amd............

amd will introduce the bullozer...next year....but intel like nvidia made a gorilla move:D

GeorgeStorm 11-19-2010 07:08 AM

Is that that amazing? (I know very little about 32M)
Other runs at that kinda time are 5.2-3 Not that much of a clockspeed difference? :/

Considering the ram MHZ, timings and the fact that is was ran on a win7 install obviously used to run a ton of other 2d/3d benches..... yes I would call it amazing.

Hondacity 11-19-2010 07:21 AM

chuch show georgie the computation ...i forget :(

Chuchnit 11-19-2010 07:27 AM

Well here is Windwithme's run on the Biostar. Looks like Win7 with aero even enabled.

6m 41.467s - so convert that into seconds which is 401.467. Then multiply that by the CPU mhz which is 5120mhz.

401.467 * 5120 = 2055511

Basically that is blazing fast. That is amazing efficiency on X58 triple channel with hypers. Keep in mind when I say amazing on X58, I mean on XP or server03 fully tweaked out. This is just on win7 with aero enabled. Sub 2mil eff should be pie on some good hypers and proper OS.

2600k Review:

rickss69 11-24-2010 03:36 AM

Other than benchmarks, what will these really be of benefit to one compared to what we now have?

Chuchnit 11-24-2010 03:44 AM

Native sata III, heavy increase in IPC imo, lower power, maybe more cpu mhz.....

rickss69 11-24-2010 04:10 AM

No, I mean in real life utilization...will one be able to game, surf, ect. any better than we now do? Heck, if nothing ever improved from what we have now I would still be satisfied... :taunt:

Chuchnit 11-24-2010 04:22 AM

Probably not much I don't think. Personally I think computers are so fast vs software that the only reason to buy new stuff is if you happen to be in the market for a new rig or benching. I just don't see a new cpu/mobo giving you a noticeable difference. Money could be better spent on ssd's or video cards.

Witchdoctor 11-24-2010 05:04 AM

I think game play will be like being in a movie one day ..... it is already getting close to that.

Hope Crysis 2 pushes the envelope ..... many new titles, it does not seem like they are really going after it ...

I'm buying Crysis 2 regardless if the game sucks or not. I'll buy for the sole fact that they are trying to push the envelope of PC gaming.

Back on topic, Sadly there are only a few new titles that really utilize more than two cores. This is where SB will shine in these games. I think when more and more games come out that support quads and above the advantage is taken away. Just like in the little review that was posted. BFBC2 taxes 4 cores and by doing that SB is no better than current 45nm s1156 quads.

Neuromancer 11-24-2010 06:31 AM

HW development begets software development.

Unfortunately HW Development also begets sloppy code writers that can make up for a lack of sophistication in their software by throwing straight MHz at it. A la Java and Flash based apps. But some games as well.

Honestly there really is no need to upgrade yet, but who can resist!! A good AM3/X58 setup is smokin right now :) I am sure P55 falls in there somewhere as well.
