CM Scout Gamer

4 Attachment(s)
Following in DrNip's footsteps with a slight twist. I have been messing with the 1090T Thuban for awhile in my game rig and just have not been satisfied with it so I have decided to venture in another direction.

I will take the recently wounded/revived 980X and install it in the Scout case to become the 24/7/Gamer. Since it appears I will be the permanent owner of this chip with no hope of rma imaginable, she will be put out to pasture in this rig with hopes she will continue to function in a less stressfull setting. I fear putting to much voltage to it benchmarking would lead to it's final demise. The OCA contest currently running will be her last hurrah...she has served me well. ;)

Parts to be used will be updated as I move along :

CM Scout mid-tower
Intel 980X
Evga X58 SLI Micro mb
WD 1TB hdd
SuperTalent 32GB ssd
Silverstone HDDBoost
Corsair HX1000w psu
LiteOn DVD burner
Saaphire 5870

I may go with the stock 980X hsf on this one.
For memory I am hopeful to win these GSkill's soon... http://www.benchtec.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=6951

build looking great, as far as winning memory is concerned I will say, dont count your chickens before they are hatched, simply because in this case it will hurt to lose. Ofcourse you should win because of the undying dedication in both the comps. but what can I do I am a pessimist(but I consider it as a positive trait, :P)

rickss69 09-09-2010 12:06 AM

Nothing is counted yet brother...key word was "hopeful". ;) (the Fat Lady has yet to sing)

DrNip 09-09-2010 12:37 AM

That HDDBoost is slick Kal - Everytime I have used it in a pc it has outperformed any ssd alone in boot times and generally just makes everything snappier in everyday use. :good: http://www.overclockaholics.com/foru...ead.php?t=3083

Witchdoctor 09-09-2010 06:16 AM

HD boost ???

link a brother up ..... that is how you are getting those insane restart times ......

Here ya go WD... http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...st-review.html

Neuromancer 09-09-2010 06:36 AM

Interesting. I assumed that the only reason I was impressed with the Vertex2 was because of write speeds. (I have had 250MB/s read drives before). Might have to look into that a little for upgrading old POS systems.

Build looks pretty incredible for SFF. The 980X pretty cool running at stock?

rickss69 09-09-2010 06:43 AM

It is great for older systems Neuro - I use a cheaper SuperTalent 32GB with the HDDBoost.

The 980X is pretty cool running overall...much like the i3/i5 chips are.

DOM 09-09-2010 06:45 AM

i ran 4ghz on mt stock cooler

rickss69 09-09-2010 06:50 AM

10-4 DOM - I will probably run close to default settings on this one...I have noticed no gains to be had overclocking the cpu for online gaming anyway. :good:

Chuchnit 09-09-2010 07:20 AM

Sounds like a slick build you are gonna have Rick. Care to share your frustrations with AMD for a gaming platform? Was there a noticable performance difference? Stock clocks or overclocked?

rickss69 09-09-2010 07:41 AM

Probably a combination of things Chuch. The Thuban is presently sitting in a ASUS Crosshair III Formula with a Saaphire 5870...it just seems overall sluggish compared to recent Intel builds. Hard to pinpoint really, but very annoying to me. The snappiest rig to date for me has been the i5 670 coupled with a Gigabyte or MSI mb.

Interesting. I built my grandparents a little AMD dual core rig last Christmas. To this day I think it feels snappier than any X58 rig I've put together. Now just yesterday I put the in-laws a P55 together and that focker was snappy all around. I still want to build me an AMD daily gaymer rig. Just to be different I guess.

rickss69 09-09-2010 07:55 AM

I think it is probably just a quirky combination of parts that give it that feel. On the other hand every i3/i5 rig has been outstanding in every way. Who knows, this 980X may be the biggest dud of them all lol.

Neuromancer 09-09-2010 08:00 AM

Sounds interesting. As snappy as X58 feels, I am running a AthII 240 right in a HP till my CHIII comes back. IMC is everything!

It is WAY snappier than my X58

(hmm well no... the X58 at 4.5 GHz 6-6-6 ram at 1740MHz and the OCZ veretxII does put up a good fight....)

rickss69 09-09-2010 08:05 AM

Is "snappy" to become the next buzz word in the pc world? Hahaha! I'm a big fan of snappy I am... :D

Yah I meant stock clocks. I gaymed on my classy for a month or so last fall. Of course when I was cruising at 4.35ghz for a daily clock it felt a little faster than the AMD rig. There is one big difference though. AMD rig is running Win7 and I was running vista.

rickss69 09-09-2010 08:08 AM

I'm really considering going back to XP for this. Can anyone give me cons as to why I should not?

Neuromancer 09-09-2010 08:18 AM

cuz xp turns to poo every few months?

rickss69 09-09-2010 08:58 AM

Just sick of the constant reactivate messages after a hardware change...

Yeah, just validate first and block the hotfix that detects them.
