When cash is short, how good is the Asus Rampage III Extreme vs the Classy 4-Way?

Hey.

Normally I would choose the EVGA Classified 4-way any day infront of the Re3. But when cash is short, I can't afford the 4-way, but the RE3 is in reach.

I've read a lot of different stories about the RE3, but some suff seems to bad and some seems to be really good. But that is how people are, we like different stuff.

I like the BIOS EVGA uses, they're really good, not to big fan of AIM, but they also have a lot of good options, and it's probably fun to try something new. I've been owning a E760 and E762 before.

First thing you probably want to do with the RE3 is to change TIM on the chipset heatsinks.

So tell me how good/bad is this RE3?

Regards Kriz

Never had a R3E so hard for me to help

From the numbers the guys are putting up with them it seems they have WIN written all over them .... at least on LN2

Kal-EL 09-09-2010 04:02 AM

I prefer the EVGA bios myself and I notice clock for clock the E762 appears quicker on the 2D side, not sure on the 3D side cuz its damned near impossible to find a decent 980x.

Peg me an EVGA guy but I'm starting to familirize myself with the RE3 and latest bios now.

Thanks for your opinions Witchdoctor and Kal.

I'm also a dedicated EVGA fan, but the RE3 is freaking cheap and I can't really afford the 4-way.

And it's probably nice to try something els once in a while too.

Big sale on 762 - the bastards :P

RomDominance 09-09-2010 05:08 AM

Hey Kriz, I sold my 762 and my F batch 980x for a grand to a friend. I have completely made the switch to the R3E and would own two, if Dentlord hadn't purchased the one I won at Quakecon. I love em bro.

short cash? don't even bother with a 1366 unless you can get a 980x fallen from the back of a truck :)

1156 will give you allot of options with cheaper cpus that clock like nuts.

 for global

the 920 is a hardware whore though and a decent 3D chip ....

I agree though, I am also looking at 1156 if I can't muster a win in the foru2doln2 contest

cough... new drive and memory inbound ..... cough

I have all other parts for my setup. I don't require to compete at top level. I like overclocking, I got a nice W3520 laying here on my desk.

There will be several of opportunity of getting better cpu's later on.

So I'm thinking about picking up the RE3, since its ALOT cheaper than the 4way.

I got this parts for my new setup:
W3520, think the former owner did 4.8ghz vantage on air, so it should be decent.
AX850
Asus GTX 295 dual pcb
Dom GTs 2Ghz CL8

I dont have a decent comp, this shit will give me A lot of fun dudes:D

I have had terrible luck so far with the ASUS boards bios. Guess I am so familiar with the EVGA's I have a mind block lol. That link that MD put up for the Classified is a great deal...why are you considering the four-way?
If you can wait just a bit I will let you know how the Evga X58 SLI micro performs at $199... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813188051

Shoot Kris, I just sold my classy 4 way super cheap.

I like the R3E better. ROG connect sure beats evbot clocking.

Kriztoffer 09-09-2010 07:20 AM

I'll order a RE3 tonight:)

DANG... Wish I had the money. Dropping $200 on a Gemini pot this week though.

Only way I could afford a 980X is if I am the one that made it "fall off the truck" lol!!!

I made the switch from the Classy to the R3E as well and love this board. Very forgiving board and always willing to reboot. YES the BIOS is something to get used to but after a little play time you get the hang. As already stated ROG connect is the shizzle and I liked the R3E so much I got the P55 Maximus Formula as well for some fun. Both board rock solid on my end!

For ROG connect you need a laptop, netbook or a iPhone or something like that and there is a software you install on it. So basically you can clock it with that.
