What cooler for air?

Which one have y'all found to be the best of the best for benching on air?

Kal-EL 04-11-2009 04:30 PM

These two seem to be the top of the roost when it comes to ari cooling:

and

MEGAHALEM

TRUE

I have the True Ultra extreme 120, the standard version and it cooled the same if not better than my water setup. The copper one is better but harder to find and more expensive.

Jeffro64 04-11-2009 05:11 PM

I like that true copper.... I guess the push pull fans would help that much more?

Thats what they say. I've never used it but I've read over and over how well it performs. I don't think you can go wrong with it. The magahalem is starting to see reviews where its a couple degrees cooler than the TRUE but the jury is still out.

Jeffro64 04-11-2009 05:25 PM

I was looking at the optional fan mount and it said something about it can be used for a push pull... but the way it looks like it hooks up it doesn't look like that would be possible. But they aren't the best pics.

Too bad you can't find one anywhere.

DrNip 04-12-2009 03:12 AM

Here are some tests done on various coolers. One site the Megahalem wins but the other the TRUE wins.

Jeffro64 04-12-2009 04:50 AM

Interesting reads.... Looks like they are both very good coolers for sure. I'll probably get the TRUE because I can't find the Megahalem instock anywhere LOL!

DrNip 04-12-2009 04:59 AM

I like the bolt down kit way more for the Megahalem than the TRUE. The TRUE is kinda hard to do and you end up sliding the cooler around on the CPU which at times has gotten my paste everywhere.

Jeffro64 04-12-2009 05:16 AM

Is it that hard out of a case... I mean like on a bench? I wonder how long the Megahalem will be out of stock everywhere.

Jeffro64 04-16-2009 07:42 AM

ORDERED TODAY!!! It will come lapped and ready to go with two panaflo fans!:D

DrNip 04-16-2009 08:29 AM

I seen they are in stock in two places, FrozenCPU and Performance PC's. Performance PC has them for $59.99 while FrozenCPU has them for $69.99. But FrozenCPU has the spare fan clips that you will need unlike everyone else. Make sure you get the 38mm fan clips as there is a difference between them and the ones that come with the cooler which are for 25mm fans.

Jeffro64 04-16-2009 09:02 AM

Yeah... I called CrazyPC to ask when they would have them back instock and they just so happened to have ONE but they had pulled it off the site until more came in. I did get the 38mm clips to go with those fans and got the lapping option.

My tech station just arrived!!! :D

Jeffro64 04-21-2009 07:21 PM

The Megahalem arrived today a day early.... Looks like it will get the job done for air!

Cool Jeffro, when you get time, start another thread and share some pics with the gang.

Jeffro64 04-22-2009 04:17 AM

I plan on bro....once I get things in i'll start a thread and post pics from the begining of the build.

Kal-EL 04-22-2009 07:05 AM

That thing is gonna look mean and retarded like my brother.

Jeffro64 04-22-2009 11:19 AM

I just hope I don't have any of the nightmares Nip has had.

I doubt you will as in my case it is more rare than normal for it to happen. I want to get that air cooler but it is wider than the TRUE and my RAM sits so high. I can barley fit the TRUE with a 38mm fan on mine. That is with no fan guard too which I'm not found of as I see my knuckles hittin the blade. I ordered some 25mm fans and I will have to see the clearance as I think 25mm fans and the mega-whatever cooler will be the same as my TRUE and 38mm.

Jeffro64 04-23-2009 04:59 AM

That might just work... it looks like a hell of a cooler! Too bad they don't have one or brackets for AMD.

Jeffro64 05-21-2009 07:29 AM

Well.... I ordered a kit to be able to use my Megahalem on my socket AM3 and the tracking shows delivered yesterday but I had no package. I guess if it don't show today i'll have to order another.

DrNip 05-21-2009 09:26 AM

WTF man. Who was the carrier?

Jeffro64 05-21-2009 10:54 AM

USPS..... It showed up today, I bet he scanned it early while at the boxes down the street yesterday and then forgot to drop it off.

Now maybe i'll get some lower temps outta this baby!! :D

Kal-EL 05-21-2009 12:04 PM

PICs or Vaporware!!!!!!!! :D

Jeffro64 05-21-2009 12:13 PM

Gonna have to wait..... Dammit, it seems when Prolimatech made this kit they neglected to measure. The CPU socket is in the way of letting the mount line up with the holes on the backplate.:argh:

wtf!!   :argh:

Jeffro64 05-21-2009 12:24 PM

I know... i'm pissed! I've emailed them being that they don't supply a phone number to call them. So I guess i'll hurry up and wait some more.

Sounds kinda like S.W.A.T. tactics "Hurry UP! & wait" :ash1:

Jeffro64 05-21-2009 12:37 PM

Think i'll head up to Home Depot and see if I can find a file.... That should do the trick.

Jeffro64 05-21-2009 05:41 PM

Well.... Got it done with a dremmel tool and the Megahalem is now attached. Gotta say it's not as good as I thought it would be.

Kal-EL 05-21-2009 08:15 PM

Is it the temps or the failed factory specs?

Jeffro64 05-22-2009 04:24 AM

The temps.... I was able to lower the volts a bit and get them down some but it's not much better than the stock cooler I had on there. I could only get one fan on it because it would take out the first two ram slots if I tried to use two fans LOL. I don't know why these people don't think of that and make these things a little taller, I mean I know they gotta fit into a case for most applications.... but make a taller one for us guys that aren't using a case! :D

I'm sitting at 3.8ghz now... got it to boot at 3.9 but it wasn't stable at all so i'm still playing around with settings I know nothing about. Looks kinda grim for anything higher though.

Kal-EL 05-22-2009 07:22 AM

Don't lose faith brother, she's just playing hard to get right now, take ur time, get to know her a little bit more, slip something in her drink then bang her at 4.2ghz :rofl

Jeffro64 05-22-2009 07:31 AM

I'm trying but until I know what all the settings do and understand them it's futile.

Kal-EL 05-22-2009 07:47 AM

Only thing I can suggest is scouring google, reviews, forums for clues to the AMD bios. Beyond that its old fashioned science test and log.

Jeffro64 05-22-2009 08:01 AM

Yeah....just not much out there yet. And I can change settings but as far as what they actually do sometimes it's not that obvious to be able to log anything, and sometimes I can see what it does either in performance or CPUz. It's a crap shoot LOL!! :D

When I started on the Rex I was lost too. Granted I understood the bios better than the pics you posted but still... I used prime95, super pi, and 2k6 for testing. I would only change one thing at a time. For example with clock skews for the nb. When I was getting close to 600fsb, I was using super pi and prime for testing. I would change the skews one level at a time, reboot and test. First thing I did was run super pi 1m since it's very sensitive to your stability. Sometimes you will be a little faster by upping vcore and making the cpu mroe stable. Of course run it over 5 or 6 times to get a clear result.

Then I would run prime95 small fft for a few minutes and then blend for a few. This is really where you find stability. Super pi 1m was just a quick speed/stability test. If I failed a thread in prime, I would write down how long it took to fail and what core. If it lasted longer than the last time I ran prime, I changed the clock skews more. If it failed at the same place, I would go back to where I started before trying skews. Make sense?

Jeffro64 05-22-2009 10:54 AM

Yeppers.... that's pretty much what i've been doing, but I fear that until I get some extreme cooling on this bad boy i've gone about as far as I can go.
