Installing XP with no cd drive?
I tried copying the cd onto my flash drive, but that doesn't seem to work. I didn't really want to have to d/l XP.
Help please? Edit by Kal: |
here ya go, but I highly recommend you downloading the Tiny Rev9 version of XP before doing this.
http://www.jcmiras.net/surge/p96.htm |
Thanks.
I already decided to download the Black Edition and it's 20% done already.\ Where do I get this Tiny rev9 you mentioned? And is it all streamlined for benching or something because that is what I really want. nevermind...Googled it. |
What about rev 10...or platinum edition of Tiny XP? Those are easily attainable.
Rev 10 it is. |
Visit our Team FTP thread in the Sactum ;)

See post #5....;)
|
I don't see Tiny XP there.
|
It's under OCA_OS images. Dbl click and go into my folder (rickss69).
|
I found it exactly where you said, only right before you said it. Sorry for being so blind, or not looking hard enough.
|
But what am I going to do with this iso that I couldn't do with the other?

Bootsect was the problem, or I am doing something wrong I think.......I didn't even get to the iso yet.
I'm trying to make this flash drive bootable to xp installation. My head is about spinning right now.....this shit gets me frustrated, but on a happier note the coolant is staying right @ -30 C. I appreciate the help Rick:thumbsup: What exactly do YOU do with the iso? I am d/l rev 9 now. |
Sorry, but I know nothing of usb or flash drives. If you manage to get that far the install should be quick once you set the boot order in bios. I usually just install #1 option on the list with all the drivers and explorer.

Thanks bro. I actually figured out the whole problem though. It's always something......in the instructions of what to type in the command prompt it does not tell you to type a colon after the drive letter.
Maybe I should just know that, but even so I was following the instructions so WTF? It still won't work with the rev 10 I d/l off PB though. So I'm just waiting for the rev 9 from OCA FTP to be done. Thanks for the help brothers. Until next time..................:cool3: |
For some reason the d/l stopped @ 429/700 MB? Now I have to spend like 2-3 more hours waiting for it...great.
All day to do a xp install. |
Anyways...has anyone done a TinyXP install without an optical drive? I'm pulling my hair out here guys.:Dizzy:
|
I'm not no Fucktard ok:laughing:
I follow these directions http://www.ocia.net/articles/xpflashdrive/page1.shtml and when i get to the point where I have to navigate to the folder where I copied the windows files, it tells me there are no installation files found there. I checked that I copied the contents of the iso I wanted to that folder. :keeporder: I am now very frustrated, but more determined than ever to win this battle. Should I just install XP and then strip it down? It might be faster. |
Yeah a lot of the guides people follow assume to many things... If that guide does not work try another.
I have been using a USB DVDROM for the last few months.. works great :) Just plug it in when I need it :) |
I don't see how tinyxp installs even with a cd...it contains no setup files. I can't believe there have not been more people that wanted to install it with a flash drive.
I've spent the whole day and gotten absolutely nowhere. I install 7 from a flash drive np. |

It's slow.. its a 4x dvd rom I think? Dont matter to me was a freebie... and there are tools to turn USB sticks into virtual floppies, CDroms, or boot drives...
TBH its not any slower than the 8X IDE dvdROM I have... (all my DVDRWs are in "working PCs" LOL) Im going to be moving to all USB sticks soon though I think... Going to figure out how to turn this 16GB USB3 stick into a multi OS installation tool :) |
the bottle neck is the usb..even a usb stick is a bottle neck....sata cables are 100x faster... i just got a freebie image manager i'll practice doing images instead of iso's

I am thinking of turning my corsair nova series into an IFD drive :) USB3 for installing... SATA2 for imaging... (IFD does not like imaging to USB drives... imaging to an esata though... perfect :) ) Might just get one of those 320GB seagate drives that does 160/140 Sustained transfers too and try that out... thats a LOT of TBI files :) I dunno, lot to read up on... |
Well I wasted 16 hours yesterday trying to get TinyXP installed from a Flash Drive. Awesome. I even tried using my legal copy of XP pro.
I don't know what the problem or problems are, but after that many unsuccessful attempts I'm about to say screw XP and benchmarking. One big problem is no "windows source files" included in TinyXP....if you guys can install it from an optical drive I should be able to make a virtual drive containing it and copy it to the flash drive. Which I am able to do, but it's not booting for numerous reasons....missing hal.dll so it tells you to use the debug codes if you get that error, but the debug codes don't work either. I get hardware configuration problem when I try debug codes. Ughhhh I don't even really want to talk about it anymore. I just want the answer. I have a freshly formatted HD, do I need to pre-partition it? Doesn't windows installer have that function? |

Don't have any sata optical drives, or usb either.

It makes no sense that I actually need one though.

i have 3 sata-dvd drives.... installs from sata to ssd takes only 5 minutes...xp or 7.
|
Well I can't figure out how to get it to install from a flash drive. WinToFlash works, but when I boot up from the USB to install xp I get "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error, so it tells me to try this list of debug codes and none of them work. I know the HD works. It still booted the old OS(7) yesterday.
I read that the hal.dll has to do with the # of the HD, and # of the partition being incorrect in boot.ini. I have tried editing in different values other than the default debug codes and I just can't figure it out. I only have the USB drive and the Sata drive installed, the sata is freshly formatted so it has to be the 1st partition and it must be the 1st or 2nd drive. I've tried all logical values(0,1&2) in each place. I can see a fun night ahead trying to figure this out. |
did you watch the link i provided?
|
Yes I tried that. That's where I got wintoflash. Regardless of how I have tried it the end result is that the windows xp source files needed for installation are not being found no matter what tinyxp I have used, or which method.
I just tried the 1st suggestion again also rickss69. I gtg. I'll be back later. Thanks for all the suggestions. |

just tossing tid bits your way. I have this working right now on a USB so I'll put together a quick and dirty how to for you and save you some hair loss :) |
This is the procedure I use to make a flash drive bootable.
3oh6 posted this at EVGA forums for flashing the bios. http://www.evga.com/forumsarchive/tm.asp?m=671353 I've used it numerous times with no problems. |
