REX gurus GTF in here!!

I need some help hitting 600+ fsb on the rex ...

I have 2 e8600 and both top out at exactly the same 5.75ghz because I cant get the bus speed higher.

Any key voltages or settings that I should know about?

Is it absolutely necessary to freeze the nb?

Any help is appreciated

DrNip 09-24-2010 03:14 AM

Trying to remember but have you jacked with the gtlv lanes? I know tweaking those helped me. I never took it over 6 ghz so dunno about freezing the nb though I have seen many do this. Can you post up some of the settings you are using?

IIRC my board hits 600FSB with most settings to auto multi set to 7 play with NB volts and Vcore and possibly VTT. Also I found with 2 sticks of 2GB ram my board would max about the same as yours. 1 stick 1GB ram and 600 - 615FSB is not much a problem.

Oh lord, back into the world of 775 GTL lol!! I will get some settings in here once I get it up and running later. Just trying to better prepare as last time on 775 was a complete fail.

Ill try one stick, was using 2x1gb thanks.

DrNip 09-24-2010 03:46 AM

I'm fixing to be back down that street too next week when the Black Opps arrives. Kinda gotten spoiled on overclocking with the core iX platforms. :Dizzy:

I can only imagine if you are wanting to get upwards of 6.5 GHZ that will require alot of NB volts and might require a pot. Then again I might just be full of it as I have never been that high. Good luck.

Dentlord 09-24-2010 03:48 AM

I HATE not having ROG connect or an evbot .... clocking in windows ftl!

I didnt get a working lcd poster with this board either.

DrNip 09-24-2010 04:03 AM

$17 shipped FTW!!!!

Dentlord 09-24-2010 04:07 AM

Sweet Nip thanks :)

What about mem strap, what is best for high fsb ??

Ahh superSplave to the rescue!!

/me gets his reading glasses ...

Gunslinger 09-24-2010 04:14 AM

600 on aircooling should be pretty easy with everything on auto, I wouldn't freeze the NB, but instead use a little watercooling.

Chuchnit 09-24-2010 04:16 AM

Dent I had the best luck on the 333 strap with my REX that I bought off of drnip. 266 is nice but I had issues with it running tight PL and high bus speed with it. Freezing the NB can gain you some fsb AND maybe run tighter PL. I can't remember all the volts but I think I was at 1.4-1.45v VTT, 1.7v-ish on NB, GTL's -40 -40, PLL 1.7v-ish and that took me all the way to 638-640fsb. I think I was 220+ benchable, but I was only on dice so I hit the limit for the temps. Don't forget your NB clock skew and CPU clock skew. I think at super high fsb I was around 400/200 or the other way around; I can't remember the order. Once you peg that out start playing with the clock delays on each rank and channel. Those are in the advanced memory settings.

Wow good stuff there Chuch, thanks!

Seems I was way low on the vnb, and need to delve into the gtls

DrNip 09-24-2010 04:24 AM

Yeah you gots to put a little more work into that there setup of yours! lol It's a challenge but rewarding in the end.

Ya unless you get a really awesome board you are prolly going to have to run 1.8v+ NB to stabilize it for 3d. Remember X48 chipset has to handle the fsb, pci lane traffic amongst other things. It has a little more stress that X58 platform.

DrNip 09-24-2010 04:29 AM

You know chuchnit, I have sold much of hardware in my life time and selling you that mobo takes the #1 spot in hardware sell regret. Was still regretting it this week when I couldn't find one for sale and had to settle for a Black Opps. I'll get over it one day just not today, lol. :confused4:

Well just so you know, I kick my arse almost daily for letting it go myself. By far my favorite board to overclock ever.

Splave 09-24-2010 04:36 AM

DUKIE BOUGHT MINE :( +2 to regret

DrNip 09-24-2010 04:37 AM

Well I feel better that there are others out there like me. We need a support group! lol

Word of advice Joey, don't let that girl go. You'll regret it!

Gunslinger 09-24-2010 05:51 AM

Check the various F/S markets closely this weekend you may see something to mend that broken heart. ;)

Oh yeah! I guess I have to look out as well! BTW: I always focus on the NB volts which I run on water and the CPU skew can give you a gain as well. From 0-200 you will need to try what your CPU likes. NB volts i tried 1.5-1.9V :good:

BTW: there was a one of them for sale 2 weeks ago on eBay and it went for $560. I said this is fucking crazy and didn't buy it.

Dentlord 09-24-2010 07:04 AM

Which ram slots, blue or white??

Jesus 1.8v+ on nb :o

Chuchnit 09-24-2010 07:11 AM

Dent, use the slots farthest away. I think those are the white ones.

these settings i use to boot at 630 fsb
if you still have problems with your mobo and don't get your ram above 1600+ whatever strap you use the you have a bad-strap mobo...

What is the best BIOS for REX + e8600?

Gunslinger 09-24-2010 08:22 AM

1201 ?

Hondacity 09-24-2010 08:34 AM

wow super info...i love this forum :D

Well that was a couple hours of endless fail ....

I got into windows a total of ONE time ... and bsod within seconds.

Mostly just no post, cycle to defaults, try something else, no post, cycle to defaults, no post ..............

and that was as low as 550fsb.

Looks like I got a stinker REX, and pretty much useless since any boints to be had with e8600 are over 6ghz.

What strap, divider and PL were you running? On 775 I always started on like PL10-12 and sorted everything else out first. Then tightened it up. My old board hated certain memory dividers too. IIRC, all I could run at high fsb was the 333/5:8.......... I think thats the divider. It was the next to highest memory mhz in bios on the 333 strap. Yours may hate all of the 333 and love 266 strap. Try it out.

where are you getting your black ops from man?
i been wanting to get one of those for a while now..
dosn't it comes with like a pot on the nb? :D

Dentlord 09-24-2010 10:40 AM

Chuch to the rescue ... PL loosened to 12 and it got me booting into windows @ 575 ... at least I have something to start with now.

It likes the 400 strap, wont post with anything else actually.

This is all on phase btw, trying to get settings for 620 or so so I can go for 10 multi under ln2.

GeorgeStorm 09-24-2010 11:12 AM

Slightly off topic, how much does the PL affect benches (2D)
Just wondering cos when I've taken my board high (550+) the PL has been on auto methinks, so no idea how high/low :/

YES 400 was the best in my case as well.

Dentlord 09-24-2010 11:22 AM

Well I discovered one of my problems .... I had almost zero contact between my evap and cpu LOL.

Got the cpu overtemp warning in bios once and decided to check out the mount, which was horrid! I oriented the clamshell the wrong way and caps were holding it up off the cpu. Lucky I was only testing at low speed / cpu voltage.

It was booting windows at 590fsb before that though, so I am finally on the right track.

Splave 09-24-2010 11:25 AM

god I hate that, did it with the lightning the other day lol

HITandRUN 09-24-2010 11:35 AM

Yeah happened to me before as well. Glad you are on the right track again! Give her hell!
