Anything & Everything 5XX Series GPU's

And let the fun begin. 20% faster than the GTX480. I would like to see that!

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 Reference Design Graphics Card Pictured
Here are the first pictures of what is touted to be the GeForce GTX 580 reference design graphics card by NVIDIA, by sections of the Chinese media. There are some interesting inferences that can be drawn just by the looks of the card. To begin with the cooler bears an uncanny resemblance to one of the earliest design iterations of the GeForce GTX 480 (pictured here and here). In its final iteration, NVIDIA gave the GTX 480 a more massive cooler, perhaps to keep up with its finalized clock speeds. If the design of the GTX 580 cooler is anything to go by, it means that either NVIDIA refined the GF100 architecture in the GF110 (on which GTX 580 is based) a great deal, increasing performance per Watt; or that since GTX 580 is in its development stage, its final version could look different. GeForce GTX 580 is being designed as a counter to AMD's Radeon HD 6900 series single-GPU graphics cards that are based on the new Cayman graphics core, which is slated for release in late November. It is expected to be 20% faster than the GTX 480.

Better, improved, hot and fast
We came across some interesting information regarding Nvidia's response to Cayman. The new chip from Nvidia, codenamed GF110 is going to launch in November, most likely before Cayman. AMD set its launch date around November 20 and Nvidia is likely to launch the GF110 a bit earlier.

It is not only that the chip will have more than 480 cores, we dare not to say 512, but all these cores will be improved. Nvidia had more than a year to work on this mid-life kicker, something that can compete AMD's Cayman and could likely end up as the fastest GPU on the market.

First reports indicate that it will get available for around $499 but this will very much depend on Cayman performance and pricing.

The cards are in production as we speak, almost ready to ship at launch. Now its all a matter of politics and deciding when to launch them. As the winter in the northern hemisphere draws near the Cayman and the GF110 will come in quite handy, as both will generate enough heat to keep gamers cozy at sub-zero temperatures.

When either Furmark or OCCT are detected running by the driver, three sensors measure the inrush current and voltage on all 12 V lines (PCI-E slot, 6-pin, 8-pin) to calculate power. As soon as the power draw exceeds a predefined limit, the card will automatically clock down and restore clocks as soon as the overcurrent situation has gone away. NVIDIA emphasizes this is to avoid damage to cards or motherboards from these stress testing applications and claims that in normal games and applications such an overload will not happen. At this time the limiter is only engaged when the driver detects Furmark / OCCT, it is not enabled during normal gaming. NVIDIA also explained that this is just a work in progress with more changes to come. From my own testing I can confirm that the limiter only engaged in Furmark and OCCT and not in other games I tested. I am still concerned that with heavy overclocking, especially on water and LN2 the limiter might engage, and reduce clocks which results in reduced performance. Real-time clock monitoring does not show the changed clocks, so besides the loss in performance it could be difficult to detect that state without additional testing equipment or software support.
I did some testing of this feature in Furmark and recorded card only power consumption over time. As you can see the blue line fluctuates heavily over time which also affects clocks and performance accordingly. Even though we see spikes over 300 W in the graph, the average (represented by the purple line) is clearly below 300 W. It also shows that the system is not flexible enough to adjust power consumption to hit exactly 300 W.

will be fun fighting the drivers :)) good luck to the first month release owners

Splave 11-08-2010 04:57 PM

oh god that sounds like a headache

DrNip 11-08-2010 05:04 PM

I have to get me a bigger PSU before I even think of getting a new GPU.

The more I hear about these the less whelmed I get.

Seems like they looked at the 480 and said, "Cold slow was funny, wasn't it? Tee hee! What can we do to make the paper release revision even more of a pain in the ass to overclock?"

with my bad estimation i think with an sr2....and single gtx580 will do 46-50k

spfoam1 11-17-2010 03:35 AM

...and your estimate for four GTX 580s on an SR-2?

Splave 11-17-2010 03:46 AM

75k?

GTX 580s

This won't impress any of you LN2 boys, but I thought I'd post the first couple runs I made with two EVGA GTX 580s as a comparison to other GPUs out there. The system is my email rig, with i7 950 CPU and 6 GBs of RAM. It's loaded with software and a Norton Internet security (not disabled) along with two printers and a scanner. No tweaks, I just ran the benchmark. Everything is air cooled at ambient temperature. I bumped the CPU up to 4404 MHZ and ran 3DMark vantage twice. First time with CPU (NO) physX, second time with GPU physX. This is like the average Joe run with his everyday use system popping the cards in and running them.

LOL Sweet Jeebus, your desktop PC is a monster!

Im glad you guys are not building laptops my 920 would cry

rickss69 11-19-2010 04:25 PM

Hard to compare when you had PhysX enabled...:this: Ahh...I see now, one with and one without.

spfoam1 11-20-2010 02:20 PM

A little bump up. Still on the daily rig loaded with BS software. This pretty much smokes my two HD4870s.
Not sure what happened to my GPUZ...looks like part of it got wiped out.

spfoam1 11-20-2010 04:05 PM

Here is a 3DMark 06 run with 2X GTX 580s on my i7 950 air cooled email rig. Once again it's not impressive but it gives an idea of what to expect on average Joe's gaming machine if you fork out the $ for a couple of these cards.
