Mineral Oil Cooling goes Mainstream
Someone finally went the extra mile and put together a production oil setup:

Very interesting i went to there website and watched the video man someone had alot of time on there hands. Very neat altho i say we do something like this with your pc!!!:trophy:

I think this is a stupid idea and have since day one as the average overclocker pulls his hardware in and out constantly as well as have to clear the cmos a time or two. It does look cool but wouldn't and couldn't suit my needs.
|
I think it is more for uber rich people that just wanna have something that nobody else does.

@ chucknit LOL i personally am not rich but i know i have around 3-4g in my pc and thats the price range as this one! I much perfer the feeling of building something myself but lets face it to someone who knows jack about pcs and does alot of gaming isnt the worst idea. Sorta hard to mess that up its already in fluid. Lets face it one time ago cars were only for rich people now everyone has one. I mean i built an area-51 pc by alien before dell baught them and that rig was like 6400 dollars and it was on water nothing as extreme as they have done here. Needless to say my wife poped a top when i told her that it was 6grand. Even came with like a briefe case pen and all kinds of other crap but didnt fly. Who knows water is going mainstream im seeing more and more people doing it. You would think the next step would be oil or something of that nature. Maybe they will even come out with vid cards that are covered with some kind of coating except for the ram and gpu to keep it exposed to the oil and if one chooses to revert back to air will be possible. |
Well the thing about the oil is that once the temps start to climb, there is no mechanism to remove the heat. Water cooling has that advantage. I'm not saying it wouldn't be something almost cool to own, just impractical for most enthusiast. I'm sure the guy has sold plenty though.

Now that I would like to see. What kind of container/case do you have in mind? Plus what are you gonna do about plumbing? Just have an inlet and outlet whole on the case? Oh yeah, what kinda pump will you need to pump thick ass oil?
|
Did u guys look at the video on this thing??? U know it has almost a car rad on the other side with a huge pump looks like 1.5-2 tubing pulling warm fluid from the top then sends it back to the vital hot parts and into the main bay with cooled oil? Ontop of that warm oil will always seperate from the colder oil and it will always rise to the top so there for the pump pulls from the top and sends back to the bottom and hot spots. Thats what all the clear tubing is to the cpu and cards. Its not just a mobo in a tank of fluid.
|
I saw how it's setup and unless it has a monster of a pump I am guessing that the flow is too low in that system to sustain much of an overclock. The reason would be the cooling blocks themselves creating too much restriction.

Doesnt that radiator serve all of the fluids, not just the colder fluid?

lol good one:trophy: |
I would have rather seen a triple rad at the top exhausting for the blocks on the gpu and CPU and then that massive radiator for the rest of the oil.

I gotta pull out the dick card and inquire as to your source there, they certainly look like cooling blocks and I haven't seen any real documentation on how their system works yet. If they aren't blocks then what is the point of the return lines from them? |

Ok after watching the video I will conclude that the chipsets are all cooled using a cup over a heatsink but the gpu's appear to be some type of block and the cpu block was never shown that I saw.
Tyan motherboard means the quality should be very good but I have my doubts on any overclocking. I did notice that they were using D5 pumps and that is an excellent example of a cheap pump that can handle pumping the mineral oil, I will likely use the same thing. All things considered, I would never pay that amount of $$$ for a pc like that but I would build my own. |

First time I came across a submerged computer it was at http://www.pugetsystems.com/submerged.php.
Tey even has done some testing, and a short build log. Follow the link for some numbers. It's not impressive, but imensely cool to look at. I've dabbled with the thought of doing a project like this, but have put it on hold indefinately. Also there are other homebrew systems around if you search youtube :) |

Why not just replace the coolant in a water cooled rig with mineral oli? Wouldn't that solve both problems? Thing is, I don't know the temp exchange rates between water and mineral oil - may be better off keeping the water flowing ???
|
Not to strir up the water/oil cooling thing again, but I could have sworn when this first came out (last year I believe) that it uses both water and air cooling.
IF they are actually using blocks for circulating the oil... I would think that would kind of defeat the purpose TBH... I could definitely see putting some type of fan over the naked chips for sure.. Also the performance of the rig is ~ twice as bad as air cooling. The whole rig stays the same temperature though, and it actually OCed pretty decently despite running so warm. Something to be considered there I suppose. Course this is all from memory, I am far to lazy to click a link and my internet is too slow to watch videos right now. |
IMHO is interesing, but they shouldhave suggested a different kind of hardware .
Should be nice to have the chance to buy the the enclosure with cooling system and power supply, so you can build your own machine with your specification :) |
its interesting but its a bit stupid for mainstream? imagine the RMA department for these kind of machines!
