Pretty good OC you got on that 170. How's the temp?, you have vcore overhead left.;)

Thanks. VCore is maxed at 1.57v on the Tyan Tomcat.....but I have an Ultra-D on the way so we'll see what it can really do. Not sure if the 314 FSB is too much or if 1.57v not enough. I wasn't really watching the temps, but I'm pretty sure it never broke 34C with the system on the back porch.

Mr.Scott 11-28-2010 02:17 PM

314 might be too much for that board, the chip will most definitely take more. The Ultra D will change everything. It's by far the king of the 939 boards. Feel free to contact me for tips or a modded bios for that board. I specialize in "Classicplatforms" Couldn't resist the cheap plug.

Hondacity 11-28-2010 02:19 PM

i herby force ny_driver to collaborate with the classic_platforms Mr_scott

git er done!!!

I see what you're up to....lol
You want me to train up a grinder or two for you.;)

Hondacity 11-28-2010 02:56 PM

i see no one better :D

ny_driver 11-28-2010 03:12 PM

I'm in. I have 5 939 chips right now...counting the FX-53 I just bought and the 4200+/Ultra-D I am buying tomorrow.

Thanks for offering to help. I heard the DFI LPs can be a little tricky. What the heck is that molex connector for?

Extra power if you intend to run SLI.

I'll take that as a compliment.:)

Thanks. I'm sure I'll have to run 2x4890 in "sli" for some benches.

OC Maximus 11-29-2010 01:23 PM

Crossfire ;)

OCM

ny_driver 11-29-2010 01:27 PM

I know but I want to run them in sli for a change.

Riiight......lemme know how that works out for ya.:D

ny_driver 11-30-2010 10:39 AM

So can I use 2 ATI cards on the Ultra?

Mr.Scott 11-30-2010 03:07 PM

No.
2 Nvidia, yes.
Multiple ATI cards = Crossfire
Multiple Nvidia cards = SLI
They're not interchangable. The Ultra D supports SLI so you'd need Nvidia cards. Either that or find a good Crossfire board and work in that platform.

ny_driver 12-03-2010 06:00 PM

I don't need to use 2 cards. I just got this board to have a good benchable 939 system. I just bought these for it as well. Should be fun.

I have a 4200+ coming with the board tomorrow, but for benchmarks are you better off with larger L2 cache or does that not matter? (the Opty170 only runs with single channel memory configuration)

Why does your 170 only run in single channel? There is no reason it should.

Neuromancer 12-03-2010 07:15 PM

Bad IMC?

That will hurt you in spi.

I loved my first 4200. Managed 3GHz on air. Back when I was first learning how to OC better than my peers. Pushed for 3.1 and *crash* and would never go past 2.7ish after that. *sigh

This is what I am thinking. Perhaps it was just a quirk of the Tyan though I don't see how/why as even my SK8N will run old Sledgehammers is D.C.

IDK ny_driver but you seem fairly new to the game so perhaps it is simply user error on your part. Forgive me if I am being presumptuous.

Neuromancer 12-03-2010 07:31 PM

LOL funny he put SLI in quotes.

Funnier still is pronouncing it. SLY. Which is old school speak for a manly man that "prefers the company of men" (EDIT: I originally put light in loafers, but that was totally wrong lol)

ny_driver 12-04-2010 02:56 AM

 I damaged the IMC removing the IHS. Won't post on any board in DC configuration.

Will the smaller L2 of the 4200+ hurt me in benchmarks vs a 1MB L2 per core chip?

Mr.Scott 12-04-2010 04:32 AM

Probably. You're running a maimed chip is most definitely not going to help your cause.

ny_driver 12-04-2010 04:50 AM

I wish I could find a good Toledo for a decent price;).

I sold my Opty 180s...they weren't as good as the 170 though.

Should be able to find one of a decent model and stepping if you shop around. Opty's are more expensive on average but a higher model X2 can be expensive as well.

Check the "For Sale" sections of whatever forums you frequent and you'll probrably run across a good deal.

BTW, I'm Kryton.

ny_driver 12-04-2010 03:15 PM

Yeah maybe I'll find one.

It's a real shame I damaged the 170s IMC because that thing cranks pretty good. Haven't even tried it on the Ultra yet.

Good to see you.
