Which Router?

I gotta order a wireless router for the outlaws this evening. It will be used for a wired connection to the one PC and wireless for ipad, iphone, occasional crackberry (me), and a second PC on the wireless network soon. The house is a fairly long one story and the ipad and second PC will need to access the router on the opposite end of the house, if possible. If not, then I'll get some power-line adapters. Goals are to have very strong wireless signal and as cheap as possible without getting junk. Basically I'd like to stay with netgear, dlink, or linksys unless you know of a kick ass router from another company.

GFDuke 01-18-2011 02:33 AM

Linksys ftw imo. I've never had a problem. As far as signal strength.....before i locked mine i found out that my neighbors about 150ft up the street were taping me. He casually mentioned that he appreciated that when he comes up from the city he gets free internet access from someon in the neighborhood. And, had a great signal. That was about 3 yars ago when i first got it and didn't know how to secure it. lol pwned.

I tried that initially in this house Chuch and got so frustrated with it going down all the time that I went under the house with lan cable and hardwired everything. Best thing I ever did.

DrNip 01-18-2011 02:41 AM

This router FTW.

Neuromancer 01-18-2011 04:15 AM

Blech Wireless. Even N band sucks. Gigabit wired FTW

Chuchnit 01-18-2011 05:56 AM

Its gotta be wireless for the phones and ipad. I hate wireless too.

ocgmj 01-18-2011 06:25 AM

Nips suggestion with a Tomato Firmware would work nicely.

Witchdoctor 01-18-2011 06:37 AM

I have the same one Nip has, mine works ....

That is about all I can say. Not a big wirless fan.

My girlfriend uses it for here Kindle and ipod

The boys use it for surfing.

For shooters forget it :ohcrap:

Had to run a wire up to their room ultimantly

DrNip 01-18-2011 07:20 AM

The Linksys should be sufficient enough as I'm sure his in-laws aren't gaming or anything of this nature. LOL

Ya the main reason they want a router is for the ipad. I hate wireless too, but wifi is nice to surf on my crackberry.

Yep mother-in-law is an avid farmviller. Nah they just need internet access. Speed isn't that big of a deal but always nice to buy for future needs.

DrNip 01-18-2011 07:49 AM

If your in-laws are anything like mine or my parents or of anybody else of that nature, they won't need wireless N. Wireless G will be just fine. Not to mention Wireless N cost too much and the hardware for it is kinda shatty. One would think after all these years it would be cheaper and better than what it is.

Witchdoctor 01-18-2011 09:25 AM

Problem is Joe home owner is happy the stuff just works.

No cry out for this technoligy to get better.... everyon e exspects wireless to suck ....

An those routers are flying of the shelf ... now TV and blue rays come with bundled routers .....

Buy a $ 3500 tv set and get a sweatgear wirless free ................ :ohcrap:

Ya those gay facebook games are the only bandwidth eaters they use. The rest is just web surfing and online banking. That doesn't matter though since the main PC will be on wired LAN. The biggest thing is being able to pick up a good signal in the other end of the house with the wireless for the ipad. Most of the wifi phone usage will be near the router anyways.

i have used alotta routers and i am most happy wiht that linksys one e3000 it's really good and all.. but it's 150~200 cash!
when that died i got this pos little netgear dual band router... it's been dropping all the time when there is alotta things going on on the network..
and then after that i got this belkin router it's there highest end (the box is purple) lol i got it for 25 shipped and it works surprisingly well haven't try bench it or anything but it's got giga and it's cheap! like anywhere from 50~70
it's got giga, dual band and a usb port. also i think its kool it's got a guest wifi account

The old Linksys routers were great. The new ones with the internal antenna suck. Try one of the Asus DDWRT capable ones instead.

ether.real 01-21-2011 08:14 AM

Gonna try. It's been a heck of a wild ride this year. So much, that I am out of the loop on hardware, so I will probably lurking around so that I can get caught up again. Maybe I will have to make a thread in the General Section to catch up with y'all.

Witchdoctor 01-21-2011 08:31 AM

Hey ether

DIR-655 is onsale damamged box at tiger direct for $80.

N-300 and gigabit ethernet.

I have had no problems with mine. I normally do not recommend D-Link stuff but I have had 0 issues with mine over the last year. Only one PC and the Wii is wireless though. PC is N Wii is G.

ether.real 01-21-2011 09:37 AM

Old D-Link was garbage, their new stuff seems pretty good. Old Linksys was good, the new ones seem to be garbage. Que sera, I suppose.

any links? or is this by experience?

ether.real 01-21-2011 09:49 AM

Personal experience, mostly. The main issue with the new Linksys is that the internal antenna hurts range pretty badly.

Hondacity 01-21-2011 10:12 AM

which linksys have you tried?

ether.real 01-21-2011 10:16 AM

I run a PC Repair business, I have been exposed to several.

Hondacity 01-21-2011 10:20 AM
