Intel recalls SB chipsets...
Article is here:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/31/i...ments-stopped/ Looks like some problem with the SATA controller... |
Possibly the reason for all my OS failures? I think my chip just died...crawling atm just trying to install a simple app.
|
Great. Got me a nice chip and now this.
|
It doesn't affect the chips, just the chipsets, so motherboards ;)
And yes rick, quite possible. Retailers aren't going to be happy with all the RMAs, and intel say they should be getting new boards out toward the end of feb, and have full production back by april. Bit of a wait... |

Source: http://arstechnica.com/hardware/news...a-screw-up.ars My guess is it isn't causing your OS to bork. Then again I dunno. |
already rma'd before news came out :D
|
Good work, but looks like you won't get a new working board till mid feb :/
|
oh im getting another board :D
most boards have multiple sata controllers anyway |
No matter as it appears my 2600K is beyond repair as well. This has been a fine adventure...
|
sleeping on it :D
|
Now I am beginning to wonder if Evga knew this all along and is the reason for not releasing any of their motherboards for this platform. :cool3:
|
WTF,
looks like I will be RMAing mine ........ Lost a Win 7 install last night bebching 05  |

I doubt it, I mean, looking at anandtech, intel say failure rate is 5-15% over 3 years.
So it can't be that bad. And I don' see how they could have known? |

evga doesn't have money ..lol |

All I can tell you is I have lost every ssd/hdd install I have prepared for this mb...I have never had that kind of luck with any other platform and I used to swap drives between platforms with no problems.
So I guess it is up to us to contact Asus and get another mb? |

So far I haven't found any sata problems or lost any OSes with my UD5 so I'm crossing my fingers. Seems like my board is doing fine, except for the memory (hypers) compatibility issues :argh: which may or may not eventually be fixed via bios update. Think its time to invest in some Gskills. |
what is your sata controller.....
|
RMA approved by NewEgg - Both cpu and mb going back tm.

Interestingly enough the problem doesn’t affect ports 1 & 2 on the 6-series chipset. Remember that Intel has two 6Gbps ports and four 3Gbps ports on P67/H67, only the latter four are impacted by this problem. Intel's DP67BG—The blue SATA ports on the right are 6Gbps, the black ones are 3Gbps. The Blue ports are unaffected by the bug. If you’re a current Sandy Bridge user and want to be sure you don’t have any problems until you can get replacement hardware, stick to using the 6Gbps ports on your board (which should be the first two ports). The Fix The SATA bug exists in hardware and there’s no way to provide a driver or firmware update that can fix it. The fix requires a metal layer change, which will result in a new hardware stepping (resulting in the ~3 week delay before replacement hardware is ready). |
Looks like I will be sitting idol for a while,
the Revolution has 2x 6GB Realtek controller as well But mine is RMA'd as well, Installing XP for 6 hours and losing a win 7 partition last night was enough for me plus 52x brick wall on my end |

I meant EVGA, considering other manufacturers seemingly didn't

yea prolly is my CPU, but with the other problems the board has it is easy to find fault.
Not sure what I am going to go with now, but the Ud7 is the only other 2x 16 slot board so far, it just squeezes the GPU's together .... How can the M4E AKA Asus flagship not have 2 16x lanes ..... WTF eVGA where are they with the Classy ? |
All 1155 boards have been deactivated at the egg ............ :ohcrap:
|
It was said that all SB shipping is going to be stopped
Suggested that it wouldn't be resumed until late feb when the new boards are ready. |
Here is a good article on the topic straight from the horse's mouth.
Intel Newsroom The company expects to begin delivering the updated version of the chipset to customers in late February and expects full volume recovery in April. Intel stands behind its products and is committed to product quality. For computer makers and other Intel customers that have bought potentially affected chipsets or systems, Intel will work with its OEM partners to accept the return of the affected chipsets, and plans to support modifications or replacements needed on motherboards or systems. |
This ain't going to be cheap.....
Pocket change for Intel ............ |
Projected cost is $1 billion.
Read from bit-tech: The $300m figure mentioned in the original press release is the revenue hit due to shutting down and restarting production. This has to be added to the estimate $700m cost of replacing the chips already out there (with manufacturers as well as consumers). That revenue hit is only in this quarter but Intel don't expect the full year revenue to be affected too much! Jeez this company makes too much money! $1 billion! http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=202742 |

Looks like I got lucky since I didn't jump on SB right away.
|
Honestly, this whole recall situation doesn't really affect those who planned on using SB as a benching platform and moving on. The rest, well it really sucks.
|
Problem is the boards will have zero resale value .... so it is eat it or send it back ...
I wanted mine long term for a gamer, now will be waiting for a bit untill new boards are availible I guess ... |
