What do you do?

Just reading what Scott does for a living, and was fasenated reading it, So sitting here I thought it would be cool to have a thread dedicated to what we all do at our day jobs

For me

I am a plumbing estimator and operations manager for a mid sized Mechanical company of about 80 employee's in Lancaster PA.
I create quotes for job as small as remodleing a bathroom in someones home to a 170 room hotel we are finishishing in the Pittsburg Area, crazy out there right now, with the Superbowl crazies .....

The largest job I ever quoted was a Fedex Hub in Harrisburg PA. 2.7 million .... I was high unfortunatly and did not land that one ......... :ohcrap:

I also run all the man power, payroll, schedule the jobs and order the material in for said jobs. It is a decent way to make a living but I have to say, I lacks what it once had as with the econemy the way it is everybody nickle and dimes me all day and is getting discouraging to see the lack of quality of some of todays builders, it is all quanity at the lowest possible price and anymore it seems we work for huge construction managment companies rather than actual builders. sorry, just ranting ...

Not to glamerous

But

It's a living .........

I want to be a house inspector one day but until then I work at a prison full time and fix sewing machines with my dad every Saturday for about 4 hours. The sewing machine gig is in the works of being a Pfaff outlet repair shop meaning sewing machines would be sent to us from out of state. Can't wait for that because I make about $100-200 every Saturday for only 4 hours of work. That trumps the money I am making at the prison. It's cheese wiz and reminds me alot of repairing computers. I will be quiting my job at the prison when this happens. Would love to do the sewing machine and inspector job.

Too many darn squid around here. :P

My story is pretty simple. I manage a medical practice. It sucks. There is too much stuff to do and with four locations it is all but impossible to keep an eye on everything.

thebanik 02-02-2011 09:23 AM

Nothing glamorous here, :(. I used to be a Business Analyst with France Telecom, which have offices in 123 countries. With many similar but different applications being used in different countries. I used to analyse the applications which used to come up for review from technical as well business POV and then used to suggest if any of them can be phased out saving the company huge licensing fees. Was a good and very very important and unique role in the organisation(and did I mention I used to take months to analyse the applications, :P_, But then my immediate manager was an asshole, and just because of him decided to take another position within FT. Now I am a senior DBA in the same company but have to spend huge hours in office supporting one thing or the other and this seem to me to be run of the mill kind of job, :(

Lineman huh? How's the knees holdin' up after the years?

2chesapeakes 02-02-2011 10:50 AM

I curently hold a journeyman and master electricians license as well as a construction supervisors license in MA. For the past three years I have been a traveling construction supervisor and assistant PM building and renovating mission critical facilities.

Prior to this adventure I had my own contracting bussiness which I decided to close when the economy strated falling out from underneath me. I figured it was better to walk away instead of losing everything I had worked for.

I have also worked as a field electrician, electrical estimator and project manager for a firm that was involved in MA public works. We consistantly bid project in the range of 2 tpo 6 million.

Working as a mechanical engineer / Tech. for a big PCB manufacturer supporting the engineering, facility's and maint. departments. Before that I worked for a company which used to build PCB plating equipment and traveled all over the world as a project manager supporting the installations. I was in Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, Russia to mention a few of them. This was a great time of alcohol abuse and foreign ass slapping. All this ended with the marriage and now I'm just another guy with a boring job which pays the bills.

Custom Factory Integration Engineer (OS imaging) for a fairly large company. When a large corporation orders new pc's, laptops and servers I build the licensed images with all the bells and whistles to run in their environment out of the box.

Bones 02-04-2011 10:19 AM

I currently do maintenance at a distribution center involving just about anything you can think of.

My "Official" job title is building maintenance/HVAC tech but I do way more than that. Whether it's conveyor equip, forklifts, electrical, inspection and testing of the fire sprinkler system, whatever is needed at the time is what I do.

When someone asks the question, I just ell 'em I'm a jackass of all trades.... :D

MaadDaawg 02-04-2011 10:44 AM

I used to travel the world as a Purchasing Agent for United Airlines and managed 400MM in catering contracts. Boss was an asshole so I went to work with a German Owned Company (Lufthansa) and traveled the states as a key Account manager for United Airlines (about 60MM annually).

Got laid off in October due manpower reduction and decided to start my own business - MaadDaawg Enterprises Inc :D I have an e-bay store, a couple of websites for peeps to buy shit on, and do e-Marketing. Paying the bills and I never have to change out of my Gears of War jamies

My Fu Mancu is now hanging about 2 inches below my chin and in a few months I hope to have enuf hair to have a ponytail :P Figured if I'm gonna be a techie I should look like one. Not easy to do when you're effing 60 years old

Working harder than ever but don't seem like it :)
