Let us Pray

We had to rush my little girl Katey to the emergency vet last night after dinner because she had lost control of all four of her legs. She was fine while she layed down against the counter as we ate, but when I called her to go upstairs with me she couldn't walk :ohcrap:

She eventually regained some balance in front, but her rear legs would not work.

I carried her (91lbs) out of the house, down 8 stairs, and over to the car. Just made it cause I'm not used to carrying that kind of weight, especially down stairs.

Vet sais it's nerological and something is pressing on her spine.. says this happens in dogs and often times in a day the problem piece of whatever is washed away and the dog is fine, but he said it could take weeks for that to happen as well. We had to leave her at the hospital at least through Monday

At least $2,300 so far until the neurologist sees her. If he want's MRI pics, those are a grand a pop....might have to sell all my equipment to pay, but gotta keep priorities in line

won't be a good day for me, but Happy Easter to all of you

Witchdoctor 04-24-2011 05:12 AM

O shit bro,

That sucks with a capitol suck

I hope all turns out well for you and the family. It is a tough situation with pets as treating them has become insanly expencive.

best of luck and try your best to enjoy the day with your loved ones .

MaadDaawg 04-24-2011 05:19 AM

Thanks Witchie.

but how can you enjoy an Easter meal when one of the family is in the hospital?? Thinking I may hold off Easter dinner until she gets home

DOM 04-24-2011 07:16 AM

aww thats sad hope she gets well soon

happy easter

2chesapeakes 04-24-2011 07:18 AM

Wow I am sorry to hear that. Hope everything works out for the best.

Mr.Scott 04-24-2011 09:16 AM

I wish you very much luck MD. My wife was a vet tech for about 15 years. She says " think with your head and not with your heart". It's a combination of a money spent issue and a quality of life issue for the dog. Do what's best. It doesn't make it any easier in either case. Not trying to be an @sshole here, I do feel bad, but just trying to help you make a smart decision, for both the animal, and your wallet.
My $.02 that I probably shouldn't have posted. Don't hold it against me please.

Kal-EL 04-24-2011 09:20 AM

Good luck dawgs.

reflex99 04-24-2011 11:48 AM

xzibit would be proud of your dedication to dawgs

MaadDaawg 04-25-2011 07:10 AM

Thanks all, and, sound advice Mr. Scott. Unfortunately advice that I cannot follow unless the money aspect of it becomes overly obscene. I'll put her to sleep rather than spend the money when I reach the limit on what I would spend to keep one of my daughters alive if they were in the hospital, no more, no less

She was seen by the Neurologist and is scheduled to get an MRI around noon, then we'll know better.

We are hoping it's a type of blood clot that dogs can get that puts pressure on the spinal column until it's washed away by body fluids. If that's what it is then it's temporary issue that solves itself. Could be a day, could be a month

She's not in pain and otherwise perffectly healthy so it's probably not a slipped disk that would require surgery.

DOM 04-25-2011 07:26 AM

how old is she?

RomDominance 04-25-2011 07:52 AM

Sorry MD, you know I am with you on this, best of luck.

MaadDaawg 04-25-2011 02:26 PM

Thank you everyone for your thoughts, good wishes, and good vibes. Katey just came out of surgery and the doctor said everything went very good. She'll need to stay in the hospital another 2 or 3 days but he makes it sound like she'll be walking again very soon :)

Really appreciate all the support guys

Thanks

Our thoughts are with u

MaadDaawg 04-26-2011 06:19 AM

Thanks again all.. really means alot !

Waiting to hear from the neorologist for the morning report, she should be ready to come home in a couple of days. Her regular vet called me last night and said that the guy who operated on her is one of the best in the country, and that his e-mail report to her was that everything went excellently.

We caught it fast, got her right in so there was no damage to the spinal cord. They put a mylar plate in replace the one that gave away.

Surprised to to find out they go in from the throat/chest area and not the top of the shoulders :Dizzy:

Whatever works I say :D

They do the same for humans, the nerve endings run outward from the spine at the back area. Entry from the front of the neck, chest or abdominals significantly reduces risk of nerve damage or paralysis.

MaadDaawg 04-26-2011 12:03 PM

I went to spend some time with her today. Her eyes and her demeanor are the old Katey, and they tell me that because of the way she was holding herself that they gave her a high probability for recovery.

BIG incision on her chest that right now is stapled shut. She should be coming home tomorrow or Thursday :D

Gonna have to hit my retirement account to pay for this one  but I'd do it again in a second ... I can always beg besides the offramps, I hear they make up to $100 a day tax free :P

ny_driver 04-27-2011 09:33 AM

Glad to hear the good news. :)

I too would spend way more than my brain tells me I should to save my little buddies. :good:

Neuromancer 04-27-2011 05:39 PM

Way to go Dawg! Can't say I would do teh same, but would definitely sell off shit I got to fund something for something dear to me :)

glad all is doing well :)

sumonpathak 04-30-2011 05:43 AM

Good to hear that she is okey:D
can we have some pics????
if possible....i don't have the space to keep an Pet but am an dog lover...so am really anxious

MaadDaawg 04-30-2011 05:52 PM

Katey came home Thursday around noon. She couldn't walk at all so we had to carry her with a harness in front and a sling in the back - she's 91lbs  She slept most of the day, but had a can of dog food for dinner.

Friday we got her walking a little bit, took her outside a couple times holding her just enough to support her as her legs were still pretty weak and wobbly. She essentially has to learn to walk again. During the second trip outside she finally peed, which was quite a triumph :D

Today she's been up and out several times, and she is starting to actually walk instead of just dragging her legs, and, she can support herself standing - another triumph :) She wouldn't piss or shit though so we went back to the vet so they could show us how to "express" her.

The vet couldn't get her to piss either so they took her in back while we waited up front. They finally came out and told us she had shit all over the place and had peed on the floor just as they were thinking about keeping her overnight

She practically ran for the car, and tried to jump out when we got home, I grabbed her harnes just in time.

We have to carry up the stairs, and she's banned from climbing stairs for 2 to 3 weeks. We have a three story house :Dizzy: I've been sleeping on an air matrix on the first floor with her just in case.

So far so good, and she's getting stronger by the day. I on the other hand, am getting more and more tired by the day

Here you go Bro, except these are all pre-surgery pics one or two may be up to a year old. Only difference is now she has a scar about 6 to 8 inches long on her neck that is being kept closed by staples every 1/4 inch and she's wearing front and back harnesses so I can help her learn to walk. Oh yeah, she was overweight then but is almost at her perfect weight of 94lb now (she was 91 going into the hospital and 85lbs coming home) :D

Those would be bummer pics, so I'm not taking any of her now.... hope you understand :)

sumonpathak 05-01-2011 11:02 PM

i understand.....its better that way:)....
BTW she looks good...and your backyard

Rogue210 05-02-2011 05:54 AM

I am so glad she is okay and getting better! :D

MaadDaawg 05-03-2011 07:16 AM

Thanks :)

today is her best day so far, but we're thinking we may need to bring our other dog back to the Rescue as she seems to be terrified of him and that may be why she walks, pees, and shit's better when he is not around.

bummer, cause he's a really great dog :(

sumonpathak 05-30-2011 05:55 AM

heyy bro...how is she?

MaadDaawg 05-30-2011 11:14 AM

Hey Bro, thanks for asking :)

She's doing fantastic, and except for a little bit of weekness still in her back legs she's completely her old self again  Nothing short of miraculous!! Worth every penny :D

sumonpathak 05-30-2011 08:34 PM

wow....great news bro:D

MaadDaawg 05-31-2011 04:54 AM

yeah it is :) But THANKS AGAIN for thinking about her :)

ReverendMaynard 05-31-2011 05:47 AM
