Cold Blast from the Past !

This is basically a repost from another site, but here you go as this section seems empty :)

Cold Blast from the Past !

It was one of those days where I was sitting in front of my computer, bummed, trying to figure out a few life issues I have mainly with the care of my mother who is in a dementia/Alzheimer’s care facility, but my thoughts kept going to benching as they always seem to do LOL

An email dropped in my inbox from a person I had not heard from in some time and that in itself was surprising to me.
I opened the email and my jaw just about dropped to the floor.

A most amazing thing was dropped on my door step, well email inbox :) completely out of the blue.
I had to reread it several times just to make sure and I hit the reply button and asked to tell me more !

Several email exchanges went back and forth, my mind was racing thinking about the details and basically how the heck am I going to pull this off.

Finally a phone call from this person and things were settled on with dates and times etc.

The day came today and off I went, leaving at 1:00am and just returning at 7:30pm, something like 18.5 hours of solid driving of 856 miles. I am very tired LOL.

This is what dropped into my benching room tonight. This is the build log.

Just a pic of it here, this is a 3 year old picture btw
http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/1117/img8280.jpg

And it in it’s new home
http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/1593/homep.jpg

I want to make this clear here. I do not know who the original owner of this machine is. From what I was told it was only used a few times and put into storage for all these years.
Please do not ask any details of any of the parties involved in this as they wish to remain unknown, for whatever reasons they have, I will honor their wishes.

All I know is it was offered to me by a 3rd party broker and I went for it.

The unit needs a bit of cleaning, mostly dust, and a few other things tidied up. But all in all it is in great shape.
It was run for me so I could see how it works and with different loads.

At 200w… it is holding -95c…
At 270w… it is holding -89c….
At 285w… it is holding -87c….

As I am a bit tired atm I will test this myself here at home, get used to running it and get to work on cleaning it up. I will post more pic’s of it and do a few benches with it to see how it handles these loads.

You cannot imagine how I excited I am to have this unit in my bench room, it was the first 2 stager build that I just feel in love with back when I first started looking at these things, and now here it is <pinches self>

Enjoy !

Oops I still crapped my pants. You are my hero as well Buckeye.

Jeffro64 06-06-2009 06:38 AM

Me 3... I think I just wet myself!

BTW guy's, what kind of thermometers/probes are those? I've been looking but haven't found any that get much below 50c.

Kal-EL 06-06-2009 07:00 AM

k-type temp probes, and multimeters that read temps with k-type probes.

I picked up craftsman from Sears that came with a k-probe.

DrNip 06-06-2009 07:19 AM

I picked mine up at Harbor Freight Tools for $19.99. It is $24.99 now. Still pretty damn cheap if you ask me. Gets the job done.

Jeffro64 06-06-2009 07:39 AM

But that one says Temperature probe: 20° Celsius to 1000° Celsius, I need one that goes sub zero for dice and LN2 don't I?

DrNip 06-06-2009 07:57 AM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermocouple

K Type: Continuos Temp Range: 0 to +1100 Short Term Temp Range: −180 to +1300

I have had mine hooked up for 8+ hours and stay at -60 degrees so I don't know what they are talking continuos and short term.

Hmmmm... I have a Craftsman around here somewhere but not sure it does temps. I'll have to look into that.

I just want to know how much one of those would set me back?

Dude that makes dice benching so noobish. hahaha I would rather have that over a dewar and F1 pot. With that one you just fire it up and go :)

DrNip 06-06-2009 11:09 AM

I so want a cascade setup. Hell even a single stage will do me over.

punx223 06-06-2009 11:12 AM

Bill like i said before it was awesome seeing that thing... that thing is a beast!!!

Buckeye 06-06-2009 11:14 AM

The Cascade ?

Well depends on who is building it and how they did it. Some are taking AC units they get from Home Depot and converting them into a 2 stage Cascade. They work but don't expect umber cooling from them, I guess.

Here is the hardest part of it... living near the builder is a big plus as these units weigh a lot and shipping them would be a night mare.

This unit weighs prolly close to 200 lbs.

I have seen many different 2 stage units, some on plywood, others spend more attention to detail. Safety is also a big concern considering the gasses they use for the second stage, usually is R1150 which is very explosive and under high pressure.

My requirements were a clean build so it doesn't look like a bomb ready to go off, and with all the safty stuff. Mine has a blow off valve on the second stage that will kick in if the pressure gets to high, very smart idea.

Next is power requirements. Two big condensors draw a lot of power and if on the same line could start to pop fuses in your breaker box. I am not sure at this time if that will happen to me. If it does I will then layout an extension cord to another wall socket if that happens.

I will not find out about the power issue until tomorrow. After moving these things like I did yesterday it's best to let them sit for a day so all the oil and what not settles back down. If you don't do that you risk having a small amount of oil get into the Evap and freeze there which would cause a clog, not a good idea ;)

These are much more powerful than a SS Phase unit, lots of stuff going on with them.

DrNip 06-06-2009 11:15 AM

That thing is freakin bananas!!!

It scares me. I would be afraid I would catchg somethin on fire.

Kal-EL 06-06-2009 11:17 AM

Had to rate this thread as excellent! :D

punx223 06-06-2009 11:17 AM

its as safe as a single stage nip.... your less safe with dice or LN2 benching, as the cascade/single stage is pretty consistent..... and usually qill freeze just the cpu and local area, to whereas you have seen teh ice buildup on a F1EE

i like teh cascade idea as it almost eliminates the need for LN2 except for chips like teh PII or teh likes who wont cold but above -130

Yes Shannon it's allways great to get a chance to met up with you !
You saw it all tied down and covered up tho., it looks much better in the bench room ;)

Diving with that thing in the back was interesting, I could clearly feel the weight of it in the back. It was a very interesting trip that's for sure LOL.

punx223 06-06-2009 11:19 AM

hell dude i just wish we coulda went into the office and strapped it on the X58/Xeon :D

Have them send me a few, better yet bring a few down here and we can give them a good benching session ;)

Buckeye 06-07-2009 05:18 PM

Ok I have finished my first test run and everything went great :)

Operating Instructions:

Start First Stage and wait until Heat Exchange Output gets down to ~-40c range
Start Second Stage and keep an eye on Heat Exchange Output #2, it should stay below -35c

To Shut Down, turn off Second Stage and wait until pressure equalizes on both Red and Blue Gauge’s,
around -100psi. Was told not really needed but a good idea.

Blue Gauge is Low Pressure
Red Gauge is High Pressure
* Note: Second Stage Low Pressure, Blue Gauge is off by 10psi, higher than it should be

Left side is First Stage Pressure Gauges
Right side is Second Stage Pressure Gauges

Typical operating pressure of High Side of Second Stage would be from 165-215 or so depending on
load condition.

Load Ranges: These I saw myself on the very first run of the unit before I took it home.
At 200w… it is holding -95c…
At 270w… it is holding -89c….
At 285w… it is holding -87c….

1st stage:
3/4+ hp condensing unit (has low pressure cut off)
SLHX (shell tube thing...)
Danfoss TUAE TXV.
Swep plate hx.

2nd stage:
1/2+ hp compressor
Condenser for my usual v2000 unit for desuperheater.
SLHX 3ft of 5/16 in 1/2
Captubing to Evap (chilly1 evap)
Yellow jacket 3/8 stainless steel flex line (flare end on each)
Highside cut off switch.

So here I have the completed video of the first test run. Please forgive my noobish video skills :)
As the startup of the first stage takes a few minutes I cut out most of that so as not to bore everyone :)

Things I need to do:
Pickup 2 more temp guages so that I do not have to swap out the probes. I would like to watch all temps at one time.
Small compact 12v power supply so I do not have to use a PC PSU just to power the 2 fans, 1 on the 1st stage condensor and the other that is on the 2nd stage compressor to help keep that cool, that was added after the build was completed and was told not really needed.
Redo a few more places of insulation.

So here you go, enjoy :)
Most of the noise you hear is the First Stage Compresor, it's a beast ! Then the big compressor fan.

Embedded the video for yah buddy. I get the feeling this thing having been around for a while, is, well, older and wiser, with phenomenal cosmic powers :confused3:

I'll have to study this thing for a bit :ash1: Big Thanks for listing us on your video buddy, :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Everyone needs to find the thread tool at the top where it says "rate this thread" and set it to excellent. Then you need to click on the rep badge for Buckeye and click add to rep. Do it now. that is all.

*Stickied as well

punx223 06-07-2009 05:37 PM

lol like i said in the other posts.... i think bill is in a race to see who can pull down to -100 the quickest

Chuchnit 06-08-2009 01:19 AM

Wow Buckeye. Thanks a bunch for sharing! Looks like you get to have all the fun ;)

Bones 07-12-2009 02:38 PM

Nice indeed!

Roll it out, set it up and post some of the craziest bench scores around - That's how it's done.

Rock on! :band1:
