Windows 10 Discussion

windows10-build10162
Microsoft today released Windows 10 RTM build 10240 to Windows Insiders. This new build includes even better Microsoft Edge browser which beats Chrome and Safari on their own JavaScript benchmarks:

On WebKit Sunspider, Edge is 112% faster than Chrome
On Google Octane, Edge is 11% faster than Chrome
On Apple JetStream, Edge is 37% faster than Chrome
As you already know, on PCs and tablets Microsoft has added “Mobile” to the Office app names to help distinguish them from the Office desktop suite. Also they have removed “Preview” from the app names and from next week, you will need an Office 365 subscription to edit on Windows 10 PCs and larger tablets.

Another small but important thing, the desktop watermark is no longer there.

No where to go but up from Win 8

Looks like it will still not be allowed for submissions though

Most of the promise from this os surrounds DX12 anyways, DX12 benchmark surely coming...

Still, not sure why they wouldn't allow other benches to be run on Win 10 but truth be told I haven't been spending much time browsing hwbot. Just lost in my own sauce atm.

Oh that! that thing, yah, no worries witchy, they'll slap an hwbot wrapper around the os and we'll all be zoom zoomin Hwindows10 compliant.

lol?

Word is that windows 10 will push updates for apps, proggies, system updates automatically (no choice there). The only iteration of w10 that won't push is Enterprise and while she's a gallant ship I have a hunch a gifted coder will find the right switch to let other iterations go without forced updates.

Interesting.

W8 or W10 may not be allowed by the bot for submissions but who cares (I do understand why). W10 should be better in every aspect afaik. DX12 looks like a big step forward, we will see....

I'm pretty darn excited about this W10 release. (probably cause I'm not out to sea :))

Anywho, I'm sure someone smart will figure it all out and find a way to bench with dx12.

Interesting times ahead.....

Kal-EL 07-17-2015 08:28 PM

A closer look at the Win 10 logo shows how robust the operating system really is...

Kal-EL 07-17-2015 08:34 PM

Seriously tho, what impact will this have on the Overclocking scene?

Overclocking's roots are intertwined with the gaming community. The relationship will no
longer exist if benchmarks on win10 are unavailable. Point here is there will still be benchmarks.

Just not Hwbot validated benchmarks. Hurray!, I answered my own question. Long live Overclocking :)

Onus to hwbot to figure a way out of the shit or be left benching old operating systems that the gaming community and manuf's don't much give a rat's rump about.

thoughts??...

Witchdoctor 07-18-2015 04:15 AM

The overclocking community is such a small demographic it really does not matter to M$
Why would they try to fix anything, probably like normal this will simply be a beta for us to complain about for a few months until it is truly ready for release AKA 10.1 :Dizzy:

Just got my free windows 10 upgrade notice so I should have it on my 24/7 in a week or so :)

kikicoco1334 07-22-2015 03:08 AM

i c an't remember what it was called anymore but there is a data mining application built into the operating system itself. and you might not be able to turn it off at all.

I don't THINK its Cortana, IIRC it was a sub application, I'll look into it and update you guys. I read that about 4 months ago so its a little fuzzy in my brain :Dizzy:

kikicoco1334 07-22-2015 08:45 AM

its Delve I was thinking of. sorry for the confusion

Office Delve?

It does'nt look like its a mandatory component install for Office. Seems like the label says its specifically for mining data on your apps/docs to feed it back to you for continuity.

It may be safe to go back in the water now, :hand:

OC Maximus 08-02-2015 09:23 AM

Here we go. About to finishing imaging then rebooting to see if this W10 upgrade takes. Crossing my phalanges.

Witchdoctor 08-02-2015 10:10 AM

just updated the gamer to 10

jury still out, but a start menu is a good start :blink:

I edited this ????

OC Maximus 08-02-2015 10:31 AM

Had one issue during install. PC froze and had to reboot. Maybe due to my overclock and not windows fault. Messing around with Windows 10 now. Woot!

OC Maximus 08-02-2015 07:25 PM

Spoke to soon. Looks like my sound isn't working. Gonna check a few things. Maybe a driver issue, idk.

I'm gonna hold off for a while on Windows 10. Direct X 12 was the lure for me but it can wait.

What back up software did you use to back out of Windows 10?

OC Maximus 08-02-2015 08:19 PM

Just an image :blink:

Thats a bit to complicated for me, just a regular windows image.

This current OS only a month old refresh. If it gets borked I'll just reload.

Fixed sound. All I had to do was click on the restore defaults button.

I'll report back if I find any other issues.

Anyone apply Windows 10 upgrade to a multi-boot loader os?

So say you have your boot loader like this:

WinXP
Windows 7 32 bit
Windows 7 64 bit (and you upgraded this os to Windows 10)

Any problems with the boot loader after the upgrade?

Hearin some stuff about it using your bandwidth like a p2p to assist with other wX upgrades. Just starting my upgrade download now and it seems I'll be keepin a sharp eye out for stuff to disable.

OC Maximus 08-08-2015 09:05 AM

I haven't started tweaking yet. Noticed that I had to setup sli again after upgrade.

Kal-EL 08-08-2015 11:21 AM

I get some Republic of Gamers loading logo before getting into the os, like the old windows logo but Republic of Gamers

Then init log error from an Asus Setup file x 3. Will have to do a complete fresh install. Buggy as heck. Testing BFH and get all sorts of graphical anomilies during load but holy crap once it gets in game the picture is way better than win7 and smooth as fek without g-sync enabled.
Preliminarily it looks like g-sync is now obsolete, lol. IN win7 it was necessary to get buttery frames.

Only prob now is getting random dx error events. Driver crash.

Hopefully a fresh install cures all.

Just make sure you have your product key from old win7 install upgrade to wx and that it was activated in WX.

Another tid-bit. Navigating to facebook using CHROME results in a I'm sorry theres an issued with your account webpage. Using IE is no problem. Very weird.

Just make sure you have your product key from old win7 install upgrade to wx and that it was activated in WX.

If you're going to do a clean install like this, you'll need your newly created upgrade activated product key.

Create a txt document on your desktop named productkey.txt
Copy and paste the following script into the txt document and save. Now rename the file extension to .vbs. Double click and it should open a window populated with your key. Use this key during the clean install.

Code:

Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
MsgBox ConvertToKey(WshShell.RegRead("HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DigitalProductId"))

Function ConvertToKey(Key)
Const KeyOffset = 52
i = 28
Chars = "BCDFGHJKMPQRTVWXY2346789"
Do
Cur = 0
x = 14
Do
Cur = Cur * 256
Cur = Key(x + KeyOffset) + Cur
Key(x + KeyOffset) = (Cur \ 24) And 255
Cur = Cur Mod 24
x = x -1
Loop While x >= 0
i = i -1
KeyOutput = Mid(Chars, Cur + 1, 1) & KeyOutput
If (((29 - i) Mod 6) = 0) And (i <> -1) Then
i = i -1
KeyOutput = "-" & KeyOutput
End If
Loop While i >= 0
ConvertToKey = KeyOutput
End Function

Looks like key not needed if you clean install to same machine as the upgrade. Skipping thru all the product key activation prompts and continuing to configure os options till you reach the desktop results in an auto activation without input of key.

Tested and True. But buggy as hell os.

Um wow, had a display driver malfunction and now i boot into a black screen. Doesnt appear to be handling surround very well.

K, got the os back. Btw, gaming on the upgrade install was amazingly smooth but riddled with random dx crashes.

Sounds like the workaround for the allowing of Windows 10 Scores will be the use of High Precision Event Timers vs RTC in the benchmark. 3Dmark scores will need to be validated online where they check to see which timer was used in the benchmark. XTU automatically uses it. Bot will prolly find a way to incorporate into all remaining legacy benchmarks. HPET is a feature of both intel and amd processors.

Kal-EL 08-09-2015 02:21 AM

Prevent auto driver download method?
Right click This PC > Advanced system settings > Hardware > Driver Installation Settings > Tick "No, let me choose what to do"

Will have to see when next Nvidia update rolls thru.

Kal-EL 08-09-2015 02:24 AM

Experimental...
Change EnableLUA to 0 to disable UAC.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\System
Change SearchOrderConfig to 0 to disable driver downloads.

Found another issue.

Transfer rate between W7 Desktop to NAS was 100 MB/s.

Transfer rate between W10 Destktop to NAS is now 4 MB/s.

No changes were made to network, only difference is the "upgrade" from W7 to W10.

Annoying to say the least.

Looking for a fix.

Gonna try to reboot the whole network before I start feking with settings.

Slow network throughput on windows 10

OC Maximus 08-09-2015 09:28 AM

A router reboot fixed the transfer rate issue.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program :)

GFDuke 08-10-2015 01:46 AM

I have 4 pc's installed with the same Win 7 OS. Do you think upgrading 1 of them will mess up the others? I used the phone activation process to get a valid install code.

Kal-EL 08-10-2015 11:26 AM

Same product keys on each pc?

My guess would be no, i don't think it'd mess it up on the others but lemme try booting back into my other partition which is my original win 7 install with same key. I'll try running windows update on the 7 to see if microsoft gives me the ban hammer. Report back shortly.

Ok, ran windows update on Win 7 partition, updated new windows defender and silverlight successfully.

No errors or banhammers issued. Posting from Win 7 Ultim N 64 with no issues.

GFDuke 08-10-2015 01:23 PM
