3Dmark2001 school by Mr Vivi
Sup all overclockingholics!
In this thread we dicsuss / ask/ and play some 3dmark2001. It's worse than i feared on this forum and I have seen some 2001 runs in vista. So let me put on my cryo suite and set my teaching mode to MAXIMUM BASICS. Let me start of with what I can teach you. !Summary! •!!USE THE D3D OVERRIDER IN RIVATUNER for NVIDIA CARDS!! *a show how below* •DO NOT RUN IN DIAGNOSTICS MODE •MEMORY TIMINGS AND PL TIGHT •High as possibly SAFE PCI-E FREQ (110 - 115 is safe) •Nvidia controll panel, set gpu 3D to "Performance", NOT HIGH PERFORMANCE. •Fresh install of !XP! NO OTHER OS. you will loose about 2000 points at LEAST if not in xp. •USE Socket 775 CPU. i7 is Generally very bad for 2001, your nature score gets a serious cap, you will never reach 1200 or 1400. •Nvidia cards normally RULE this benchmark unless you can somehow get your 4870's in crossfire to 1200 core each. (4890's not as strong due to new drivers) •!!LEVEL OF DETAIL!!! *Described below* ----------------TESTS - System stabilty factors. (What the tests focus on) --- LobbyH - MEMORY CPU GPU : HEAVY CarH - CPU GPU : MILD DragothicH - MEMORY GPU-MEM : MILD LobbyL - MEMORY CPU : HEAVY DragothicL - MEMORY CPU: MILD CarL - CPU : CHILLED Nature - GPU : HEAVY | MEGA CHILLED cpu Now, very important. Running the tests in a specific order. The most common order to run your tests in, is like this below. 1st CarH 2nd LobbyH 3rd DragothicH 4th LobbyL 5th DragothicL 6th CarL 7th Nature Why run it in a specific order?: Because you could get an increase in framerate when a certain test is run closer to the Boot. (closer to when your pc was put on). Like: this can happen. if run in the normal order: car low : 600 fps car high: 400 fps Lobby low: 1000 fps Lobby high: 500 fps this could happen when run in the order above Car high: 420 fps Lobby high: 510 fps lobby low : 1000 fps car low: 600 fps The LOW'S KEEP THEIR FPS. but the HIGH'S suffer when not run EARLY. so you GAIN score. How do i run it in order?: Select "CHANGE" like shown. http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/4646/32147792.jpg Then in the second window click "CLEAR" like shown. THEN select ONE test. For instance CAR HIGH. then click OK and then RUN THE BENCHMARK. http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/466/58075541.jpg only one test will be ran. THEN REPEAT the process, click CHANGE, deselect car HIGH and select the SECOND test you have to run in the order, which is LOBBY HIGH, then click OK with only the ONE test (lobby high) selected and RUN THE BENCHMARK. you repeat this process untill you get a SCORE AFTER CAR LOW the 6TH TEST IN THE SEQUENCE. THEN run nature and you will get your FINAL SCORE. What is the whole CAR LOW bussiness? Car low is a buggy test. After you get to car low (the 6th test you have to run in the order) you will run it and get for instance 800 fps. and a total score of 64 000. Now, click BENCHMARK AGAIN, without changing anything, so what your doing is just RUNNING CAR LOW again. this time your score might be 63 800, THEN RUN IT AGIAN, and maybe get 63 890, it will jump around allot, but keep RUNNING IT (EVEN UP TO 10 OR 15 TIMES, until you get a strange JUMP in score or Frames.) like instead of 64 000 , you now score 64 200, or 64400 even. (a 20 or more fps boost, from like 700 to 722 OR EVEN MORE). THEN you run nature and get your final good score! Now that you have RUN ORDER nailed down, we get on to running each test with a specific LOD. short for, LEVEL OF DETAIL. This is how you change your level of detail. Open Rivatuner. Then follow the image: http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/715/3lod.jpg Now on your screen you will have this tab. ONLY YOURS WILL SHOW a MAXIMUM OF LOD 3, AND NOT 15 LIKE MINE. http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/8732/4lod.jpg You will need up to 5 so how you can change your max of 3, you do this. Go to tab "power user" , ignore the warning, go to nvidia global and change the lod MAX to 15. click apply. http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/7369/5lod.jpg Now go back to your LOD setting's screen. (The pic with the LOD slider that is now 15 at max) You still run in the order i told you. BUT before you run it, you change the LOD in rivatuner. So what you do is. 1. Open riva - change lod, clock your card. 2. Run test 1 (CAr high) on the specfic LOD it likes (lod's for tests explained below) 3. After test 1 is run, open riva and change the lod to what the 2nd test (lobby high) likes. Then continue this till you reach the end of your 3dmark 2001 run. (you dont have to change the lod for car low each time you run it, LOD sticks like your graphics clocks) The most important test which uses LOD is NATURE. make sure you know the correct LOD for your card and NATURE. MOSTLY, for NVIDIA based graphics cards, the best LOD for nature is 4.9 , 5 , or 5.1. Why change the lod, it just blurrs the image?: If you run LOD on an old card like 8800gts 512. A run without lod would look like this: Nature FPS: 586. (normal) Nature FPS: 698. ( WITH LOD ) HUGE JUMPS, that means a 2240 jump in your main score....... What LOD's for which tests?: Well, you run what works best for your CARD. but here are basic lods which i have tested. For newer cards. (260's, 280's, 285's ,295's etc.) ORDER + LOD: 1st Lobby HIGH (4.9) 2nd Car HIGH (5) 3rd Dragothic HIGH (5.1) 4th Lobby LOW (4.9) 5th Dragothic LOW (5) 6th Car LOW (5) (many times, till you get a strange bump in FPS/score, like 300 points) 7th NATURE (4.9) and for older cards: ORDER + LOD: 1st Car HIGH (4.4) 2nd Lobby HIGH (5.1) 3rd Dragothic HIGH (5) 4th Lobby LOW (3.4) 5th Dragothic LOW (2.9) 6th Car LOW (3.1) (many times, till you get a strange bump in FPS/score, like 200- 400 points) 7th NATURE (5.1) Now on to. THE D3D OVERRIDER, sounds like an EPIC MOVIE right!!. also one of the BIGGEST FREAKING THINGs that makes your FPS IN NATURE EXPLODE, epic indeed. MOSTLY effective on Older cards below driver range 180.xx. (less effective but STILL works on the 280's and above). You change it by going NOT INTO RIVE, its an EXTRA APP AT YOUR RIVA FOLDER http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/7145/6d3d.jpg then http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/6157/7d3d.jpg then Disable vsync, make sure GLOBAL is selected and HIGH priority for the APPS. http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/8237/8d3d.jpg Then you run 3dmark! you do this BEFORE you run anything. before you even open 2001 if you want. So remember: BOOT - MAKE MEMORY TIGHT. ENABLE D3D. CLOCK CARD SET LOD FOR 1ST TEST. OPEN 2001. RUN 1ST TEST OPEN RIVA CHANGE LOD RUN 2ND TEST AND REPEAT! Have fun guys! nvidia rules ;p ask questions and i will update the list. |
Vivi u are D MAN! thx a bunch for posting so freely.
:club: |
+1 now I am really gonna have to work to take home the prize once everyone reads this. I wish I woud have saw it earlier.
|
I knew there was a lil more to this tweak!
|
Oh yes nice write up & tweaks vivi. Good of you to share
Also people there are lots of registry entries that can effect your final score. And DIG DIG DIG in rivatuner settings. Lots of gems in there ;) I'll add a tweak of my own... kill explorer for 50-100 points (its a well known one yes, but I play my cards close to the chest). ;) |

wow still no love for the ati boys i see :argh::rofl
|
Thanks Mr V
I read about running them in order before but did not know you could do that on the free version so I never tried (just checked... you can!!). thanks |
damn pci-e doesnt wanna go over 106
|
THANK YOU!!!!!
I feel like I just found the Holy Grail! |
Thankyou Vivi for an excellent tutorial on tweaking 01. Definately some great stuff in there that I didn't know.....I will be sure to pass it along to my brothers over at NBOC. Most kind of you to share this info on a difficult bench. :alien:
|
No problem guys!
Also a note, for ati cards you have to use LOD aswel, look in your GUIDES section there is a guide for ATI and LOD. U can stull use all the tweaks for your windows XP for the ati's. and, about the 106 pci, i forgot to say P45 chipset boards are useless with pci-e, most cant go over 105. The x48's and stuff like that can go to 115. Cool! |
Many thanks for the guide, few people share so openly.
I'd seen D3D Overrider mentioned many times but never saw it explained |
Hey Vivi, can you tell me what kind of help or hinderance HT is on this bench? I know what my results have been, but I am curious about your results.
|
HT hmm, i have no idea. :o
do you mean HT on i7's? |
Yes sir, sorry HyperThreading with our i7's.
|
i have no idea, but it DOES help. I just dont know how much in 2001. People dont do 2001 with i7's because of how badly it fails.
|
Well, after extensive 01 benchin , I can tell you that I consistantly lose points with HT on....usually over 2k in the red.
|
i see, thanks for sharing.
maybe on day something will happen and i7's can do 2001 again :? |
Fine Kal... a better tip :D. heres the secret for i7's benching 2001 (775 is still superior though). Since you guys can use any cooling bust out those LN2 pots! Get it cold and raise uncore as high as possible. It has a good effect :)
|
Quote:
hahahaha i was waiting to see when someone was gonna start playing with some settings  but tbh even though the uncore will help you come up some, its still is not gonna match an e8600 with a low multi and high FSB ;) |
Uncore is the secret to all that is good with the i7. I know with my 975 A batch anything over +275 CPU VTT or 4040 Uncore it is a no boot. Instant blue screen entering windows. Around -40 +300 CPU VTT to + 375 and 4200 to 4500 Uncore will boot into windows. For +400 to +450 4500 to 4700 uncore I need the pot to -80. Now if I only knew about the CL bug I could have increased my score even more.
@ soups - someday I will break the camera out and get pics of the nice LN2 fog rolling across the basement floor. |

For the LCC it has a chance. Note what won over on XS. I7 will win if you have the right uncore and mem speeds + the subzero clocks needed to get back to 1200 Nature ;)
|
I've seen all except this one.
Run in System cache mode, going to test and report back ;) I do have a tip for you that goes waay back to Oppainters/macci days, run on an IDE drive. That way you can push PCIe over 130 on most setups, the gains are not that huge (compared to older gen cards) but it still helps. |
Overclockaholics................................ Helping other overclockaholics bench better one thread at a time! :D

Just a note on this topic, when running a raid card, you gotta watch the pci-e/pci slots getting overclocked or the raid card won't boot.
|
RUN IN SYSTEM CACHE MODE?
havent tried that before lol how much does it really help? |

|
with the PCie mod on Gigabyte UD5 you can bench SATA drives on Nehalem up to 128MHz PCIe or so :) but it doesnt do diddly squat for scores
|
Quote:
about 200 P on final score, if i just ran them stock vs stock |
I would submit that high uncore does diddly squat for scores as well....its qpi that counts.

bigger fsb on 775's are best option for sure
|
Vivi thanks for the comment in the 01 contest ;). I'm like alot of us here. We aren't the smartest, most knowledgable, or have all the cooling equipment, but I'll be damned if we don't yearn for the knowledge and have the balls to keep pushing it. Thats why your guide is greatly appreciated. Not many people post that kind of shit. I'm sure everybody here has soaked something up from this.

Well I've jacked the uncore. It helped but not what I expected. I'm talking about bclock. I'm about done testing with i7 for this bench cause I got an RE sitting in a box waiting for some volts to pump through it.
|
np chuch, thanks for YOUR comments.
whoo push that RE, your Avatar isnt there for nothing |
Hey, great thread!
A couple there I wasnt aware of, Looking forward to testing it, :D Btw, goddy, biostar wasnt there! Am going to try to pick it up later this week, so hopefully this weekend ill have a go at 01 with these settings, and a few more, ;) |
