GPU SS unit testing

4 Attachment(s)
Hey guys,
I got a used modded SS unit from XS in this morning and am going to test it out soon. I have no idea how it will handle my 5870 or other single GPU cards, so I'll just have to test it and see!
So far its a quiet little unit, nothing compared to my 2 stager cascade, and shows about -50c on the temp probe.
Here are a few pictures.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to stick it on the 5870 tonight, we'll see though... right now I'm finishing a case mod to get a 5970 to fit. :)

sick .... who built it for you ???

I heard a few years ago kingpin owned it... It has been upgraded and unused for a while... Got it from cowpuppy. :)

Interesting to see how this performs.

I have a Chilly1 here that I havent used in ages and ave thought about doing this. Only problem is has the standard evap enclosure and I havent spent to the time to mod it to fit a GPU.

I expect it should work fine tho.

I have a round of new tests coming up soon that I will use it with, not related to GPU's tho., then I don't know what I will end up doing with it.

looks swank :)

The 5870 should be a good test card, some of them get pretty damned hot under load. Unit looks good, may the clocks be with you. in for the results :)

Looks good, man it would be nice to have gpu on SS and not have to constantly scoop dice into the hot bastards lol

Didn't get to make the mount for it tonight but it'll be done tomorrow!
Looks like the 5870's gpu core size is much smaller than the GTX 280 I have here... It'll definitely fit the evap's head better than the 280...
Would it be bad to use it on a bigger core with such a small tip? I wouldn't think it would take the heat off of the whole chip as well...

I got it for pretty much the same reason as my cascade unit... Ease of use when benching for long periods of time and the lack of the constant supply replenishment that you have with ln2 and dice. ;)
I can take my time and tweak my clocks and odes for hours without really wasting anything...
Also this seems to be the better option for me because I'm still 15 and don't have a drivers liscense to run out and get ln2 or dice every few days... :rofl

Shooting for 1100+ core on the 5870 if this performs ok. The card does 1066/1330 through all of the 3d marks on the stock cooler at 1.35vcore...
I'll be sure to get the temps of the card in while idle@stock and then monitor the max while@load overclocked and bolted in one of the 3dmarks(probably a vantage gpu run).

I hope this testing will make it clear whether it's worth it (how much difference it makes)to add a rad and a gpu waterblock to your loop or to get an low end ~$300 SS unit that holds decent temps.
Thanks for all the interest! :)

I think you will hit 1150 if it can hold the load.

Can always pop the lid off the 280, the chip is big but way smaller than the ihs

be careful if you decide to pop the top on the gtx200 series cards as you can chip the core quite easily
