Change XP from IDE to AHCI mode post install
 

Just throwing together an XP loaner for an old friend, and of course, no slipstreaming AHCI drivers for me!

So this time since im using a Z68 motherboard I did some googling since my normal post install change over was not showing up correctly.

There is a TON of bad information out there on how to do this, involving focusing on classID registry settings, making sure you find the right vendor ID blah blah blah.

So crazy hard.

Instead.


Right clock my computer
Select manage
Open Device manager
Open IDE/ATA ATAPI Controllers
Right click the storage device you want to switch to AHCI mode
Select update driver, do not search and have disk.
Browse to your extracted drivers click the one you want (AHCI) and ok

For Z68 (and probably P67 now to) the new Intel drivers changed the name to
"Intel Desktop/Workstation/Server Express Chipset SATA AHCI controller"


Restart changing BIOS to AHCI mode and reboot. new device will be found. XP will install driver automatically and require another restart (ahhh remember the good ole XP days, restarting every time you installed something *sigh)


Dunno why people are mucking about in registry and needing to reinstall windows and stuff :thumbsup:

If that way works better for you, that is fine, I found it much simpler to just right click and update driver. But I am lazy :thumbsup:
