Why oh why did I not see this 9 months ago.......
It helps to come up with your own convention for trimming a leg off a VR. I always trim it such that turning clockwise increases resistance. Doesn't matter what direction you choose, if you always do it the same you won't have to think about it when the hardware's fired up in the thick of things.
